What is communication?

• Communication is the process for exchanging ideas and creating meaning

• Metacommunication is communication about communication

– Relationship talk, giving advice on speaking, etc.

The Communication Model

Parts of the Model

• The message is the idea that you want to communicate

• The receiver is the person whom the message is intended

• The sender is the one who communicates the message

• Context is the time and place the communication exchange happens

• Encoding is the process of turning ideas into messages

• Decoding is the process of translating communication into meaning

• The receiver’s response to the message is known as feedback

Parts of the Model

• The channel is the means used to transmit a message from sender to receiver

• Interference (noise) is anything that blocks or distorts communication

• Self

– What am I trying to say?

– How can I say it effectively?

• Listener

– How is the listener responding to what I’m saying?

– How can I adjust what I’m saying to get a better response from my audience?

– How would I describe the occasion?

– What is my role and the role of the listener?

• Task

– Do I care somewhat or a great deal about this task?

– How can the task be accomplished?

• Intrapersonal communication is communication with ourselves

• Interpersonal communication occurs in contexts where two or more people actively participate in exchanging messages

• Public speaking is known as person-to-group communication

– Lectures, project reports, and speeches

• Mass media is a level of communication that uses technology to bring the same message to a large group of people

– Radio, TV, internet, newspaper, magazines, etc.
