CULTURE!

Culture is what makes one

society different from

another society.

CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE

Culture is shared (member vs.

outsider)

People of the same culture can

predict (within limits) how others

will think and behave.

Sometimes we have

misunderstandings when we step

outside our familiar cultural setting,

where meanings are not shared

with other people (brand acronym,

abaya—burqa in France, free

speech—Muhammad video, burning

CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE

Culture is learned (not biologically transmitted) through teaching or interacting with one’s cultural environment

This learning of culture is called “enculturation”

CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE

--acculturation is adopting aspects

of another society’s culture while

keeping your own (bi-cultural)

--assimilation is absorbing another

society’s culture and losing your

own

CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE

Culture changes

Culture is humanity’s most

powerful strategy for survival—

it’s how basic natural demands

of human life are met in

different ways because of

culturally defined variations

(disposing of dead, not eating

cows, prizing freedom above

everything else)

CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE

There are 3 types of culture:

• Popular Culture (spreads easily. Is popular!) (houses, clothes, food, music)

• Folk Culture (generally doesn’t spread much, is often tied to land, religion, seasons, agriculture)

• Counter Culture (a sub-culture or fringe culture that develops in opposition to mainstream culture. It peaks and declines but often leaves an impact on society)

2.

Popular or “Pop” Culture – customs practiced by large, diverse groups. Ex. – Levi Jeans
