WHAT IS CULTURE NIGHT Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts. This year, it will take place on Friday 20th September. From 5pm onwards, cultural venues across county Monaghan will stay open for everyone to come enjoy the unique experience of Culture Night, a free night of fun, entertainment and discovery. Monaghan has a vibrant rich cultural community, and this is a great opportunity to sample the area’s cultural and creative offerings for free throughout the evening. We are delighted to have so many organisations involved this year again and we hope you enjoy exploring the rich cultural landscape of County Monaghan.

From Clones to Chernobyl - 33 years laterA photographic presentation by Brian McNamee, award winning Clones photographer. The event will showcase images of how the areas around the nuclear plant and town of Pripyat look today. Special guest Larry Butler will speak about how the community of Clones came together to assist in the aftermath of the disaster. Clones Art Studios Celebrates Culture Night Come along to the newly refurbished Clones Art Studios where the public will have an opportunity to view the studios and meet a variety of artists who will be showcasing their work, along with creative art workshops for all ages to join in. Exploring Irish & Celtic Cultures Through Music We will be joined in Clones Library by Séamas ÓLabhradha, Arts Ekta, for an evening exploring Irish and Celtic Cultures through music. This event will allow us to explore how music and culture are interconnected and how sharing a love of music helps us explore other cultures. CASTLEBLAYNEY

Join us in Castleblayney for a unique and very special night of Arts and Street Theatre! This evening the streets of Castleblayney will come to life as the community celebrates the life and legacy of one of the town’s most significant sons, pioneering photographer, doctor and traveller John J Clarke. A number of sites around the town will be reimagined by artists, actors and everyone of all ages who cares to join in. No pressure, but feel free to dress up in Edwardian era clothes (optional). Above all feel free to have a good time. This event is part of 2019 Theatre Artist In Residence programme for County Monaghan and is supported by Creative Ireland, The Arts Council, Íontas Arts Centre and Monaghan County Council.

We will round off the evening in Castleblayney with a very special Culture Night Miscellany in the Scouts Hall from 8pm just opposite JJ Clarkes house! Expect a night of storytelling, music, recitals and craic at this family friendly and free gathering. This event is produced by Íontas Arts. Refreshments will also be served in the Scouts Hall. MONAGHANThe Music of the Rossmores @ Monaghan Museum Join renowned Uilleann Piper, Tiarnan O Duinnchinn, as he plays the newly conserved set of Uilleann Pipes that once belonged to the 3rd Lord Rossmore, Henry Robert Westenra in the mid eighteenth century. These pipes have been donated to the museum by the current Lord Rossmore and have been painstakingly conserved and brought back to life by local pipe maker and player Eamonn Curran. Music Club @ The Market HouseMonaghan County Council’s Coiste na Gaeilge are pleased to put on a musical performance by four of Monaghan’s best

Irish traditional musicians for Culture Night 2019. David Lambe, Sean McElwain, Dónal McCague and Niamh Magennis are sure the entertain in the unique setting of the Market House Monaghan. As well as music the Irish language will be celebrated as an integral part of our culture and identity. Ballybay Celebrates Culture Night A full programme of events has been planned to take place in various locations in Ballybay to celebrate Culture Night.

Dancing at the…Library! Carrickmacross Library are teaming up with the Malone Dance Academy to offer an evening of Dance. These Taster sessions will explore Ballet & Musical Theatre Dance Techniques for beginners. Places will be limited so pre-booking is necessary. Traditional Irish music sessionAn Irish music session with invited guest traditional artists Patrick McGrane and Aoife McCabe. Patrick is a virtuoso button accordion player who has toured the World with a number of dance troupes including Rhythm of the Dance while Aoife is a champion sean nós dancer and melodeon player. Together they will perform and lead the open session for visiting and local traditional musicians and dancers. There will be a ‘slow session’ from 21:00 for improvers with the main session commencing at 22:15. Free admission and refreshments served.

Celebrating the Rich Heritage and Culture of Kavanagh Country Patrick Kavanagh’s work illustrates a renaissance in Irish spiritual customs and values which would have been lost without him. His poetry and prose vividly tell the parochial tale which is acknowledged to be universal. Drama presentations by Fanebank Theatre, Poetry and Storytelling. Folk Tales of Monaghan and Around the World Ballybay Library & Tullycorbet CCE invite you all to an enchanting evening of storytelling and music. We are delighted to have renowned storyteller Steve Lally join us, who will take everyone under his storytelling spell and whisk you around the world with myths, legends and songs. Steve is the author of Folk Tales of Monaghan. An evening guaranteed of laughter, thrills, chills and excitement. Evening will finish with traditional music session and light refreshments. Ulster Scots Marching Bands Concert.Four local bands of different genre (accordion, flute, bagpapipes) will perform to celebrate Culture Night in Drum, playing a range of Ulster Scots airs, hymn tunes and giving a brief history of each band. An Ulster Scot Country troupe will perform on the night allowing for attendees to participate. Everyone welcome.
