What is Philanthropy New York?

285 New York-based grantmakers making almost $7 billion in grants a year.

Philanthropy New York is a community of grantmakers. The region’s leading funders join Philanthropy New York to take advantage of its programmatic and network offerings, to forge collaborations with other funders, and to strengthen their leadership in the philanthropic sector. We provide resources for everyone associated with a foundation—trustees, executives, program and administrative staff, and family members.

Philanthropy New York is a regional forum with global impact. Our members are based primarily, but not exclusively, in the New York region. They make grants in virtually every area, and champion local, national, and global causes. Their philanthropic missions tackle issues of concern for people and communities in New York City, in New York State, across the United States, and around the world.

Philanthropy New York brings leaders together. Foundation executives and CEOs gather at Philanthropy New York to share their ideas and insights about best practices for the philanthropic sector and for our region. Philanthropy New York is also committed to increasing the scope and impact of organized philanthropy by connecting lawmakers directly to the issues that affect their constituents and their communities.

Philanthropy New York generates and consolidates knowledge. Our peer networks bring together foundations funding in areas such as youth care and development, the environment, education, and disabled rights. These funders come together to combine their resources for maximum exposure—and maximum impact. New York is both the modern birthplace of professional philanthropy and home to more funders than any other place on earth—almost 7,000 grantmaking organizations. As new funders, innovations, and ways of giving affect the grantmaking landscape, Philanthropy New York serves as a catalyst and connector of people, institutions, ideas, resources, advocacy, and action for change. We ensure that the strategic voice of modern philanthropy is clearly heard.

Philanthropy New York membership is open to private, corporate, family, operating, and public foundations,

individual philanthropists, and philanthropic advisors.

Why Join Philanthropy New York? Philanthropy New York is a catalyst and connector of people, institutions, ideas, resources, advocacy, and action for change. We ensure that the strategic voice of modern philanthropy is clearly heard.

As a Philanthropy New York member, you will:

Connect with the largest community of funders in the New York region. You’ll join a diverse group of professionals committed to having an impact on emerging and persistent social issues at local, regional, and global levels. You’ll build personal relationships with members who are driven to improve their personal and organizational performance and stay on top of new methods and best practices.

Capitalize on the substantial array of resources and support included in your membership. From our content-rich website to ongoing, personal assistance from our staff, an extraordinary breadth of support is at your fingertips—all provided in ways that respect your time and needs. If you’re like many of our members, you’ll use these resources to launch anything from funding initiatives to new careers!

Cultivate a spirit of learning and performance improvement throughout your organization. That’s because your membership fee includes unlimited access for your entire staff. Our educational programs are inspired and designed by members and held locally (no travel expenses!) so no one is left out. When attending programs, you’ll find that discussion and debate is encouraged because in today’s economic environment, the questions are often as important as the answers.

Collaborate with your peers. As you share ideas in our various forums, you’re likely to inspire other funders to partner with you. Together you’ll identify needs, coordinate funding to common causes, and share performance metrics. While collaboration is not a requirement, you’ll quickly see the value and efficiency in partnering with other professionals in these resource-constrained times.

Champion important causes in ways that only the New York region can. While we never take a position on any issue, we do convene groups around events that clearly demand a concerted response. As a member, you could find yourself coming together with a host of other New York funders to answer an immediate need. Ask our members about their response to Hurricane Katrina and you’ll hear that it was efficient, impactful, and rewarding for all.

Philanthropy New York membership is open to private, corporate, family, operating, and public foundations,

individual philanthropists, and philanthropic advisors.

Regular membership in Philanthropy New York is open to any organization that or individual who meets our eligibility criteria. If the membership eligibility statement was not included with your application materials, please contact us at 212.714.0699 or visit www.philanthropynewyork.org.

Associate membership is open to any organization that meets the eligibility criteria for regular membership and also conforms to the following statement: “If your organization maintains at least seventy-five percent of its total employees AND at least ninety percent of its executive team in offices located more than 50 miles from New York City, it qualifies for associate membership at a flat annual rate, currently $1,200. “Those staff members and trustees based in the New York region may attend Philanthropy New York programs and receive services at member rates and may serve on Board committees, but cannot serve on the Philanthropy New York Board of Directors. Associate members also cannot vote at Philanthropy New York’s Annual Meeting.”

Professional Philanthropic Advisors will pay according to the prevailing dues schedule by following one of two methods:

a. An individual advisor, whether operating on his/her own or a member of a larger firm, may elect to join Philanthropy New York as the representative of one or more of his/her client foundations. The client foundation will join as a regular member and pay standard Philanthropy New York dues based on its grantmaking budget. The advisor will be listed as the Philanthropy New York liaison and enjoy full member status. No other staff, if any, at the advisory firm will have access to Philanthropy New York programs or resources under this membership option.

b. An advisory firm may become a full member of Philanthropy New York and give its entire staff access to programs and resources. The firm determines its membership dues by multiplying Philanthropy New York’s prevailing Associate Membership fee [currently $1,200] by the firm’s number of FTE professional positions. A “professional” is defined as a staff member at or above the title of “Program Officer,” “Philanthropic Advisor,” or equivalent as well as administrative officers of equivalent rank. Trustees and staff of the advisory firm’s client foundations will not enjoy Philanthropy New York membership benefits unless those foundations join the association. Although we assess dues only on certain employees, the membership covers everyone at the firm.

In The Public Trust

A STATEMENT ON SHARED VALUES

AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES

ADOPTED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF

PHILANTHROPY NEW YORK

JUNE 2005

Philanthropy plays a special role in advancing the common good. Democratic traditions,

personal values, and religious faiths have stimulated a wide array of giving institutions across the United States and abroad. Charitable resources have been used to relieve human suffering, expand knowledge, promote artistic expression, and pilot innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing social, economic, and environmental problems.

The New York Metropolis, the birthplace of modern American philanthropy, is home to more foundations and corporate grantmakers than anywhere else. For over twenty-five years, Philanthropy New York has been a leader in offering programs and resources that support grantmaking and communicating the value of philanthropy in our society. Philanthropy New York members represent a wide array of institutional donors, the breadth of which enriches the sector and spurs creative approaches to charitable work.

PHILANTHROPY NEW YORK’S ROLE

For more than a quarter of a century, Philanthropy New York has provided leadership and

assisted grantmakers in gaining competency to formulate and advance their charitable missions in ways that have the most impact and illustrate the highest professional and ethical practices. We continue to do so through our educational offerings and resources and by widely sharing exemplary practices and approaches.
