What is Social Thinking®? Camp Progress at Spectrum Autism Services is a Social Thinking® therapy camp where students of all ages learn critical thinking skills to better understand the world in which they live. Our approach to teaching Social Thinking® is based on the belief that persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and social cognitive differences have their own unique way of viewing the world and often this perspective is quite different from how neurotypical people view the world. Our method of teaching Social Thinking® does not devalue this unique way of thinking, but rather teaches understanding and appreciation of diverse viewpoints. In our classes, students learn the basic social communication thinking skills that will enable them to better interact with others. To exhibit good social behavior skills, a person must be able to share space with others, think about others from the other person's perspective in this shared space, and learn to regulate one's behavior in the shared space. Students will be offered many opportunities to practice these skills with peers and staff during Camp Progress and among family members. Parents will also learn to use the skills taught during the camp in order to reinforce the use of these skills at home and in the community. During the last 30 minutes of the camp day, students and staff share the day's Social Thinking concepts with the parent(s). This activity helps parents gain the knowledge needed to encourage generalization of these skills to other environments. When the student learns through testing how effective the skills are in safe and familiar environments and the parent is taught the concepts, the learning will transfer to encounters in the community.

How will Social Thinking® skills improve social behavior skills? To exhibit good social behavior skills, a person must be able to share space with others, think about others from the other person’s perspective in this shared space, and learn to regulate one’s behavior in the shared space. The Social Thinking® model is a developmental, behavioral approach to teaching social behavior and thinking concepts. Children and adults learn the “language” of social cognition to “think” about social skill requirements in a variety of settings and environments. Who can benefit from Social Thinking® therapy? Social Thinking® therapy will benefit a variety of people who need additional instruction in order to demonstrate appropriate social interaction and social behavior regulation. Individuals who may benefit from Social Thinking® include, but are not limited to, persons diagnosed with the following: • Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) • Non-Verbal Learning Disability (NLD) • High-Functioning Autism (HFA) • Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD/ADD) Social Thinking® has been shown to help people who: • Have difficulty working in groups • Do not observe or take into account other’s social cues • Have limited ability to infer meaning, problem-solve , predict outcomes • Are very literal in interpreting language • Have difficulty understanding the perspective of others • Have difficulty talking about other people’s topic of interest • Attend to details while often missing the underlying concept • Have differences in understanding and expressing humor

What are the different levels of Social Communicators All children and adults will be assigned to classes based on their age and social cognitive functioning level. Depending on enrollment, the following classes will be offered each session: • The Basics of Social Thinking® – This class is for people who have never

had Social Thinking® • Social Thinking® – Intermediate Levels – This class is for people who

have only completed Level 1 Social Thinking® classes • Continuing Concepts in Social Thinking® – This class is for previous
