WHAT IS VIRTUAL REALITY REALLY?
WITH BOB FROM THE CREATION STATION
TERMINOLOGY
• Reality• Mediated Reality • Mixed Reality• 360 video• Virtual Reality• Immersive Reality• Augmented Reality
MEDIATED REALITY / MIXED REALITY
• Lots of sort of but not quite yet maybe some of this or that
• Interactivity between computer and person in a limited environment• Fancy Bus Benches – Mixed Reality
360 VIDEO
• This type of video is captured using multiple cameras to create a fully spherical film. • This means you can turn your head within a VR experience
and see all around you• And with new platforms like YouTube 360, this type of content
isn’t just used in VR. 360 degree video viewers can use their mouse to scroll around the video for a different perspective.
VIRTUAL REALITY
• A three-dimensional, computer generated environment which can be explored and interacted with by a person. • That person becomes part of this virtual world or is immersed
within this environment • Able to manipulate objects or perform a series of actions.• 360 Sound is expected but is currently not always inclusive
IMMERSIVE REALITY
• Virtual Reality that you can fully interact with• 360 Sound is required• Other senses starting to become required – Haptic Feedback
• Interactivity is in the control of the user and not the designer • By restricting the world to a small space this is possible• Expand slowly but surely
AUGMENTED REALITY
• Hardest to accomplish• Fully locational overlay on Reality• Word lens – Google Translate• IKEA
• Promise of Google Glass next generation• Hololens, Meta & Magic Leap
TERMINOLOGY FOR GEAR
• Display• Monitor• Hand Held (phone) – power drain, over heating, quality of the screen
• Most Visors currently• Optical projection
• Lack of controls• Leap Motion as alternative controller
HUD
• Heads Up Display• Air Force• Automobiles
• Example of Mediated Reality• Overlay information without relating to location
HEAD MOUNTED• Visors• Google Cardboard – bring your own screen
• 25 million in the wild in theory • Oculus Rift• Galaxy Gear• HTC Vive• Microsoft Hololens & Meta (Partial Visors)
• Eyeglasses• Google Glass• Magic Leap?
• Contact Lenses
WHO IS DOING WHAT?• USAF/Military• HUD &
• Google Glass• Google Cardboard• Merge• View Master• Gear• Valve
• Oculus• HTC Vive• Microsoft HoloLens• Meta• Magic Leap
