MissionMission

To encourage cooperation and coordination in planning for and responding to disasters so that:

community-wide response will more effective,

duplication of services will be minimized,

more efficient service will be provided to those affected by a disaster.

Guiding Principles Guiding Principles (the “4 Cs”)(the “4 Cs”)

• Cooperation—to create a climate for cooperation at all levels and to provide information

• Coordination—to coordinate policy among member organizations and to serve as a liaison, advocate, and community voice

• Communication—to disseminate information through newsletters, a directory, drills, and critiques

• Collaboration—to work together to achieve specific goals and to undertake specific projects during disasters

History of VOADHistory of VOAD

National VOAD established in 1979

Southern California VOAD established soon thereafter

SBVOAD

• 1990-1995: SBVOAD “1.0” established

• 2007: first county-wide steps towards reinstating SBVOAD “2.0”

• 2008: 2-year grant through Orfalea Family Foundation to jumpstart SBVOAD

• 2010: Grant extended through 2012

Partner Members. Nonprofits with a mission to help in disaster preparedness, response, or recovery

Affiliate Members. For-profit businesses willing to help pro-bono in disaster recovery

Associate Members. Government agencies that partner with VOAD to help make our community response more robust

Food Preparation/Distribution. To plan, coordinate, and support the production and distribution of meals during a disaster

“In-Kind” Donations. To receive spontaneous in-kind donations that arrive during a disaster, and in turn distribute items those affected

Long-Term Recovery (Unmet Needs). To assist in the long term needs of those affected by disaster

Emergency Emergency Volunteer CenterVolunteer Center

Physical center for untrained community members who wish to volunteer during disasters

SBVOAD members and government agencies place requests to EVC for volunteers to help support their missions

Volunteers are matched with appropriate opportunities

How Can You Prepare?

Be “Red Cross Ready” Get/Build a Kit Make a Plan Be Informed

Many employees will not follow a workplace emergency plan (like sheltering in place) if they don’t have a family plan in place.
