Choosing a house – EMFs in the street

... Some electromagnetic field generators and a few other items you might want to think

about when choosing your next home.

Can EMFs hurt you? This question is still being researched. However, until there’s conclusive proof that they won’t harm you or your family, I recommend the precautionary approach.

So... What am I looking for?Electromagnetic fields (EMF) or electromagnetic radiation (EMR) are generated by electricity (or power) moving and changing, like in a transformer.

Precautionary ApproachWithout measuring the intensity of the field, it’s impossible to know whether it will affect your health.

As a precaution, try to avoid homes near these types of generating devices.

Precautionary Approach

You can see there’s a fence around this substation, and power companies are unlikely to place these in close proximity to residences, but be aware.

Precautionary ApproachYou may think it unlikely to have a large substation in a residential area, but I have seen one near an aged care facility. (Not handshake distance, butstill, I’d behesitant to putmy mum inthat facility)

Precautionary ApproachHigh voltage transmission lines are increasingly being seen in areas close to residences. There are guidelines for how close homes can be built, but again, I’d be reluctant to be too close.

Precautionary ApproachYou are far more likely to see transmission lines like this in suburban areas. The voltage load they carry is lower, but they still generate quite a high EMF. In in doubt, get your new house checked before signing.

Precautionary ApproachMobile (cell) phone towers are an increasingly more common feature in our landscape. They generate radio frequency, and yes the debate is still out, but until they’re proven safe, be cautious.

Power in your homeYou are likely to have an electricity meter on your home. They, and solar (or wind) inverters also generate an EMF.

Try to keep beds at least 3 metres away from these (even if there’s a wall between)Solar power inverter and electricity meter
