This half term our class enquiry is ‘Can anybody be an inventor?’

Last week we explored what an invention is and the qualities needed to be an inventor.

Inventors are hard working, resilient and determined.

This week we are going to be looking at how people’s lives have changed over the past 50 years.

Today we will conduct an interview with one of your parents. Find out about their day-to-day life as a child when they were your age.

What was different? What was the same? Which inventions have been life changing? Are there any inventions that haven’t been so good?

Draw a picture of your parent as a child, what is their house like? What are they wearing? What are their favourite toys? How is there hair styled?

Blue group:

Learning challenge: I can write plurals with an ‘s’ ending where no change to the root word is needed.

Play quick write grapheme: Ask children to write down all the spellings they can think of for the ‘ai’ grapheme (ai, ay, a_e, ey, a). Which is the most common spelling? Where would you usually find each spelling in words? Which spellings are very rare?

Next, ask children to write the words trays, beads, planes, whales, bees, seats, knees, trees, fields. After children have written each word, show them the correct spelling and mark their words. One tick for the correct number of sound buttons plus one tick for each correct letter. If children have chosen the wrong grapheme, encourage them to correct it.

Finally the adult reads out sentences to the children for them to write.Do snails or snakes make the best pets? The bees in the trees give painful stings. Can whales book seats on planes?Reveal correctly written sentences and encourage children to check their own spellings.

Example: Granddad took Jeffery high up into the clear, blue, bright sky. He blew through a old metal wand with a big huge breathe. Suddenly a huge, fluffy cloud appeared in the brilliant bright blue sky. “Why don’t you have a go?” Granddad suggested to Jeffery quietly. “I can’t wait to have a go!” Jeffery exclaimed excitedly. Jeffery took a big gasping breath and blew through the rusty metal wand. A small wispy cloud floated out. Jeffery looked the floor sadly.
