Chapter Reports

We hosted our first clinical supper of the year on Tuesday 27th February in the McDonald Lecture Theatre at PMH. The speaker; Dr Elizabeth Green, who is the author of “Parenting is Forever” spoke about the value and importance of childhood and what we need to be mindful of as parents, nurses, doctors, teachers and carers.

Again, we had excellent support for the event; there were 79 attendees and four via video conference.

The audience scored the talk high on all of our satisfaction parameters. Comments included:

Wonderful and informative presentation, thank you very much I feel very inspired

…. Elizabeth was an informative, educated and easy to listen to presenter

Really enjoyed this presentation, "I'm not a parent, however, I have several nieces and nephews who I am in regularcontact with. This information was invaluable, thank you

Thank you ‐ your presentation has given me both added knowledge for tips to use at home and at work with manyyoung people who need some understanding adults around them

Thank you [sic]! I am a speechie and got so much form [sic] your talk, nice to hear your thoughts

Thank you for thoughtfully alternating between "parents, proxy parents, carers, nurses, teachers etc." This overtlymade the presentation adaptable for everyone

I thought the presentation was very insightful and engaging, it definitely gave me an insight into some issues thatyoung people face and more on what we can do as parents/teachers/carers to support them.

Very interesting, catered to broad audience, something for everyone.

Good content and relevant to my work. However, a little rushed towards the end. Would have liked it less rushed tobe able to take better notes. Question time was good.

Wonderful coverage on self‐care as a professional. Dr Green is an excellent speaker. Great presentation and insightinto mental health among children and adolescence.

Thank you, amazing presentation. Appreciate the plug of mental health issues for young people‐ (CAMHS NURSE)Helpful info as a nurse parent. Look forward to reading the book

Good to experience a topic which I have been scared to consider as a career path. Made me realise these skills areneeded in all career avenues. Also made the subject less taboo, with good reference to studies and experiences notexaggerated by media.

With the welcoming of a new year, comes review and planning for growth and diversity. The South Australian

Chapter entered the new year with a priority to reach out to members both past and current, to determine

how we as a Chapter could best serve and support our members moving forward. The month of March saw

the conduction of an online survey yielding a response rate of 30%. Whilst lower than hoped, respondents

did provide important and insightful data that will guide session planning moving forward. It was encouraging

to see a mix of community, acute hospital and education focussed respondents to the survey. Networking was

identified as a common theme from respondents regarding their decision to be a member of ACCYPN, and it

is via clinical suppers and events we hope to maximise opportunity for multi‐setting networking and

collaboration in future. Flyers and membership information will soon be distributed to health sites. We

encourage and welcome you, to distribute these amongst colleagues should you wish.

Planning is underway for the mid‐year SA Chapter event, so watch this space. Updates will soon be available

via the Newsletter and ACCYPN’s Facebook page. Be sure to follow the page for ongoing updates.

If you would like further information about the SA Chapter, or would like to have a chat with Anita Minkus or

Amanda Nguyen as Chapter coordinators, please don’t hesitate to make contact via

[email protected] or [email protected]

WA Chapter cont. Thanks for the ideas for future talks. We are always pleased to see student nurses at our suppers and clearly, several of the ideas were from student attendees or student members. As the ACCYPN is for all nurses working in or have an interest in child health or paediatrics, it is not viable for us to host a supper aimed at career pathways for students. In addition, we are not able to provide writing materials for attendees. At most of our events we are lucky to have sponsors who usually have pads and pens but the WA Chapter of the ACCYPN does not have the resources to provide these at every event – sorry.

Our next Clinical Supper is on Wednesday April 18th in the education facility at the Telethon Speech and Hearing Centre, Dodd St, Wembley.

Plans are well underway for the Annual Dinner. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the date has been changed to Tuesday 19th June at Kailis Bros Restaurant again in Leederville. The planned topics are an update of the ORIGINS Project from a paediatric/ child health perspective and Family Centred Care.

The quiz/ trivia night, is still planned for Thursday August 16th. The venue will be confirmed in the near future.

The ACCYPN Conference planning is well in hand. Calls for Abstracts have been sent out so please, share your innovations or your current practice with fellow paediatric professionals from around Australia and our international colleagues. Don’t forget, the dates are: Wednesday‐ Friday; 24th – 26th October. The Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) is our Platinum Sponsor and will host the conference at PCH.

The final event will be a Clinical Breakfast on Saturday 17th November. The topic and venue will be confirmed later in the year.

As a reminder, if any member is interested in either joining the working party or wants to attend a meeting to see what we do, we would be happy to see you and get fresh input. The meetings are bi‐monthly. At the moment, they are still on the PMH site but we will send an update as to where these will be following the opening of PCH. The meeting dates for 2018 are:

Over the past 27 years, Mandie Foster has integrated a clinical role, academic position and higher degree (PhD) into her nursing career. Mandie’s area of expertise is paediatric clinical nursing, education and research, specifically exploring child and family centred care from a multicultural inter/intra‐disciplinary international perspective. Mandie presently coordinates the postgraduate paediatric interactive online courses at Edith Cowan University in collaboration with key stakeholders to provide a curriculum that is synergistically linked to meet the needs of students, industry and organisations.

Mandie has presented at international, national and local conferences, contributed to research initiatives, clinical governance, undertaken consultancy activities and developed strategic research relationships within universities and hospitals.

Board Member Profile – Dr Mandie Foster Lecturer and Research Scholar at Edith Cowan University,

School of Nursing and Midwifery, Joondalup, Perth

Mandie’s present research projects include children’s participation in shared decision‐making within a hospital setting, family centred care within a rural healthcare setting and the newly developed International Network on Child and Family Centred Care under the mentorship/guidance of Professor Linda Shields.

Mandie’s ambition is to be part of an energetic trans‐disciplinary child and young person’s team to professionally and competently contribute to the improved well‐being of children and young people globally.

1. Why did I choose nursing as a career?I wanted a career that was in line with me as a person (fluidic, holistic, dynamic, caring and innovative)where I could grow personally and professionally within an academic context that also synergistically made a difference to my life and the people I was fortunate enough to meet and/or care for.

2. Why did I join the ACCYPN and how long have I been a member?ACCYPN provides a professional forum for nurses within Australia to collaborate and build researchcapacity and knowledge to provide the best evidence‐based child and family centred care to children andyoung people within various healthcare settings. ACCYPN strongly advocates for the rights of childrenbeing respect, participation, honesty, trust and competency within the context of family and community.I joined the college as soon as I arrived in Australia in January 2016 as ACCYPN’s vision, statement, engagement and strategic plan are aligned to my philosophy of paediatric nursing.

3. What is the proudest accomplishment of my career?I can honestly not specify one moment as being the biggest accomplishment of my career as my work hasevolved over time with many wise people adding and facilitating this process. This includes the children, parents, families, staff and wise academics and managers whom have helped me grow to pursue mypassion in child and family centred care. The journey is certainly not over and I am sure that I will meetmany more wonderful people that will join me on this journey. All experiences have helped mould whomit is I am today and not one experience or accomplishment is more special or supersedes the other, theyare all special.

4. What is the favourite part about my job?I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of my job but the area I most enjoy would be feeling that I have made adifference to that person, child or family’s being whether that is through clinical practice, education, research, policy or theory.

5. If I could change one thing in my profession, what would that be?To have access to insurmountable funds to support paediatric multidisciplinary staff worldwide in theirprofessional and personal ongoing development as experts within various healthcare settings andcountries.

6. Describe myself in three wordsCaring, professional and inquisitive!

7. My job fulfils me in the following waysI absolutely love my job as it fulfils my whole being in so many ways. I find my job satisfying, enriching, challenging, engaging, social, emotive, spiritual, creative, fun, innovative, diverse, physical, academic, cultural, professional and personal.

Times Up! Clinical Trials that Fail to Publish Results

For several years, AllTrials has been asking the FDA to censure sponsors who break the law in failing to report clinical trial results. The FDA has assured, publicly and privately, that new clarifying rules ‐ the FDAAA Final Rule ‐ will help them do so but though there are trials on ClinicalTrials.gov whose results are years overdue, to date they have not issued a single fine, despite the power to levy up to $10,000 per day.

So we have sent an open letter to the FDA telling them that today is the launch of an an online tracker (FDAAA.trialstracker.net) so that we can all see who is late according to the FDA’s own registry data. Today is important ‐ it is 13 months since the FDAAA Final Rule that made it crystal clear who needs to report results within a year of a trial ending (13 months includes the extra 30 days grace FDA allows for administration issues). We thought you would like early sight of this letter as the tracker launches: http://www.alltrials.net/news/open‐letter‐to‐the‐fda

We are going to write to them every week from now on with a list of those trials that breach the reporting requirements, as well as a rolling total of the fines they could be levying. We will succeed in recovering missing trials. Some AllTrials supporters have already started a fund to help in achieving this. If you can make any contribution towards its target, that would be wonderful!

Delivering leading online perinatal mental health resources in one placeTens of thousands of women are affected by perinatal depression or anxiety in Australia each year. Prevention and early treatment is crucial in tackling perinatal mental health issues. New mums and mums-to-be now have access to mumspace.com.au - a new website that brings together trusted online support programsand resources for the prevention and treatment of perinatal depressionand anxiety. The Perinatal Depression e-Consortium (PDeC), with funding by the Australian Government, has developed this new website that provides a stepped-care approach to offer a one-stop shop with free access to perinatal mental health resources and evidence-based supports.

Support for the emotional health of new mums at every stepConnecting mums quickly with the level of support they need, MumSpace offers:

• Essential skills in the transition to parenthood with easy access to leading Australian resources and mobile apps for all new parents

• MindMum a new app developed to assist with emotionalwellbeing in the perinatal period, when mums need ‘a little extra help’

• MumMoodBooster an effective online treatment program for perinatal depression and anxiety.

MumSpace is suitable for mums-to-be, new mums, their partners and as a resource that healthcare professionals can refer their clients to.

Why a stepped-care approach? All new parents can benefit from support. Some will require an extra level of support while others will need more intensive treatment and monitoring. A stepped-care approach is a model of mental health care that delivers the level of support and treatment best matched to each person. MumSpace uses this model to enable women to decide which supports they want and need, and allows them to step up or step down a level as their needs change.

What is MumMoodBooster?MumSpace provides access to MumMoodBooster, a new proven effective online cognitive-behavioural therapy treatment program. Available 24/7 and suitable for pregnant and new mums, it is the only e-treatment program of its kind in Australia. Research studies have shown that women who participate show rapid reductions in symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. The program includes six online treatment sessions complemented by SMS support and can be accessed from home or mobile.

MindMum New App – Just Released! This new mobile app supports the emotional wellbeing of mums in the perinatal period. MindMum offers a convenient and easy tool to help new mums monitor their own mood, progress through self-paced guided activities and step up or down to online tools as needed. It is available at MumSpace on both Android and Apple and is free to download.

Helpful ResourcesMumSpace also provides access to a range of evidence-based mental health support tools, apps, helplines and resources. These currently include What Were We Thinking! and Baby Steps, two prominent preventative psychoeducational supports, and links to other Australian perinatal mental health resources.

New website and online programs for perinatal depression and anxiety

MumSpace is an exciting new website delivering leading online perinatal mental health resources to new mums and

mums-to-be and for healthcare professionals to refer their clients. MumSpace is brought to you by the Perinatal

Depression e-Consortium (PDeC) with funding by the Australian Government.

Key resources include the newly launched online perinatal depression treatment, MumMoodBooster, now available

publicly for the first time, and a new mobile app MindMum, offering emotional support for mothers.

How does it work?

MumSpace uses a stepped-care approach to connect expectant and new mums quickly with the level of care they

need, from support in the transition to parenthood, to effective online treatment programs for perinatal depression

and anxiety. MumSpace helps users to decide which of these supports they need, and to step up or step down at

their own pace. There is also information on the causes of depression and help to recognise symptoms.

As a health professional how can I use MumSpace?

MumSpace features three levels of resources to which you can direct your clients:

For All New Parents – expert advice, skills and tips to adjust to life with a new baby, blog, information and

online programs

When You Need a Little Extra Help – MindMum, a new app provides mums and mums to be with problem

solving and coping skills

Online Treatments – depressed or anxious mums or mums to be identified through screening or assessment

can be offered MumMoodBooster, an e-treatment complemented by SMS support

The MumMoodBooster (postnatal) and Mum2BMoodBooster (antenatal) programs are personalized, interactive

online treatments that can be an adjunct to your management by providing evidence-based Cognitive Behavioural

Therapy. Time permitting, you may wish to show new mums how to navigate the treatment programs, and ensure

they feel comfortable. You can support online treatment sessions by discussing progress during your scheduled

appointments.

Attached is additional information to help familiarise yourself with the programs and different levels of care so you

can be confident in referring your clients to the MumSpace resources.

If you have any enquiries regarding this project, please contact me at [email protected] or on (03) 9496 4009.

Yours sincerely,

APNA NATIONAL CONFERENCE PROGRAM 2018 1

A BRILLIANTLY BALANCED PROGRAM THAT WILL EDUCATE AND INSPIRE

Three days of tailored professional development for nurses working in primary health care around Australia, APNA’s 2018 10th annual national conference will deliver inspiring keynotes from nurses leading the way; interactive workshops that will engage you; sessions from nurses making a difference, and the latest research to ensure you have the best information.

APNA has developed a broad and thought-provoking program featuring workshops, keynotes, panels, posters, abstract sessions and more, all valuable and relevant to the daily practice of primary health care nurses.

In line with the Nurseforce for the Future theme, program streams will explore efficient models of care; workforce development, recruitment and retention; embracing change; quality and safety in practice; service innovation and nurse leadership.

The conference will provide delegates with opportunities to:• extend your scope of practice through hands-on clinical and

leadership workshops

• be inspired by peers

• enhance your education and build on current skills, including

updates on key guidelines and pressing policy issues

• learn about new and innovative roles for nurses and models

of care that can be adopted in similar settings

• have input into key issues affecting nursing in primary

health care

• exposure to 50+ industry-leading exhibitors for further

learning and relationship building

• attain the CPD hours required for the year to meet national

registration obligations.

Interactive learning tied in with lively social events will provide
