As usual we have a complete range of exciting, inspiring and educational activities to hopefully encourage you to come and visit our award-winning building. Highlights include a new “Authors Spotlight” series, the University’s Beeline Storytelling Festival for Children, Space Night and of course, we welcome back our students, both new and old. Christmas is also just around the corner and we are looking for creative ideas for a Christmas centrepiece for The Hive’s atrium, please send us your suggestions. There will be a weekend of festive fun, including our Lantern Parade, which is fast-becoming a Hive tradition. We would like your feedback on what you think of our programme; please fill in our short questionnaire enclosed with this edition, or email us your views. We will be celebrating our Summer Reading Challenge achievers in October. Reading is at the heart of everything we do and what better way to spend the darkening evenings than in The Hive, curled up somewhere with a book. Thank you for your support.

Authors Spotlight
Our aim is to bring at least three authors to The Hive each season; a BIG name, a NEW name and a LOCAL name! We are piloting this for Autumn, so please do support us and feedback your suggestions for future author talks.
Deborah Moggach – A Life in WritingBest known for having written the novel filmed as ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Deborah is a prolific writer of fiction and screenplays. Nominated for a BAFTA for her screenplay of ‘Pride and Prejudice’, her novel, ‘TulipFever’ was serialised for Radio 4 Extra this year, and is released as a film in 2017.

The University of Worcester Storytelling Festival for Children
Celebrating another fantastic programme of award-winning authors, storytellers, puppeteers and artists.
Story Pit TalesOn four Saturdays during the Festival we will be joined by professional storytellers who will tell stories from around the world.

Tricksters Original piece of interactive dance and theatre in which all the boys and girls have to find a way to out-trick a trickster and find their way home. Taking inspiration from trickster mythology from around the world the performance explores the hidden world inside these stories.

Little Frankenstein Lempen Puppet Theatre Company
Puppeteer Frank Norman Stein is busy rehearsing his new show “George the Dragon Slayer” but he’s finding it really difficult with his badly made puppets that keep falling apart! Taking inspiration from the scientist Dr Frankenstein, and with the help of the audience he creates a new real live puppet that is destined to change his life forever.

Mad Science – Space Explorers Learn all about rocket building, launching and other space phenomena in this show designed by NASA scientists for Mad Science.

Everything you wanted to know about space. Local astronomers, space authors, rocket scientists – meet them all at Space Night.
A chance for you to quiz the experts about rockets, ask the enthusiasts about the moon and try out their super powerful telescopes. A really hands-on, fun night for all the family, including live rocket launch at 6.30pm (weather permitting).

Talks, displays, tastings, discussions and debates, of particular relevance for school and college students, which explore hopes and fears surrounding the use of food as a weapon of war in World War 2. Exhibitions
Painting and Drawing for PleasureThis exhibition is by local people who wanted to develop and express themselves artistically. With no previous formal training they have done this via the University of the Third Age (U3A). The pictures presented are mainly in watercolour and in different styles.

Art of ConversationArt of Conversation 2016 is Art in Minds Foundations’ annual exhibition to mark World Mental Health Day (10 October). Art in Minds works with adults in the community with experience of mental ill-health. By creating opportunities to exhibit member’s artwork, sharing new creative skills and keeping members and volunteers actively engaged in the local community, the charity helps foster their personal and professional creative interests. www.artinminds.org.uk

Picture This!An exhibition of prize-winning entries in the World Wide Picture Book Competition. Featuring three winning UK illustrators – Anna Doherty, Cindy Wu and Ya Ling Huang – and three winning illustrators from each of the other participating countries, The Netherlands and Germany. The competition, previously known as the Lemniscaat Competition is being promoted in the UK by the International Centre for the Picture Book in Society and Walker Books.

The Hop ProjectThe Hop Project is a contemporary art exhibition touring Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Birmingham and the Black Country in 2016/17. Funded by Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring Programme, the project’s starting point is an exploration of the social and political implications of hop production in the West Midlands. When a new-born baby mysteriously vanishes and crops fail, a zealous Christian family living on the edge of the wilderness begin to turn on each other. A debut film from writer-director Robert Eggers which will stay with you long after the credits roll.

We Did Our Bit Remembrance Day A film of testimony of eleven military veterans of the Second World War who lived in Worcestershire in 2013. New Chapter – Reading Group(For adults with mild-moderate learning disabilities)
Twice monthly (every other Monday) from 12 September 10.30–11.30am
The group looks at and discusses picture books designed for adults, with each member encouraged to contribute to the story by interpreting the pictures. The group is free to attend and new members are always welcome.
Worcestershire’s Learning Service offer one-to-one help with reading for adults who have little or no reading skills and are keen to improve them. Contact 01905 728537 for more information.

Access InformationThe Hive is fully accessible to wheelchair users, mobility scooters and pushchairs. In addition to the main entrance the building can be accessed via an external lift on The Butts and via glass doors at the rear of the building on level 0. There is ramp access to all areas on each floor and lifts give access to all five public floors within the building.
While you are at The Hive, take a look at the products for sale in the shops on level 1 next to the café and level 2 in the Explore the Past area. Items for sale include jewellery, pottery, homeware and lots of local interest books, you’re bound to find something you love!
