COMMUNITY STRATEGIC PLAN Creating our future together Creating our future together I t may seem like a long way off, but the year 2050 will sneak up on us pretty quickly, and it’s important that we think now about what we want our community to look like in the future. That’s why we need you to get involved, and help us develop a Community Strategic Plan for our region that reflects our collective aspirations and priorities for the future. This is going to be really fun and thought provoking, and throughout the first half of 2020 we’ll be asking you all kinds of questions, about all sorts of things! Your ideas, suggestions and feedback will help us plan for the ongoing and future needs of everybody in our region. So come on … it doesn’t matter if you’re young, not so young or in between, if you live, work, study, do business, shop or simply visit our beautiful region we need you to get involved. Nothing’s off the table, so please be honest, be creative and be future-focussed as we create our future vision together. There’s lots of ways to get involved, you can participate in our online polls on Facebook and Instagram, answer our ‘question of the week’, chat with us at our many ‘pop-up’ engagements around the region, register to attend the Think 2050 Symposium, or nominate to become a member of our Think 2050 roundtable sessions. The development of our Community Strategic Plan relies on your input, ideas, suggestions and feedback. So what are you thinking for 2050? Creating ourfuture together

It may seem like a long way off, but the year 2050 will sneak up on us pretty quickly, and it’s important that we think now about what we want

our community to look like in the future.

Your ideas, suggestions and feedback will help us

plan for the ongoing and future needs of everybody in our region.

From the MayorPeta Pinson

W here did 2019 go? I hope it’s not just me, but last year seemed to come and go in the blink of an eye.

But can I tell you how proud I am of what has been achieved by your Council, on behalf of our community in such a short period.

There have been some big issues to deal with, from the bushfire emergency, discussions around our future transport network, the future of our Lake Cathie/Innes estuarine system and the completion of our brand new airport terminal. I can assure you that as your Mayor, I will remain committed to these important issues, and act in the best interests of our community.

Whilst there are many strategic leadership issues to deal with, often the best part of being Mayor is the opportunity to interact with as many of you as possible, listen to your thoughts and priorities for our community and advocate on your behalf.

Another great thing is the honour of being able to welcome new Aussies as part of our Australian Citizenship Ceremonies. Last year I welcomed 107 new mates who come from all corners of the globe, and have chosen to call our region home. The smiles on the faces is an absolute thrill, and on Australia Day this year I’ll be welcoming 50 more proud Aussies.

Our feature story asks you to get involved in a really important planning initiative … Think 2050. I’m really looking forward to hearing our entire community’s thoughts on what you want for our region over the next 30 years, and where Council needs to focus its efforts. So please, share your thoughts and Think 2050!

2020 is going to be another big year for our growing community, and I’ll be continuing to be out-and-about listening to the issues that are important to you, and I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can.

Enjoy your first Community Now Newsletter for the year.

S A V I N G W A T E R . . .

it's everyone's responsibility

Did you know that on average, each of us uses the equivalent of about 20 buckets (or 200 litres) of water a day? Imagine if we could all reduce our use by just four buckets (or 40 litres) per day,

and the difference it would make to our water supply.

We’re encouraging everyone to make some simple changes to the way you use water every day, and it doesn’t have to be difficult, or interrupt your routine, but if we all play our part our environment will really thanks us. There’s lots of information on our website about how you can save water, including how you might be able to save your four buckets a day, or you can pick up a handy fact sheet from our offices.

Have you got a tip or trick to save water? Let us know by emailing [email protected]. We’ll be giving away six water-saving packs for a tip or trick that we can share with our community.

Here’s a few tips to get you started:

Keep a bucket in the shower while you wait for the water to heat up … you can use this water on the garden, for washing windows, washing hard surfaces or even filling pet bowls.

Check your taps for drips. A dripping tap can waste up to three buckets of water a day. That's over 1,000 buckets a year!

Make sure your dishwasher is full so you’re not wasting water washing dishes that aren’t there!

Interesting facts about water

Do you sing in the shower? We’ve put together a playlist of three minute songs you can belt out whilst you’re getting clean (and saving water).

> About 80% of the world is covered by water or ice

> Only 1% of the world’s water is suitable for human needs (97% is salt water in the ocean and 2% is ice)

> Australia is the world’s driest continent, and has the lowest rainfall of all inhabited continents

> The human body loses 3-3.5 litres of water in an average day, which

can increase through exercise and climatic conditions

> Less than 1% of the treated drinking water produced is actually consumed by people … most is used for gardens, showers, toilets, laundry, etc.

> An average person can survive for nearly two months without food, but less than a week without drinking water
