What is Hyperion?

Hyperion is a database that allows you to access the data

very quickly. The company was bought by Oracle in 2007and Oracle has continued to improve the product.

The fancy name for Hyperion is Business intelligence and it aims to support better

business decision-making. Thus a BI system can be called a decision supportsystem(DSS).Though the term business intelligence is sometimes used as a synonymfor competitive intelligence, because they both support decision making, BI usestechnologies, processes, and applications to analyze mostly internal, structured dataand business processes while competitive intelligence gathers, analyzes anddisseminates information with a topical focus on company competitors.

Essbaseis a multidimensionaldatabase management system(MDBMS)that provides a multidimensional databaseplatform upon which to build analyticapplications. Essbase, whose name derives from "Extended Spread Sheet dataBASE",began as a product of Arbor Software, which merged with Hyperion Software in 1998.

The database researcher E. F. Coddcoined the term "on-line analytical processing"(OLAP) in a whitepaperthat set out twelve rules for analytic systems (an allusion to hisearlier famous set of twelve rulesdefining the relational model). This whitepaper,published by Computerworld, was somewhat explicit in its reference to Essbasefeatures, and when it was later discovered that Codd had been sponsored by ArborSoftware, Computerworld withdrew the paper.

Hyperion Planningis a budgetingand forecastingapplication fromOracle formerly owned by Hyperion Solutions Corporation. Hyperion Planninguses Essbase(a multidimensional databaseproduct sold by Hyperion) as adatabase and calculation engine, a relational repository for business logic, andincludes aweb-baseduser interface.

The software allows you to add planning or forecast data to actuals. You can useWeb Forms to add the planning data or use the Excel SmartView tool. Most ofthe Hyperion reporting tools work great with Planning.
