NOC summer work hours begin May 19

All NOC campuses will observe summer administrative office hours from Monday, May 19th, through Thursday, Aug. 1,

2014. Employees will work 10-hour days from 7 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. with 30-minute lunch breaks Monday through Thursday

(offices will be closed on Fridays while summer hours are in effect).

Normal office hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday will resume on Monday, Aug. 4, 2014. (Fall semester

classes begin on Monday, Aug. 18).

Employees who desire to take an hour lunch break while summer hours are in effect should seek supervisor approval and

complete an annual leave form for the entire summer. The form should be returned to Niesha Jones by the close of offices on

Wednesday, May 14. The leave request will not be altered for sick days, vacation days or days when a full hour is not taken.

Time is to be used only to extend the lunch period to one hour. If full hour is not taken, time cannot be used to shorten the work

day. You must have adequate leave balance to participate.

NOC Regent Dugger sworn in, Cowan reappointed

and Dr. Evans rehired at May meeting

The Northern Oklahoma College Board of Regents met May 13 in Tonkawa for their regular scheduled meeting with Chair

Lynn Smith presiding. Other Regents present were Vice-Chair Jeff Cowen, Secretary Linda Brown and members Keith James

and Tom Dugger.

The April 22 meeting minutes were approved, followed by Regents’ comments, administrative updates and updates from

NOC President Dr. Cheryl Evans.

Evans commented that, “The last month of the spring semester is always one of the fullest of the year and the best of the

year. We concluded our year of celebration noting the fiftieth anniversary of the Roustabouts and the NOC Foundation along

with the 10 year anniversary of the Gateway Program in Stillwater. Most importantly, we rejoiced with our students who

completed their associate degrees at Northern on graduation day. We are excited and proud of the fact that a record number,

nearly 900 degrees were awarded this year.”

Other reports were given on personnel changes and reemployment of full-time faculty personnel for the academic year 2014-

2015. Also, Dr. Pam Stinson, associate vice president of academic affairs, spoke to the Regents regarding the new criteria for

Higher Learning Commission accreditation.

A housing project update was presented by Fred Schmidt with Frankfurt-Short-Bruza Associates (FSB) Architects along

with updates from Jason Johnson, NOC vice president for student affairs and Residential Housing Committee chair. The

Regents were told the ground breaking is expected in August with a completion target of July 15, 2015 for the new dorms to be

constructed on both the Tonkawa and Enid campuses and that each would have around 84 beds.

During the meeting, Tom J. Dugger was sworn in as NOC Board of Regents member by Judge Phil Ross to fill the unexpired

term of former Regent Rex Horning, and Jeffrey T. Cowan, who has been reappointed to the NOC Board, was also sworn in by

Judge Ross.

Dugger, Stillwater resident since 1979, is a certified public accountant (CPA) with over 40 years of experience in audit, tax,

and corporate accounting. He graduated from Oklahoma State University where he was inducted as a member of the honorary

scholastic fraternity Phi Kappa Phi and was also a Chi Chapter member of Beta Alpha Psi. He is a past board member of the

Oklahoma Board of Accountancy. He is a past board member of the Oklahoma Society of CPAs, past chair of their political

action committee, and serves as a member of the continuing education committee. Dugger has served as an instructor for

continuing education courses offered by the Oklahoma Society of CPAs and as a reviewer for the American Institute of CPA’s

Peer Review Program. He served on an Oklahoma Department of Commerce steering committee that developed their

educational course and manual entitled, “Energizing Your Local Economy, Business Tax Incentive Training.” He serves on the

OSU School of Accounting Advisory Board and was recognized as a Distinguished Accounting Alumnus in 2005. Tom

received the Oklahoma Society of CPA’s Public Service Award in 2002. In 1995, after being nominated by the Stillwater

Chamber of Commerce, Dugger was honored as the United States Small Business Advocate of the Year. He also served two 3-

year elective terms on the Stillwater City Council, was previously affiliated with the predecessor firm of KPMG and also served

as the audit and tax manager of the Oklahoma Publishing Company.

Dugger’s firm, Dugger & Co., Cpa’s PC, established in 1986, has four full time employees, two of whom have OSU MS-

taxation degrees. The firm serves a variety of clients in Stillwater and north central Oklahoma ranging from individuals and

professional practices to manufacturing and retail clients. The primary focus of the firm is on individual and business taxes and

business operations.

Dugger is an Eagle Scout awarded by the Boy Scouts of America and a prior member of the Oklahoma National Guard. He

is a past president of Stillwater Exchange Club, past treasurer and executive committee member of the Stillwater Chamber of

Commerce and has received the Chamber’s Distinguished Chairman’s Award. Dugger graduated from the first Leadership

Stillwater class and remains a member of the Leadership Stillwater Alumni, is a member of First Christian Church in Stillwater,

is a board member of the nonprofit organization Matthew 25:40 Mission, Inc. and enjoys assisting the National Wrestling Hall

of Fame with their activities.

Tom has been married to Ann Dugger, Ed. D. (OSU) for 42 years. She is an adjunct professor of education at OSU. They

have one son, Jim, who resides in Dallas, with his wife Emily.

Cowan of Ponca City was reappointed to the NOC Board of Regents and sworn in during the meeting. Cowan, President of

RCB Bank, Ponca City, is currently serving as NOC Board vice-chair, and was originally appointed to the Board by Gov. Mary

Fallin in 2011 to serve an unexpired term ending June 30, 2014. He grew up in Arma, Kan., and is a graduate of Northeast

High School and Pittsburg State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with

emphasis in economics and marketing.

Cowan has been in banking for over 32 years and with RCB Bank, formerly Pioneer Bank, for 30 of those years. He started

as a consumer lender and later worked in the commercial lending area. He was promoted to vice president, lending in 1988,

senior vice president in 1996 and executive vice president in 2002. He has served as president of RCB Bank Ponca City since

January of 2008 and was recognized as Officer of the year in 1990 and again in 2001.

Cowan has served as president and campaign chairman of the Ponca City United Way, was treasurer of the Ponca City

Public School Foundation and the Ponca City Economic Development Advisory Board. He served on the Ponca City Planning

Commission, the Ponca Energy Board and was co-chairman of the mayor’s Vision 2020 Task Force, is a graduate of Leadership

Ponca city and has been involved in numerous other civic and community activities.

The Regents took action on several agenda items. The Regents approved a request for suspension of the AAS in Aviation,

Professional Pilot Degree Program; new room and board rates; a master lease purchase program

reimbursement resolution allowing NOC to purchase items, in conjunction with the renovation of

residence halls and cafeteria for the Tonkawa and Enid campuses, prior to receipt of bond proceeds

and be reimbursed upon receipt of those funds; transfer of funds from 290 fund to 295 fund; the

monthly financial report, monthly purchases of $25,000 or more and the Section 13 600-650

allocation request for various projects as presented by Vice President for Financial Affairs Anita

Simpson.

An executive session was held for discussion and possible action regarding the employment,

hiring, or appointment of the president of NOC. After returning to regular session the Regents

approved the rehiring of current NOC President Dr. Cheryl Evans for another year.

The next scheduled meeting will be held June 24 at 1 p.m. in the President’s Conference Room

on the Tonkawa campus.

Mount St. Mary hires Kellen McCoy as new boys

basketball coach

Mount St. Mary plucked its new boys basketball coach from the college ranks, naming Weber State assistant Kellen McCoy

to the position on Wednesday.

McCoy is a Norman High graduate who played at Northern Oklahoma College of Tonkawa and Weber State, where the

5-foot-6 point guard was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Year for the 2008-09 season. He was also a teammate of

Damian Lillard, now with the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers.

McCoy played professionally in Sweden for one season. He has been an assistant coach at Norman North High School,

Emporia State and Weber State, along with serving as a graduate assistant under Lon Kruger at Oklahoma.

McCoy replaces Andy Fisher, who stepped down last month.

NOC Wilkin Hall rededicated and NOC Foundation

gift announced at May 13 event

A rededication ceremony and laying of a new time capsule for the recently restored Northern Oklahoma College (NOC)

Wilkin Hall, and the announcement of a gift to the NOC Foundation (NOCF), was held near the front steps of Wilkin on the

Tonkawa campus Tuesday.

Sheri Snyder, vice president for development and community relations and executive director of the NOCF, served as

Mistress of Ceremonies. Dr. Cheryl Evans, NOC president, delivered the opening remarks and Lynn Smith, chairman of the

NOC Board of Regents, closed the ceremony with congratulatory remarks. Ron Chambers the Most Worshipful Grand Master

of the Masons of Oklahoma Grand Lodge presided over the rededication ceremony.

“The rededication ceremony of Wilkin Hall truly marks another historical day for Northern Oklahoma College as we

celebrate the restoration of one of our beautiful historic buildings on the Tonkawa campus,” NOC President Dr. Cheryl Evans

said in her opening remarks.

She said Northern began in 1901 as the University Preparatory School (UPS) to serve primarily as a “feeder” institution for

the University of Oklahoma and in 1905 Tonkawa citizens along with then UPS President Kelley convinced the legislature that

a companion building to Central Hall was needed to share the classroom load of 410 students, and $60,000 was appropriated for

Wilkin Hall, named after the Honorable James Wilkin, founding father of UPS. The original cornerstone ceremony for Wilkin,

at that time the second building on campus, took place Nov. 13, 1905 under the direction of acting President George W. Finley.

“Over the past year the college has invested over one million dollars in the exterior rehabilitation of both Harold Hall and

Wilkin Hall to restore its original grandeur. Under the direction of GH2 Architects, LLC of Tulsa and the construction of

Hemphill Services, LLC of Broken Arrow, the exterior rehabilitation included the replacement and repair of existing soffits and

cornices, dental work, stucco banding, brick work and columns including cleaning, sealing, tuck pointing and repair of

expansion joints, and painting of the exterior components. In addition, Northern also replaced the windows of Harold Hall. As a

result, the Oklahoma Historical Society State Historic Preservation Office has notified NOC, GH2 Architects, LLC and

Hemphill Services, LLC that we will receive the 2014 State Historic Preservation Officers Citation of Merit Award on June 5.

“Completion of the exterior rehabilitation of both Harold Hall and Wilkin Hall directly aligns with the Northern Oklahoma

College 2013 through 2018 Strategic Plan, goal number three to upgrade facilities for quality and efficiency, thus providing the

best learning environment possible to assist students in reaching their career goals,” Evans said.

She explained that during this restoration process, the original time capsule was found and it was examined by the Oklahoma

Historical Society Preservation Office to see if the contents could be salvaged but they could not. “Therefore we felt it fitting

today as we have restored this charming building to have a rededication ceremony and replace the time capsule, Evans said.

The rededication ceremony included the Masonic cornerstone ritual, to bless the cornerstone of a public building, led by

Chambers. Officers and members of both the Tonkawa local Masonic Lodge and the Grand Lodge of Oklahoma participated in

the ceremony. During the ceremony a list of items to be deposited in a time capsule was read.

The time capsule, to be placed in the cornerstone located at the northeast corner of the building, along with the items to be

deposited in the capsule was on display at the ceremony. Among the many items to be placed in the capsule are a program of

the ceremony; a NOC degree sheet, mission statement, list of regents, administrative council members, Foundation trustees,

graduation programs, tuition and fee list and institutional profile; press release; NOC Fact Book, Crimson Rambler, external

audit report and employee list; photos of the Tonkawa campus; NOC logo item (coasters); and a list of officers of the Tonkawa

Masonic Lodge #157 A.F.&A.M. and other information and objects provided by the Masons. All of the items will be in print

and digital images of the items will be included on a CD and USB flash drive with the exception of the logo items.

In addition to the rededication ceremony, a $50,000 gift from the Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma on behalf of the

Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma was presented to the NOC Foundation by Charles L. Stuckey, president of the Masonic

Charity Foundation of Oklahoma. The NOC and NOCF representatives who accepted the gift on behalf of the Foundation at the

check presentation were Regent Smith, Dr. Evans, Snyder, NOCF Board chairman and Trustee John Martin, and Kirby Tickel-

Hill, director of development and donor relations.

Regarding the rededication and gift Smith had this to say in his closing remarks, “I would like to express my sincere

gratitude to the Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma along with the Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma for making this

event possible.

“Our rededication ceremony symbolizes the completion of our restoration projects on the Tonkawa campus and your

generous gift to the Foundation will make a transforming difference in the lives of our future students.

“The newly established fund will be entitled the ‘Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma Endowment in professional development

and cultural enrichment.’ The primary purpose of this fund shall be to provide professional development programs for the

students of Northern Oklahoma College attending our various locations in Tonkawa, Enid and Stillwater.

This endowment fund is purposed to provide for quality educational and cultural programming, events, and activities for our

students in order to enhance and promote life-long learning, fellowship, service, and professional growth opportunities. Equally

exciting is that the establishment of this fund will support the College’s Strategic Plan by enhancing the quality of life for our

students as well as enhance in the areas of recruitment, retention, and graduation. We are very grateful for the generosity of the

Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma and for them believing in our college mission.

Serving over 5,000 students, NOC is a public two-year community college with campuses in Tonkawa, Enid and

Stillwater. The college is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and offers associate degrees in

three general areas: Arts, Science and Applied Science. The associate degree fulfills lower-division course work which is

applicable towards a bachelor’s degree.

Northern also has been selected by the Washington based Aspen Institute as one of the top 150 community colleges in the

nation and the only one in Oklahoma. Northern was included in the top 120 in the two previous Aspen recognition of excellence

programs in 2011 and 2013.

Linsenmeyer returns to coach Stillwater High Softball By Andrew Glover Stillwater News Press - May 14, 2014

STILLWATER, Okla. — In the late 1990s, Karie Linsenmeyer helped turn around a Stillwater Lady Pioneers softball team

that won five games in the season before her arrival. After spending the last 13 years coaching Northern Oklahoma College,

Linsenmeyer hopes to do the same thing as she returns to Stillwater as softball coach.

“I’m super excited,” Linsenmeyer said. “As a family we are looking forward to coming back to the Stillwater community

and being a part of it again.”

Linsenmeyer was approved at the Stillwater school board meeting on Tuesday and replaces Amber Davis. The former

college coach said she was looking to do something different being a mom of three kids: Kody, 17 — who is a special needs

child, Kameron, who is entering ninth grade and Kaylee, 9.

“(Kody) was a big reason for coming back,” Linsenmeyer said. “I’ll be able to spend more time with him and my other two

kids.”

Last season, the Lady Pioneers went 7-18 and were eliminated in the regional tournament. Eleven of Stillwater’s losses were

by eight runs or more. Linsenmeyer said she is looking forward to the challenge.

“I know there is talent in this town,” Linsenmeyer said. “We’ll just have to work with it and make it better. It may not be

immediate but we will get there.”

Linsenmeyer and her husband Lee will be moving from Tonkawa and is looking for a residence in Stillwater.

Chidester leads Jets’ renaissance Bruce Campbell, Staff Writer Enid News and Eagle - May 14, 2014

ENID, Okla. — Jon Chidester was one of the few bright spots in a 17-39 season for Northern Oklahoma College Enid a year

ago, going 4-1 with a 4.04 ERA and a streak of 16 scoreless innings.

Chidester’s maturity and focused attitude on the mound are among the factors in the Jets’ winning the Region 2 tournament

and hosting the Plains District Tournament that starts Friday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark, with the winner advancing to

the junior college Division II World Series that opens May 24 in Enid.

He will bring a 7-4 record and 3.23 ERA into the tournament. He has struck out 64 batters in 78 innings while walking only

31 batters and allowing only two home runs.

“Time does wonders,’’ Chidester said. “A whole year gives you time to develop. I’m obviously throwing harder than I did

last year and I’m more wise. I know what to do in situations. I’ve learned from experience.’’

Chidester’s velocity has increased from 84 to 88 mph. He has a good breaking ball and changes speeds well.

“He throws three pitches that can get people out,’’ said Jets head coach Raydon Leaton. “The biggest difference between

this year and last year is that he competes so well. He’s matured a lot, which is what you expect from your freshman to

sophomore year.’’

Chidester steps it up a notch when there are runners on.

“I focus up when they get runners on,’’ Chidester said. “My job is not to let them score. I work hard to get outs.’’

Still, Chidester wins by being relaxed.

“I’m pretty laid back,’’ he said. “I don’t go and do a lot of stuff off the field. I’m an easy, happy-go-lucky guy. I’m sure

there are people who have different characteristics than me and still succeed, but this benefits me more.’’

While Chidester has more mustard on his fastball, he still wins with brains first. “You just can’t overpower people with the fastball,’’ he said. “You’ve got to know when to change speeds. Some people like

fastballs. With our team, if you throw us 88 mph, we’re going to pound it. You have to change speeds and keep them off balance.’’

His confidence on the mound has grown with the team.

“Last year, we found ways to lose,’’ Chidester said. “This year, we found ways to win. It’s a lot easier to pitch with a lead. I

definitely have more confidence this year. Our hitters have bailed us out some this year and we (the pitchers) have bailed them

out. When we put everything together, we’re hard to beat.’’

Chidester said sophomore leadership has been another key.

“I’m not a big-time leader by vocalization,’’ Chidester said, “but I do know that people look up to me on the team. I try to do

what I need to do, and hopefully, everybody else follows.’’ He has developed excellent chemistry with catcher Dillon Harp, whose strong right arm keeps base runners from stealing second.

“He makes me better than I am,’’ Chidester said. “I don’t think anyone has stolen on me this year. That gives me a lot of

confidence.’’

Chidester has already signed with NCAA Division II Southwestern Oklahoma State, which takes some pressure off him.

“That was a big thing for me,’’ Chidester said. “I struggled a little bit early, and one of the factors was stress. I was just

trying to do too much and trying to pitch too good to try to go somewhere. When I finally committed, it took some weight off

my shoulders. I’m having fun now.’’

He follows a long line of Jets to SWOSU, coached by Zach Saunders, assisted by ex-Jet Cole Stephens.

“It was a good fit for me,’’ Chidester said. “I like the coaches, and it’s a pitchers ballpark.’’

Chidester, a native of Rome, Texas, is one of several Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex players on the NOC Enid roster. He was

discovered by assistant coach Scott Mansfield playing in the Texas Sticks League there.

His summer teammates included current Jets Haden Johnson and Matt Kennewell, and he played against current teammate

Russ Colgan.

“I really had a good visit,’’ he said. “I liked the ballpark and everything paid off.’’

Chidester was not discouraged by the Jets’ disappointing 2013 season.

“We call last year a fluke,’’ Chidester said. “This year, we’re doing what we set out to do all along. We’re proving it now.

It’s a heck of a turnaround from last year. I’m happy, and I’m really excited where I’m at.’’

Leaton has not set his rotation for Friday’s games when NOC Enid plays Hesston (Kan.) at 3 and Longview (Maplewood,

Mo.) at 6. Chidester has two wins over Hesston this season.

The survivors advance to a 1 p.m. game Saturday. If a second final is needed, it will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday.

“It’s good that we have beaten them before, but that doesn’t matter if we don’t beat them now,’’ Chidester said. “We’re

confident, but we have to take care of business.

“It’s fine and dandy we won the Region, but we have to move past it. We have bigger things to accomplish. That (Region

championship) wasn’t our goal at the beginning of the season. Winning the World Series was.’’

ENID, Okla. — What’s a good encore after two grand slams and eight RBI in a 30-12 rout of the defending national

champion (Murray State) in the Region 2 junior baseball finals Sunday?

For rightfielder Korbin Polston, it would be leading the 33-23 Northern Oklahoma College Enid Jets to a Plains District

championship over Kansas champion Hesston (27-20) and Longview (29-28) at David Allen Memorial Ballpark over the next

two days.

“We just need to play our game,’’ Polston said. “Nobody can beat us when we’re playing our game.’’

The Jets hit .460 as a team in outscoring opponents 49-25 at the Region 2 tournament. Polston hit .438 (7 of 16), raising his

average from .331 to .341.

Polston can’t remember a better day at the plate than he had Sunday.

“I never had two grand slams before,’’ Polston said. “It felt pretty good. It was one of those days when you’re in the zone,

plus the help of the wind. I’ve never been on a team that scored 30 runs before. It was pretty ridiculous.’’

Polston, who played on two state championship teams at Midwest City Carl Albert High School, has seen the Jets go from 17-38 last season to being just three wins away from the Division II Junior College World Series at David Allen beginning May 24.

“The difference is chemistry,’’ Polston said. “We know how to pick each other up. We can say stuff to each other and not

have people snap back and get mad. We have good chemistry. That’s the difference between a good team and a bad team. You

can have all the talent in the world, but if you don’t have chemistry, you won’t win.’’

Despite the team’s struggles, he never thought of leaving NOC Enid or abandoning his dream of a national championship.

“That’s why I came here,’’ Polston said. “Seasons like that happen. I love it here ... the indoor facility, the field we play on

(at David Allen) ... it’s awesome, it’s nicer than most colleges, period.’’

Expectations were high for Polston this season after he hit .372 with four homers and 48 RBI in 2013. His hitting picked up

in late season after being up and down.

“I had some pressure on me,’’ he said. “I was pretty frustrated when I wasn’t doing well, but it’s worked out well for us.

We’re winning games. That’s all that matters to me. I’m starting to hit well now, and I’m helping the team.”

Polston’s defense was never affected by his off-and-on hitting. He has not made an error this season, and has thrown out 11

base runners from his outfield post, including one in the championship game. Polston recently signed with Division II

Southwestern Oklahoma State, along with pitching teammates Jon Chidester, Austin Hilton, Kent Callison and Austin Hannum.

He chose the Bulldogs over a couple of Division I offers.

“It was the best offer that I got,’’ Polston said. “It’s close to home, and I have a couple of buddies going there. It takes a little

bit of pressure off.’’

Polston has been mentioned as a prospect for the major league amateur draft next month, but says he’ll probably be at

SWOSU. His focus today is on Hesston at 3 p.m. and Longview at 6. The survivors play at 1 p.m. Saturday. If a second final is

needed, it will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Jets were 2-1 against Hesston this season and did not play Longview. Hesston and Longview play at noon.

“We have worked our tails off to get here,’’ Polston said. “We didn’t play our best baseball when we played Hesston the

first time. Beating Murray like we did gave us some confidence. We just have to play our game.’’

The Jets will go with Chidester (7-4, 3.23 ERA) against Hesston and Hilton (4-2, 5.09 ERA) against Longview.

Chidester has two two-hitters against Hesston this season.

“We’re going to stick with our M.O.,’’ said Jets head coach Raydon Leaton. “We’re going to try to win two games

tomorrow and see where we’re at. We’re three wins away from another dogpile. They understand that.”

Oklahoma agencies spared mandatory cuts due to revenue woes By BARBARA HOBEROCK, Tulsa World, The Oklahoman - 5/14/2014

OKLAHOMA CITY — The state’s General Revenue Fund collections for April were enough to avoid mandatory cuts to

state agencies.

“It was a make-or-break month, and we just barely made it,” Oklahoma Finance Secretary Preston Doerflinger said on

Tuesday.

“April collections needed to be within 95 percent of the estimate, or agencies would have had mandatory, across-the-board

budget reductions. April General Revenue Fund collections were down but came in at 98.4 percent of the estimate and are

sufficient to avoid forced budget reductions this month.”

General Revenue Fund collections in April brought in $690.5 million, 1.5 percent less than last year’s April collections and

$11.2 million, or 1.6 percent, below the official estimate. The Fiscal Year 2014 budget is based on the estimate.

Glen D. Johnson, chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education, welcomed the news. He said the system

has seen an increase in students and has several initiatives underway. Making cuts in the last two months of the fiscal year

would have been difficult, he said.

Mandatory budget reductions occur if the state declares a revenue failure, which occurs when year-to-date revenues are

below the estimate by more than 5 percent and cash flows are insufficient to make full monthly allocations to agencies for the

entire fiscal year.

“While we’re in the clear for now, an extremely weak May or June could still force a revenue failure later, since our reserves

are exhausted after operating below the estimate for much of the year,” Doerflinger said. “We still need a strong finish to the

year to keep the appropriated budget intact.”

Total income tax collections for April brought in $397.2 million, 7.1 percent less than last April.

Sales tax collections generated $164.9 million, 7.5 percent more than last April.

Gross production tax collections brought in $37.9 million, 10 percent more than last April.

Motor vehicle tax collections generated $24.2 million, 43.4 percent more than last April.

Other revenue collections were $66.3 million, 3.4 percent less than last April.

NOC Enid wins regional

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. — Northern Oklahoma College Enid Sunday in the Region 2 tournament championship game gave

up 12 runs and committed five errors.

And beat defending national champion Murray State by 18 runs.

Tournament MVP Korbin Polston hit two grand slams and drove in a school-record eight runs and teammate Russ Colgan

hit two home runs and drove in seven runs as the Jets (35-21) completed an unbeaten run in the tournament by eliminating the

Aggies 30-12.

NOC Enid hit nine home runs in a 22-hit attack taking advantage of short fences and the wind blowing out.

“This was the first time in the three years we have been coming here where the wind was blowing out,’’ said Jets coach

Raydon Leaton. “The balls were jumping out left and right. You didn’t feel safe with a 19-11 lead because of that.’’

The Jets ended any mystery by scoring 12 runs in the sixth. Reliever Austin Hannum allowed only two runs in four innings

of relief to secure the victory.

“It was a lot of fun,’’ said Leaton about the Jets’ first regional championship since 2005. “It doesn’t get much better than

this.’’

The Jets will host the district tournament which begins Friday. They will play Hesston, Kan., and Longview, Mo., in a round

robin format Friday.

The survivors return Saturday. Game times have not been set.

“Now we have to regroup and be ready to go,’’ Leaton said. “Our goal this season wasn’t to win Region 2, but a national

championship. We have to get through the next phase.’’

If the Jets win district, they will be bound for the Division II World Series at David Allen Memorial Ballpark May 24-31.

Polston was joined on the all-tournament team by Colgan, Jerame Littell, Nick Yoning, Kory Floyd and Jon Chidester, the

winning pitcher in a 7-3 win over Redlands Friday.

NOC Enid scored 49 runs in its three games.

“We’re playing really well right now,’’ Leaton said. “We’re playing with a lot of confidence and, hopefully, that will carry

over into next weekend.’’

The Jets scored eight in the third, seven in the fourth, three in the third and 12 in the sixth.

Yoning and Floyd both hit two home runs Sunday. Yoning was 5-for-7 with three RBI. Floyd had two solo shots and scored

four runs. Littell was 3-for-5 with four RBI with a home run and double. He scored four runs.

Polston “was squaring up balls right and left,’’ Leaton said.

“He was hitting the snot out of the ball,’’ Leaton said. “All the guys, though, have to have good tournaments if you’re going

to win it. We had 22 hits. You have guys on base to have all those grand slams.’’

Murray State had tied the game with four runs in the fourth, they cut the lead to 18-11 with three runs in the sixth, but scored only once the rest of the way.

Winning pitcher Scotty Harvill hung in well early when the Jets were having defensive problems.

“We were kicking the ball around early, but Scotty hung in there and battled,’’ Leaton said. “Austin Hannum right the ship

just like you hope a third-year sophomore would do.’’

Oklahoma higher education leaders hope to avoid

budget cut

Level funding is vital to the state’s Complete College America goals and economic growth, they say.

As lawmakers continue to craft the state budget this week, higher education leaders say retaining the current

level of funding is critical to the state’s college completion goals and economic growth.

Officials launched the Complete College America initiative in 2011, with Gov. Mary Fallin announcing the

goal to boost the number of college degrees earned per year by 67 percent over 12 years. That would require

adding 1,700 degrees conferred each year through 2023.

“We’ve had a really good plan with the State Regents working to try to increase the number of college

graduates,” Sen. Jim Halligan, R-Stillwater, said Wednesday.

That effort is important to providing a good supply of people with various degrees needed for businesses to

expand in Oklahoma, Halligan said.

He cited General Electric Co.’s new oil and gas research facility being built in Oklahoma City. GE is

planning to hire about 125 people, each with a six-figure annual income.

“The governor has been a champion of Complete College America, but in order to do that we have to have

adequate funding for higher education,” said Halligan, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on

Education.

Budget includes cut

The fiscal year 2015 budget Fallin proposed in February includes a 5 percent reduction for most agencies —

including higher education — because estimates showed the state will have less to spend.

“The governor is trying to balance the budget in a way that is responsible and avoids deep cuts in important

services, including higher education,” said Alex Weintz, her communications director. “In a year with a $190

million budget hole, modest funding reductions for virtually every area of government are being seriously

considered, with the exception of K-12 education.

“Negotiations with the Legislature are ongoing and fluid.”

Halligan said he hopes the House, Senate and governor can reach a compromise to keep higher education

funding flat.

“I think there are vehicles to make it happen if they all agree,” said Jimmy Harrel, chairman of the Oklahoma

State Regents for Higher Education.

“Getting a higher education degree is so important that I think the governor, the president pro-tem and the

speaker will do their best to fund it,” Harrel said.

“It’s always serious when you have to take a cut, especially with the ongoing rise in healthcare,” he said.

“Anyone who takes a cut is going to feel it’s unfair.”

Rep. Harold Wright, chairman of the House Higher Education and CareerTech Committee, said there is a

push from the House is to keep funding at the break-even point, and perhaps even give a little extra to fund

increased costs for things like health insurance and utilities.

“I would support that, but it may not be realistic,” said Wright, R-Weatherford.

Increase requested

The State Regents requested an increase of 7.7 percent — or an additional $76.3 million — over the current

fiscal year. Chancellor Glen Johnson said every new dollar in the fiscal year 2015 budget request is tied directly

to the Complete College America degree-completion initiative.

By 2020, 62 percent of jobs in Oklahoma will require at least some post-secondary education, Johnson said.

Viewpoint with Gary Trennepohl: Earning degree a

life-changing experience By GARY TRENNEPOHL - Tulsa World, 5/15/2014

All of us have life-changing events. They occur infrequently but, when they happen, they put us on a

different path. This month Oklahoma State University-Tulsa and universities across the country are celebrating

a significant life-changing event for their graduates – completion of an academic degree.

Earning your degree gives you the chance to change your future dramatically. While a degree doesn’t

guarantee success, it gives graduates the opportunity to succeed.

I’d like to offer a few pieces of advice I’ve learned on my path from college to career.

My first piece of advice is to “Set your career goals as early in life as possible.” Every young person is asked

from the time they are 8 years old, “What are you going to do when you grow up?” Even though you may be

unsure at 8 or 18 years old, college remains a good choice for your future.

I figured out my career goal at the end of my sophomore year at the University of Tulsa. I decided to earn a

Ph.D. in finance and become a university professor and financial consultant.

After six years in the Air Force, an MBA and Ph.D. and more than 20 years as a professor, I became dean of

the Spears School of Business at OSU. I had essentially reached and exceeded my goal. This leads to my second

piece of advice, “Opportunities come from unexpected places. Take advantage of the moment.” Be willing to

accept new challenges that come your way.

Jim Halligan, then-president of OSU, convinced me to leave that enjoyable job as business dean and apply

for the challenging job as the first president of OSU-Tulsa.

At the time OSU-Tulsa had virtually no permanent funding, lots of political challenges and a staff that had

experienced significant turmoil. Hey, that sounds like a fun opportunity! But President Halligan prevailed, I

took the job and it was one of my most rewarding experiences.

Since 1999, OSU-Tulsa has become a model for higher education in urban areas. The majority of OSU-Tulsa

undergraduates attend Tulsa Community College and then transfer to OSU-Tulsa. It is one of the most cost-

effective ways to provide high quality, internationally recognized degrees.

This leads to my final piece of advice, “Take advantage of the reputation of your degree.” OSU-Tulsa

graduates can leverage the OSU brand. OSU alumni and company recruiters know and respect the OSU name

— it will open doors.

Higher education has changed dramatically during the past 50 years. I started college in 1964 directly from

high school. Typically one-third of us graduated in about four years, while the rest dropped out and often never

finished. If you dropped out or didn’t go in the first place, you passed up the opportunity to earn a degree.

OSU-Tulsa is a special place. It makes it possible for students of all ages and stages in their careers to

achieve their goals. Our undergraduate student body is a little older on average at age 26, and what is strikingly

different are the students who are mid-career earning a degree that eluded them earlier in life.

Graduation is a special ceremony, especially as OSU-Tulsa celebrates its 15th anniversary. For me it’s very

rewarding to see the excitement in our students’ eyes as they receive that treasured diploma. It is truly a life-

changing experience!

Gary Trennepohl was the first president of OSU-Tulsa, serving from 1999-2009, and is currently the

ONEOK chair in finance and President’s Council Endowed Chair in the OSU Spears School of Business.

Trennepohl will be the keynote speaker at OSU-Tulsa’s 15th graduation ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May

12, at the Expo Square Pavilion.

NOC boys’ basketball camp applications are now available

Applications for “Success Is a Choice,” the NOC boys’ basketball day camp, are now being accepted, according to

Northern Oklahoma College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Donnie Jackson. Camp dates on the Tonkawa campus are

June 2-4, 1-3:30 p.m. for boys entering Grades 1-3; June 16-18, 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. for boys entering Grades 4-6; and June

16-18, 1–3:30 p.m. for boys entering Grades 7-9.

“Reservations need to be made in advance,” said Jackson, who will direct the camp with the aid of several camp

coaches. “The camp for Grades 1-3 is a skills development camp and the camps for Grades 4-6 and Grades 7-9 are

shooting camps.”

No meals will be served; however, a concession stand will be available.

NOC girls’ basketball camp applications are now available Applications for the NOC Lady Mavs summer girls’ basketball camp are now being accepted, according to Northern

Oklahoma College Head Women’s Basketball Coach Greg Krause. Camp dates on the Tonkawa campus are June 2-4 for girls

entering Grades 1-3, June 8-13 for girls entering Grades 4-7 and July 6-11 for girls entering grades 8-12.

Krause said, “Air conditioned dorms house our campers. Two gyms are available, the main gym being air conditioned. Also,

a six-lane, Olympic-size indoor swimming pool is open for the campers’ use, and our college cafeteria provides meals.” Each

camper will receive a T-shirt and a regulation size camp basketball.

The training includes mass drills and station drills. Team fast break offense skills will be taught, including work on floor

NOC‘s DMI Accepting Applications The Digital Media Institute (DMI) at Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa is now accepting applications for the 2014-2015

school year. Applications can be downloaded at http://dmi.noc.edu

The DMI program focuses on specific methods used to transform ideas and concepts of digital media into creative digital

portfolios and demo reels that show the skills needed for today’s competitive employment environment. Currently, DMI

students are working on a project for a company that is producing a documentary on the sinking of the Sultana, the worst

maritime disaster in American history. They also created more than 30 short promotional segments for the 25th Anniversary of

Remington Park and for the 25th Running of the Oklahoma Derby.

According to Brad Matson, DMI director, “The DMI program is designed to examine the technologies and techniques

commonly used in animation and design. We offer a comprehensive curriculum that can help students gain digital design and

animation skills as well as experience in the real world production environment. ”

All students are immersed into the essentials of broadcast design, 2D and 3D animation, visual effects, digital filmmaking,

video production and interactive DVD authoring, thus gaining the basis for the specialized instruction within the DMI.

“Students will gain the skills necessary not only to work effectively in the existing areas of digital media production but to help

shape the future of technology as an employee as well,” Matson said.

DMI graduates will have the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate their ideas through the art of advanced

computer graphics in order to gain entry-level work or employment that could offer greater challenges in gaming, motion

graphics, visual effects and video/film production.

Job opportunities in the entertainment industry exist in video game asset creation, broadcast design, visual effects and digital

film. Other opportunities are in the fields of government, healthcare, military and industrial professions with simulations and

animations, advertising, communications and marketing, commercial spots, bumpers, rebranding, social media promotions,

station identity and corporate identity.

Also, openings exist in web design and development, including streaming media, nonlinear editing for video production and

digital films. Several companies contact Matson when they have a position to fill.

“CVW Media in Norman has six DMI graduates working for them,” Matson said. “Kevin Hanley, CEO of CVW Media,

loves the creativity and the work ethic of DMI students, so he hires some of my students every year. Digital Tutors, world-wide

leader in online media, currently has five graduates employed at the studio.”

Coursework in the Digital Media Animation and Design program includes 3D modeling, texturing, animation and

rendering in Autodesk’s award winning Maya, 3DS Max and Mudbox; motion graphics for broadcast and film with Adobe

Photoshop and After Effects; nonlinear digital video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro; designing and creating web sites for

showcasing student talents using Adobe’s Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash; and authoring DVD’s for student demo reels

with Adobe’s Encore and Audition.

Matson studied film making and video productions at the University of Oklahoma and has worked in the media field for the

achievements in higher education.

In 2009 he received the prestigious 2009 DaVinci Fellow Award, given to college instructors for creative thinking in higher

education. He was acknowledged for his creative approach to video design and for giving students practical work experience

during their educational program based on his partnership with “Game=Life,” a video game production company founded by

Northern DMI graduate Adam Grantham. Through this partnership, DMI students contributed to a medicinal video game that

SUMMARY: Reporting to the Vice President for Development and Community Relations, the Director of Marketing assumes

responsibilities for assisting in the marketing, advertising and promotion initiatives as it is related to Northern Oklahoma

College with campuses in Tonkawa, Enid, and Stillwater.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include:

· Develop, design and arrange advertising for NOC for all forms of media, i.e., radio, television, newspapers,

publications, billboards and the World Wide Web.

· The successful candidate will need to work independently and as part of a team to lead brand strategy development to

ensure that the college continues on its respective growth paths.

· The employee will work with recruiting personnel to integrate marketing strategies into the recruiting plans for

individual programs, including advertisements, communication plans, presentations, events and other efforts.

· The candidate will be asked to identify relevant professional organizations and media that provide marketing

opportunities and then develop strategies to work with these organizations.

· Work with the area communities – chambers, businesses, industries, schools to provide general public relations for

NOC.

· Work job/career fairs and other events as appropriate (some evenings and weekends may be required)

· Assume other responsibilities as assigned and will work on various projects/assignments as they may rise.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess good computer skills that include, but not

limited to, InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Effective oral and written communications skills are essential. The applicant

should also be adept at the use of digital cameras. Time management is crucial as deadlines will need to be made for the NOC

campuses in Enid, Tonkawa and Stillwater. The successful candidate will establish and maintain cooperative working

relationships with those contacted in the course of work/creativity; strong organizations skills; and the ability to work in a team

environment are required.

NORTHERN OKLAHOMA COLLEGE Position Description

Position Title: Head Softball Coach—Tonkawa

Department: Athletics

Reports to: Director of Athletics

SUMMARY: Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa is seeking a Head Softball Coach to manage, supervise, and coordinate the

women's softball program that competes in the NJCAA Division I – Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference (OCAC). The

Head Coach is responsible for the organization and administration of all aspects of the softball program with significant

responsibilities in areas including staff supervision, teaching and implementing skills and strategy, recruiting, budget

development, scheduling, purchasing, facility maintenance, public relations and implementation of NJCAA, conference and

institutional policy and regulation. Academic duties will also include a half-time teaching load.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include:

• Establish schedules and make travel arrangements.

• Responsible for administration of operational budget.

• Coordinate recruitment and scholarships.

• Monitor academic advisements and progress of student-athletes.

• Represent the College in meetings, which pertain to women’s softball.

• Responsible for practice and game preparation, which includes scouting of opponents.

• Purchase and store equipment and uniforms.

• Collect and post individual and team statistics to the NJCAA website

• Be available during posted office hours for members of the women’s softball team and students

• Compliance Responsibilities: Insure that NJCAA and College policies and mandated requirements are correctly

interpreted and met, and that documentation is maintained per Athletic Department policies and procedures.

• Ensure that all actions of coaches and student-athletes of said team are performed with the appropriate level of

instruction, safety precautions, and training and that the physical well-being of everyone is taken into account in all that

is done as a member of the program.

• Provide leadership in establishing, regulating, publicizing and enforcing all team regulations regarding personal

conduct.

• Developing and implementing a successful program for student-athlete recruitment.

• Be responsible for the care of all athletic equipment and uniforms used in said sport.

• Ensure that student-athletes have completed all required eligibility forms, etc. prior to participating. In addition, the

head coach shall keep the Office of the Director of Athletics & Recreation notified of all changes in the team roster.

• Provide direct supervision for all assistant coaches.

• Teach 15 hours of coursework annually.

• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree required. Coaching experience preferably on the college level. Candidates must have

excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and initiative, as well as the ability to perform within a

dynamic team environment.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: The preferred candidate will have a minimum educational level of a master’s degree

with teaching experience in English, mathematics, science or social sciences.

Northern Oklahoma College Position Description - Tonkawa Campus

Position Title: GEAR UP College Liaison/ Coach Department: Enrollment Management & Registration; Reports to: Vice President for Enrollment Management FLSA Statue: Exempt

SUMMARY: The GEAR UP College Liaison/Coach will work with the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education

(OSRHE)– a federally funded initiative aimed at early student awareness and readiness for college assisting the identified

GEAR UP Local Education Agencies (LEA's) 7th – 12th grade students in matriculation to Northern Oklahoma College. The

GEAR UP program specifically targets first generation college students/parents and minority students/parents. The College

Liaison/Coach will primarily assist and support the four specified LEA's students with college preparation and career goals and

options. In addition to working with the four specified high schools and their students, the College Liaison/Coach will work

with parents, high school counselors and administrators to inform them of specific college requirements, financial planning,

scholarships, and student support services. They will work with the Northern’s faculty advisors to identify academic options,

choose academic strategies, and help with student enrollment. The College Liaison/Coach will also act as a resource for

academic information, financial aid information and decision-making strategies once the student arrives on the campus. This

position will work with students from GEAR UP schools in the areas of identifying student support services that will aid in the

transition to college. The College Liaison will assist the college in tracking and understanding the perspective of a GEAR UP

student and will work to implement degree completion activities. The GEAR UP College Liaison/Coach will be expected to

work with each entity; GEAR UP schools, colleges, and students/parents in an effective, positive, and professional manner to

convey to a diverse constituency the features and benefits of a higher education degree.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include:

Represent GEAR UP at high schools, community colleges, events, and public functions to encourage enrollment of

students at Northern Oklahoma College.

Work as part of direct student services team in each LEA to develop and carry out a plan for preparing students for

success in college.

Serve as part of the LEA GEAR UP advisory/evaluation team and assist GEAR UP students with making college/career

plans and actively seek to build relationships with schools, students’ parents and communities to promote higher

education and build support for student success.

Provide continual transitioning and academic support for GEAR UP students during their higher education process.

Schedule and pre-plan GEAR UP high school college day visits on campus.

Conduct campus tours and conference with GEAR UP students and parents whenever they visit the college campus.

Communicate admission policies to GEAR UP students, parents, school administrators, counselors, and teachers.

Evaluate high schools transcripts to determine eligibility for admission to Northern or other institutions of higher

education.

Assist with the GEAR UP students specified college admission, financial aid, student support and academic process.

Develop and maintain tracking system for GEAR UP schools' graduating seniors, who are full-time and part-time

students and develop intervention strategies to assist GEAR UP students with college success and completion.

Work with instructors to provide and support GEAR UP students.

Work with college administrators to identify students at-risk for non-completion of their degree or for students who have

completed significant hours with no degree and Work with targeted GEAR UP students on degree completion activities.

Other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management.

QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with high school and/or college age students. Must have clear understanding of the

needs of GEAR UP qualified students and a knowledge of college services including financial aid, degree completion activities

and academic support programs, Candidate must demonstrate ability to use independent judgment and also show organizational,

communication and leadership skills. Candidate must be skilled at delivering presentations to both small and large

groups. Successful candidate must provide a cellular telephone for work-related activities and be willing to travel.

EDUCATIONS and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in related discipline, as well experience working with high school

and/or college age students. Candidate must have a high degree of familiarity with GEAR UP, knowledge of Northern’s

requirements, programs, and degrees. A candidate who is familiar with the region where GEAR UP schools are located will be

a plus.
