ability of its newest publication: SFMRB Report No. 8 entitled "A Sizing of the Metal Finishing Industry." This report investi- gates the economic downturn of recent years and its effect on the metal finishing industry as viewed by the major finishing chemical suppliers. The data for the report were gathered from questionnaires distributed to the key supply firms with subsequent telephone follow-ups and a face- to-face meet ing involving the leaders of the industry. Answers to the following questions are addressed in the report: How many plating shops are operating within the NAFTA trade zone? What is the size of the proprietary plat ing chemical marke t within NAFTA? What is the end-user market share of plating chemicals for various segments of the econo- my? How many plating facilities have closed since 2000? Have the European and Far East t rade areas taken marke t share from NAFTA? What has been the affect of Y2K and 9/11 on the plat ing industry? How have productivity and employment levels changed in plating shops in recent years? What is the pr imary challenge facing the plating industry? How do chemical supply firms plan to address these challenges? The

metal finishing industry in North America has been faced with dra- matic economic, technical, and regulatory challenges in recent decades. An industry under diverse pressures needs basic sta- tistica] information to know where it stands and to guide its future course. The SFMRB was created in 1991 to meet this need. SFMRB is managed by the Surface Finishing Indust ry Council (SFIC), which is funded and supported by the American Electroplaters and Surface Finishers Society (AESF), the Metal Finishing Suppliers' Association (MFSA), and the National Association of Metal Finishers (NAMF).Report No. 8 is available from association head- quarters at 12644 Research Parkway, Orlando, FL 32826- 3298. The price is $250 for mem- bers of the sponsoring organiza- tions and $1,000 for nonmembers.

The Society of Manufactur ing Engineers (SME) is pleased to announced that it has received a 2003 Citation for "Excellence in Practice" from the American Society of Training Development (ASTD). The honor is of special note due to SME's status and size; SME was the only nonprofit association to receive a Citation, and its staff size

(160) is far smaller than most other recipients, which included General Motors, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Pfizer, Dew Chemical, Caterpillar, and several other Fortune 500 cor- porations. The Citation honored SME's performance improvement strategies to improve customer value and loyalty.

Electroplating Know How Basics is a two-day program based on the world-famous correspondence course, Electroplating Know How II. It covers such topics as mathe- matics of electroplating; chem- istry and electrochemistry of elec- troplating; environmental issues; safety issues; plat ing cycles; cleaning and rinsing techniques; and testing procedures. The program is designed for supervisors, operators, sales representatives, engineers, and others desiring a bettor understand- ing of the basics of electroplating. Dr. Kushner, Director of the Kushner Electroplating School, teaches the program. Electroplating, to be offered on September 2 in conjunction with the Southern Metal Finishing 2004 Conference in Charleston, SC. This half-day seminar will be taught by Dr. Art Kushner. The training materials are taken from the Electroplating Know How II train- ing programs and Dr. Kushner's many years of consulting and training experience. The program will discuss such topics as: (1) Cyanide, noncyanide, alkaline, and acid zinc plating; (2) Zinc/cobalt, zinc/iron, zinc/nickel, and tin/zinc alloys; (3) Chromate conversion coatings; (4) Nonchromium post- plating coatings; and (5) Testing of zinc and zinc alloy plated deposits. The program is designed for indi- viduals requiring more informa- tion about the many different types of zinc and zinc alloy plating. To register for this program or for more information, please call Bobby Kushner at 408-749-8752; fax, 408-74900176; E-mail, infoC~latingschool.com. It is with deep regret that Belmont Metals Inc. announces the passing of its recent past pres- ident Robert V. Henning, Sr. on May 1, 2004 at the age of 87. Henning had just celebrated his 65th year of service at Belmont,

almost 30 of those years as President. He was born in Brooklyn, raised his family in Garden City, and lived in Glen Cove, NY, at the time of his death. He was a graduate of Lehigh University and did postgraduate work in metallurgy at Columbia University. Henning leaves a strong legacy to this family owned and operated nonferrous metals business. His father founded the company in 1896 and his son, Richard, succeeded him as President this past fall, though Henning remained active until recently. He will be remembered for his incredible work ethic, dedi- cation to the family tradition, and ethical values. Pictured with Henning are two of his sons, Robert, Jr., and Richard, and his brother Theodore (far right), all of whom today continue the family tradition at Belmont. www.belmontmet als.com
