Concilium Technologies Stand 31

In any energy storage system, be it high voltage/high current or small cell systems for IoT devices, specialised test tools are needed to increase productivity and provide accurate insights into performance and ef f ic iency. Home energy management systems (HEMS) and electric/hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV) have many s y s tem components that need to operate e f f i c ien t l y. Power convers ion efficiencies also need to be accurately analysed and it is essential that these tools are easy to use and can be derived from standard off-the-shelf instrumentation rather than having to resort to expensive custom systems. In the South African context, it is also important to have local technical support, post sales application support, and fully vendor accredited repair and calibration facilities with international traceability. Concilium is Keysight’s authorised technology partner in sub-saharan Africa and will be exhibiting a range of Keysight T&M solutions for the energy storage industry.

Why store energy? Any electrical network needs to balance supply and demand at every operational moment. This is not always an easy

task. Renewable energy resources have made the supply more variable and less predictable than previous generation methods. Storage systems can relieve this complex balancing task. Network grid operators can use storage systems for transmission and distribution upgrade deferral, by using a storage system to shave the load peaks. Electronic power sources such as PV inverters and wind turbines do not provide frequency regulation. A storage system can be deployed to mitigate these variations and restore appropriate frequency regulation. No matter how the electricity is generated, stored and distributed, the important role of copper is undisputed. Copper has the highest conductivity of all non-precious metals and this, combined with its high ductility, good machinability, high strength, ease of joining and good resistance to corrosion, make copper the first choice as a conductor for electrical applications.

PHD Powerhouse Stand 17

In order for renewable energy to really make a difference, absolute control over when it delivers energy is necessary. PHD’s decentralised energy storage systems are “topped up” with solar PV and then called upon when peak reserves are limited. To this end we will be presenting the AEC self-consumption inverter from Taiwan. The unit ensures full control over when and how much energy to store. Coupled with LifePo storage, system life cycles of up to 15 years are achievable. This is one of the first battery/grid-tied solar PV systems to approach parity in production costs, while limiting or even eliminating your carbon footprint.

HySA Infrastructure Stand 4

The DST developed the national hydrogen and fuel cells technologies (HFCT) research, development and innovation (RDI) strategy,

branded Hydrogen South Africa (HySA), consisting of three centres of competence(CoCs) – HySA infrastructure, HySA catalysis, and HySA systems. The HySA infrastructure centre of competence is co-hosted by the Northwest University (NWU) and the CSIR, is directed by Dr. Dmitri Bessarabov. The long-term vision is that it will be a leading, well-established and internationally recognized CoC for research and development in hydrogen production, storage and distribution, addressing the specific needs of South Africa. We believe that we will be able to contribute to the preparat ion of South Africa to participate in hydrogen-related applications, primarily by beneficiating its resource base in becoming a significant supplier of material, components, products, sub-systems and systems for export, as well as appropriate introduction of technology, related to hydrogen production, storage and distribution in the South African economy. Our exhibit consists of working small scale prototypes showcasing the different hydrogen related research and exiting new technologies.

Electrical power is the foundation of modern life. It is the main resource for industry and infrastructure, the enabler of growth and progress, and is paving the way for a more friendly environment for the future. Re-development of the energy system is gaining momentum due to the renunciation of fossil fuels, market liberalization, and growing environmental awareness. At the same time, there is a shift from centralized, large-scale power generation to a highly-complex, distributed generation landscape in which cost-efficient integration of renewables is paramount, and demand for energy is continuing to rise.

This development is resulting in new and highly demanding challenges. For example, grids must now be flexible enough to handle both bidirectional power flows and intermittency. New capacity has to be developed, existing equipment has to be optimized in order to meet future demands. The solution will determine just how efficient, reliable and safe power systems will be in complex modern enviroments with the support of the new options created by growing digitalization.

Siemens helps to make future energy systems secure and stable - from the power producer to the customer. The electrical energy storage system SIESTORAGE is a key element of Siemens solutions towards the three main challenges of power supply: optimizing grid connections, providing flexible energy for modern grids, and supporting large energy consumers. With Siemens, you benefit from a comprehensive portfolio and a fully integrated solution.

IDC Stand 30

The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) was established in 1940 by an act of Parliament. It was established to spearhead the development of domestic industrial capacity, especially in light of the shortages of manufactured goods experienced as a result of the disruption of trade between Europe and South Africa. For more than 75 years, the IDC has been instrumental in implementing South Africa’s industrial policy, establishing some of the industries that have since become the cornerstones of the country’s manufacturing sector. These include the petrochemical and mineral beneficiation industries. Apart from large industrial projects in these industries, the IDC has been instrumental in the establishment of other industries including fabricated metals, agro-industries and textiles. The South African government expanded the IDC’s mandate, allowing the corporation to invest in projects spread across the rest of Africa.
