Temperature/Humidity Data Loggers with Ethernet/LAN Interface TandD Corporation Model TR-71W and TR-72W Thermo Recorders are data loggers that incorporate an integrated ethernet/LAN interface for monitoring both temperature and humidity. These capabilities allow for quick and easy collection of recorded data and mon- itoring of current conditions. The TR-71W can even send warning E-mails and text messag- es to cell phones. Both of these units can be connected to a local area network through ei- ther a standard 10/100 base-T ethernet or through an 802.11b wireless LAN connection. TandD has introduced a powerful new soft- ware tool that has been specially designed to use with a LAN to make settings for and carry out the automatic downloading of recorded data from TR-71W/72W Loggers. The TR- 71W is a temperature data logger with a range of 40 to 110 C with optional sensors avail- able with a range from 60 to 155 C. The TR-72W is a temperature and humidity data logger with a range of 0 to 50 C and 10% to 95% RH. TandD Corporation, P.O. Box 321, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, Ph: 1-518- 669-9227, www.tandd.com. Turnkey NIR-Based Dryer Analytics System for Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical Industries Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. announces a new near-infrared (NIR)-based dryer analyt- ics system ideal for a range of applications in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical in- dustries, including API and tablet manufactur- ing. These tools allow greater process under- standing and optimization of cycle times and product quality and consistency. The turnkey system has been designed from the ground up to offer the perfect combination of software and hardware for efficient and accurate NIR drying analyses. The complete system allows faster realization of process and product im- provements than was previously possible be- cause the need for integration engineering has been virtually eliminated. Drying is a key factor in tablet manufacturing with the main goal of fit-for-purpose and consistent endpoint determination for real-time product and pro- cess control. The new Thermo Scientific dryer analytics system combines the Antaris EX FT- NIR process analyzer with specialty fiber op- tics probe options, specifically designed for in- dustrial drying processes. This complete plat- form provides precise measurements to adapt processes or determine endpoints, thus im- proving yields, consistency, and cycle times through the elimination of laboratory testing. The Antaris EX FT-NIR process analyzer, part of the dryer analytics system, is supplied ready-to-use in Class I Division/Zone 1 or 2 drying installations. It offers integrated com- puting as well as OPC and PLC I/O for auto- matic process communications control to en- able complete closed-loop monitoring. The analyzer has also been pre-configured to work effectively in hazardous or potentially explo- sive environments. The retractable fiber optics probes, also part of the dryer analytics sys- tem, are particularly suited to pharmaceutical powder drying applications. They feature pneumatic probe insertion and retraction, au- tomatic purge or wipe cleaning of the sam- pling window, and a wash chamber to clean hazardous materials without human exposure. Due to these features, the probes effectively address and eliminate the usual interfacing and sampling challenges occurring in today’s drying processes. The Thermo Scientific NIR- dryer analytics system is supported by a com- prehensive training and maintenance pro- gram, with easy-to-use validation protocols and reduced costs of calibration. coating protects diamond turned optics fromscratches and corrosion, overcoming a weak-ness with these delicate metallic surfaces. These proprietary coatings offer high perfor-mance in visible and infrared wavelengths si-multaneously and are the ideal choice forhighest reflectivity from 500 nm to 2 m. Theperformance can easily be extended out to 20m and beyond. The longevity of the silvermirror is maximized by the precise depositionof proprietary binder layers and dielectricovercoat layers carefully selected based onsubstrate choice and end-user application. This process provides the mirrors with uniquelong life and allows them to be cleaned at thepoint of use, even in the harshest environ-ments. APEX DUO, For Small MoleculeX-ray Crystallography

Bruker AXS announces the launch of theAPEX DUO, the first single crystal diffrac-tometer to feature instantaneous and auto-mated X-ray wavelength change. The APEXDUO combines a molybdenum (Mo) sealedtube as well as a high-intensity, air-cooledcopper (Cu) micro-focus tube with the mostsensitive CCD detector available. This uniquecombination of a micro-focus source with astandard sealed tube allows operation of bothX-ray sources without any change-over, with

typically one source in operation and the otherin standby. This novel approach allows instan-taneous, unattended switching of wavelengthswithout any of the source cold starts of first-generation dual wavelength systems thatcould lead to reduced tube lifetimes. In addi-tion, the advanced Cu micro-focus source de-livers up to twice the intensity of standard Cusealed tubes, allowing faster experiments andbetter data quality. The APEX DUO’s intelli-gent software allows the user to set up com-bined experiments for successive data collec-tions using both Cu and Mo wavelengths in asingle experiment. The software automaticallychanges wavelength and also reconfiguresthe instrument configuration from one wave-length to the other without any user interven-tion. For example, one can acquire Gandolphiimages using Cu radiation and then solve thestructure using Mo radiation. compact and unique mill with an integral liquidnitrogen reservoir, programmable touchscreen controls, and multiple user memorysettings. Various tubes can be used, includingmicro vials for very small volumes (e.g., onehair). These Freezer Mills have been recog-nized as the world’s most effective laboratorymill or the ‘‘mill of last resort’’ for many nor-mally impossible-to-grind samples such asplastics, rubbers, polymers, and volatile com-pounds. It is particularly well suited to DNA/RNA extraction, pharmaceutical analyses, drug testing, and medical research. New AQUACOUNTER KarlFischer Volumetric Titrator

JM Science announces their new AQUA-COUNTER Karl Fischer Volumetric Titrator(AQV-2100S), which has a wide detectionrange from 100 ppm to 100%. With its maxi-mum capability for automation and future abil-ity to be upgraded, the AQV-2100S is a goodchoice for any lab. A large color LCD screenprovides all the information that the analyst re-quires. For instance, real-time titration curvescan offer some assistance when developingnew methods. Its automatic background com-pensation function allows accurate volumetric

measurements of trace moisture levels. TheAQV-2100S can also be converted to either atwo-channel volumetric-volumetric titrator or atwo-channel volumetric-coulometric titrator. The volumetric conversion allows the use oftwo different strength titrants for maximum an-alytical flexibility. The GLP-compliant instru-mentation validation functions provide impor-tant information such as the life of reagents, the life of electrodes, etc. An FDA 21 CFR part11 compliant software package is also avail-able. Alumina Coated EvaporationBaskets

A line of alumina coated tungsten evapo-ration baskets used for the complete upwardevaporation of metallic powders such as gold, nickel, palladium, and silver is available fromCeramic Coating, Inc. CCI Alumina CoatedEvaporation Baskets are internally heated cru-cibles that permit the vacuum evaporation ofseveral metals simultaneously and maintainmolten metal evaporants as an induction pro-pelled spinning ball within the cavity. De-signed to promote efficient line-of-sight coat-ing, these evaporation baskets are highly di-rectional and completely evaporate most ma-terials such as gold, nickel, palladium, andsilver without loss to the chamber. Availablein six sizes with wire diameters from .020 in.to .050 in., inside depths from .225 in. to .975in., and top inner diameters from .150 in. to.900 in., CCI Alumina Coated EvaporationBaskets can be matched to user requirementsto reduce power consumption and preciousmetal costs. Ideally suited for research appli-
