Beverly Ruehs—A person of many talents

When she isn’t volunteering here at the Cen-

tre, she is just as busy volunteering with the

Church and doing things around home. She

is an avid baker and is known

for her delicious creations—

Just ask Harvey!

Over the years, she worked

hard on the farm, as well as

doing the book keeping for

their businesses in Lake Val-

ley, Brownlee, Eyebrow &

Grayburn. She even found

time to be a school bus driver

for a number of years!

Thank you to Beverly for her

many years of volunteer ser-

vice here at MJDS. You are

one of the people who make this place a

great place to come!

When you ask Beverly Ruehs, she mod-

estly says, “Oh I don’t do much”. Then

she goes on to tell you how she volunteers

at Banquets, birthday/

anniversary parties, spe-

cial events, Fowl Sup-

pers, etc. AND she volun-

teers every Thursday af-

ternoon in the kitchen.

She is also there to sell

tickets whenever we need

it, help with dances, and

even says grace from

time to time.

Beverly doesn’t recall ex-

actly when she joined the

MJDS, but she remem-

bers that she started to

volunteer on Thursday

afternoons when the Choir practices

moved to the afternoons.

**NEW** CHEN TAI CHI CLASS TO START IN SEPTEMBER

We are excited to announce that starting September 6, 2017, Betty Michalski will be offering a Tai Chi class Wednesday mornings. She will be teaching the Chen style of Tai Chi.

What is Tai Chi? Tai Chi is the art of embracing the mind,

body and spirit.. Tai Chi is the most effective exercise for

health of mind and body. There are many styles and forms of tai

chi.. The flowing movements of Tai Chi con-

tain much inner strength like water flowing in a river, beneath the tranquil

surface there is immense power, the power for healing and wellness.

With consistent practice, people are able to feel the external energy, fitness, agility and balance will improve.

Studies have shown that Tai Chi im-

proves muscular strength, flexibility, re-lieves pain and improves quality of life (i.e., reduces stress, improves sleep)

Tai Chi refers to the philosophy of the forces of Yin and Yang related to the moves.

The movements of the form helps to bring about a state of mental calm and clarity.

It stimulates the flow of vital energy known as “Chi”.

Chen Tai Chi has about 20 movements. Enhances control instability

The Yin Yang is an ancient Chinese symbol that has significant meaning about the uni-

verse. This popular black and white symbol essentially represents that there are two

forces in the universe that are constantly opposing each other, yet at the same time

are complementary together.

Leslie Metheral joined the MJDS in

2000, and it was no time at all be-

fore she was actively volunteering

at the Centre. She has done a vari-

ety of volunteer jobs in the last 17

years. She spent 6 years as a board

member, volunteered in the kitch-

en for a couple of years, worked

at the front desk and helped

out with banquets. Most re-

cently she has taken over the

role of sending cards to people

who are sick or in hospital as

well as sympathy cards to the

family of members who have

passed away. Leslie wants

members to let her know if they

know of a member who is sick

or in hospital so she can send a

card. She also volunteers 2 days a

week at the hospital, so always

tries to make time for a visit when

she delivers the card.

When asked what brought her

here, Leslie says, “for something to

do.” She used to spend a lot of

time volunteering with Ruby Jack-

son and they did lots together.

Leslie has children in both ends of

the country. One in Vancouver,

one in Saskatoon and one in Mon-

treal. So, she spends a lot of time

traveling to visit them.

One fond memory she has of the

Centre was the year she road on

the parade float. It was sooooo

cold! The ladies were in long skirts

plus they had blankets under

their skirts to keep warm. She

also recalls putting together a

quilt and quilting it with the

other ladies. It was then auc-

tioned off as a fundraiser.

Volunteers are the heart of the

Moose Jaw & District Seniors.

Without them, we wouldn’t

exist. Thank you to Leslie for all

you have done the past 17

years!

AUGUST MENU

A big thank you goes out to Grace Sorenson for helping out in the kitchen for the past few

weeks. Everyone has enjoyed her delicious baking!

Thank you also goes out to Tina and Barb for all the extra hard work they have done during

Sidewalk Days and during the Shuffleboard Tournaments to keep the kitchen working

smoothly.

Welcome to Dave! Dave is our newest employee in the kitchen. He will be filling in while

Helen continues to recuperate.

Café News

Your help is needed in the Kitchen! One of the ways we keep costs

down is by running the kitchen with volunteers in the afternoons.

Lately however, we are finding we are getting short of volunteer help

in the kitchens from 2:00-4:00 p.m. during the week.

If you are available for a couple of hours once a week, WE NEED YOU!

Please see Lori in the Office if you are able to help. Thanks!
