Proxim Technologies
Proxim SmartConnect™
Next generation improvements that anticipates
disturbance to optimize performance
Smart antenna that steers itself toward
the remote end to limit interferences
from nearby RF sourcesBy improving the radio SNR, smart antenna
allows to use higher modulation and thus
improves throughput
Scan radio that performs background
analysis of the full RF spectrum and
create channel availability table to
immediately switch to a free channel
in case of weather radar detection or
heavy interferenceBy cancelling the initial transmission delay,
scan radio makes DFS channel more appealing.
It opens access to the 5.600–5.650 GHz sub-band,
and enables effective use of up to 355 MHz of
DFS spectrum

Tsunami WORP® or Wi-Fi®
Due to Wi-Fi device lower cost, it is tempting to use standard Access
Point
with WDS or Mesh for outdoor point to multipoint connectivity
However, only WORP is really adapted for last miles operation.WORP Wi-Fi
Network Control Base Station scheduled polling:
Solves hidden node issue
created by the use of directional
antennas (in order to achieve
long range)
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with
Collision Avoidance (CSMA-CA):
Effective only if all devices hear
each other (very short range)
Scalability High: Hundred clients per BS
without performance impact
Poor: Performance degradation
above ten clients per AP
Efficiency From 75 to 90 % Typically 50%
QoS Service flow based with
guaranteed delivery (CIR, MIR,
latency, jitter…):
Ensure delivery whatever the
traffic
Enhanced Distributed Channel
Access: Not effective under load
especially for voice or video
Multicast Supported at full modulation Transmit in low modulation
or split into multiple unicast
Interoperability With Tsunami only With all Wi-Fi certified device:

Tsunami WORP® or LTE™
With the growing adoption of LTE and LTE Advanced
technology, temptation is great to use LTE solution for fixed application
Relay Node deployment for backhaul
4G indoor/outdoor router for last mile access
However even if it looks like a good and cheap solution it may not be
the best move for your company:
LTE is designed for mobile application Based on FDD with larger bandwidth DL than UL, LTE does not match backhaul
needs
Tsunami using WORP is flexible and dynamically adapt itself to the network
requirement
LTE is not designed to operate in license free bandLTE-U (Unlicensed) generates high interferences for nearby Wi-Fi devices
3GPP r13 LTE-LLA (License Assisted Access) solves Wi-Fi coexistence issue.
However the added Listen Before Talk (LTB) mechanism impacts performances
and does not solve the hidden node problem.
Tsunami using WORP polling mechanism is immune to hidden node effects.
Moreover, with 75% efficiency it delivers more bits per hertzChannel Size Max data rateMax

Tsunami WORP® or LTE™
Using LTE band for last mile access, operator looses 75% of its revenue
compared to Mobile usage
Use expensive licensed spectrum for maximum revenue generation

or last miles access business case for operators

Advanced Controller
ProximVision advanced v2.0.1 and ORiNOCO AP-9100 / AP-9100R
latest firmware provide Advanced Controller features:
Layer 2 and Layer 3 Discovery
Takes advantage of DHCP option to provision
PV advanced IP address into APs
Access Point RF Management
APs set themselves on the same channel
to collect each others RF information
PV Advanced collects data to calculate
each APs optimum channel
PV Advanced configures each AP with
determined parameters
Device Positioning
Clients position is calculated based on AP report
Clients are color coded based on RSSI
AP are color coded based on load
Clicking on one AP/Client shows associated devices
One moving client can be tracked on the map

Advanced Controller
Load Balancing
When deploying a large network with overlapping Access Points,
most clients tend to connect to the same AP even if a neighbor
AP has less traffic.Load Balancing redirects clients toward lower traffic AP.
PV Advanced keeps track of AP load (last minute air time level)Upon association, new clients are disassociated if AP is overloaded
During operation, half the clients are disassociated if AP is overloaded
Band Steering
When using dual radio Access Point, most clients tend to connect
to the 2.4 GHz radio even if they are capable of using 5 GHz frequencyBand Steering enabled APs ensure clients are evenly distributed between
the two radios
PV Advanced keeps track of 5 GHz capable clientsUpon association, 5 GHz capable clients trying to
connect to 2.4 GHz radio are disassociated
Modern client devices avoid sending association
request to AP that just disassociates this client.

Fast Roaming
Fast Roaming improves the roaming performance of Wi-Fi
clients by reducing the time taken to roam between APs
Fast Roaming in Proxim APs is based on two independent
and complementary features
Fast BSS Transition (802.11r) – Two variants:
Over-the-Air Fast Transition
Over-the-DS Fast Transition

FastConnect
Not all mobility project requires constant connection
A train or bus may need connectivity only while reaching stations
FastConnect™ SU Nomadicity
enables a mobile SU to moves
from one BSU to the next
when there is coverage
discontinuation between BSUs.
It does not preserve the
established layer-2 connection
to the backbone network due
to coverage holes.
It uses SNR variation
(instead of level like mobility)
to determine when to switch.
