Families & Friends,

We have wrapped up our Catholic Schools Week in grand style! I’m so proud of all of our students for coming together on teams

and working towards a common purpose. The teamwork and leadership that all students showed was simple heartwarming.

Now that February is flying by, it is time to look ahead. Registration for the 2018-2019 School Year is now open. As always, we

are asking parents to re-register by March 31 and to be sure that the public school district in which you reside in knows that you

are registered here. I continue to be thankful for our Parish Finance team that understands the importance of Catholic education

and continues to keep our tuition low. The Bison Fund is open at this time for new families to apply or re-apply. Financial

assistance is always available for those that need help. Please call the office or the rectory to learn more!

This Friday, February 10, is Mrs. Teibel’s last day in the office. I know that she will be missed. Please keep her in your prayers

as she begins a new journey. Mrs. Debbie Joseph will be in the office through the remainder of the year. Her email address is:

What’s New At The Q?

Pre-K News

Pre-K is continuing to have fun with our snow themed projects. We recently worked on a writing and art project about what

would cause snowmen to melt. We used puffy paint to make pictures of our snowmen. It has been fun learning about how water

can be a liquid, solid, or gas. We are now more than halfway through the alphabet as we continue to learn a new letter each

week. We have also read over one hundred books so far this year, and are quickly approaching our 100th day of school!

Kindergarten News

Kindergarten continues to work very hard in Guided Reading Groups enjoying our stories while working on vocabulary,

comprehension, identifying main idea, and details. In ELA, we are reading Big Books and Read Aloud stories that are realistic

fiction, learning about animals and how they communicate. In Religion, we are learning about how Jesus is our loving friend and

how he helped many people. In Math, we are practicing addition, and are now adding with the plus and equal sign! We look forward to all of the activities with our friends at Queen of Heaven-we know we come to a wonderful school every

Second Grade News

Our second graders have been busy this January writing about their goals and resolutions for 2018. We are practicing addition

and subtraction with regrouping and are learning about place value in math. In science we are learning about winter weather,

freezing temperatures, blizzards and snowstorms. We have a few budding meteorologists in second grade! In social studies we

are learning about urban, suburban and rural communities. During religion class, we are learning about reconciliation. We are

excited to be celebrating 100th day celebration in February with kindergarten and first grade.~Mrs. Vile & Miss Ode

Third Grade News

In ELA the students are using close reading strategies to help them analyze a new text and use these skills to answer questions

pertaining to the story. The students will also be starting to research African Americans who have made an impact on the United

States. In Science we are finishing up our Chapter on how animals can be classified. The students will show what they have

learned about Vertebrates and Invertebrates. In Religion we have been learning about the Sacraments of Healing, Anointing of

the Sick and Reconciliation. The students are deepening their understanding of the types of sin. In Math we are practicing our

multiplication facts to build fluency and accuracy. We have learned how to make possible combinations and relate them to

multiplication. In Social Studies we have completed lapbooks about urban, suburban, and rural communities. Next we will be

discussing different cultures of the people in the United States and the ideals that make us one nation. Happy 60th birthday,

First Grade News

Happy February! In ELA, our first graders have been working on digraphs and making text-to-self connections. In math, we

will be continuing to work on time to the hour and half hour. In religion, we will be discussing the Saints. Our Valentine’s Day

party will be on Tuesday, February 13th after lunch. We have many fun activities planned for the 100th day of school on

Thursday, February 15th. We look forward to seeing the students’ completed 100th day t-shirts.

Fourth Grade News

Our fourth graders have been working hard in Religion class in preparation for Catholic Schools week. They worked in small

groups to write stories called “If You Give A Kid A Catholic Education”. In Reading, we just finished reading an informational

text about movie making and special effects. The students really enjoyed it and learned a lot about all of the work it is to make a

film! We are also working on our first book report which is an interactive lapbook! I can't wait to see the finished products! In

Science, we are beginning to wrap up our Plant and Animal Classification chapter. We will be playing some review games this

week and taking our test at the end of the week. We finally finished up our division chapter and everyone did a great job! I know

it was a little difficult at first, but we ended the chapter wonderfully! We are going to be starting fractions this month. I know

everyone will do just as well with fractions as we did with division. In Social Studies we have finished our Revolutionary War

chapter with our fantastic posters we created last week in class. We will be moving on through history with learning about the

early history of New York becoming a state. The 2018 Winter Olympics are quickly approaching and students will be working in

writing a report after researching an Olympic athlete. We will also be tracking the medals won by the USA as well as other

Classroom Happenings

MIDDLE SCHOOL

5th Grade Social Studies & Science: The fifth graders are starting a google slide presentation on an early explorer of the

Western Hemisphere as we begin to talk about the early settlers. Students finished learning about the physical structures of

plants, animals, and insects. We are now moving into the human body systems. We will be learning about how the circulatory

system keeps helps to fuel our body.~Mrs. Boyd

5TH Grade Math: We are right in the middle of our Multiplication and Division of Decimal chapter. We have been focusing on

multiplication so far but will soon be moving into the division. Practice your multiplication facts and it will always help. ~Ms. Dowell

6th Grade Math: The pride and energy here at Queen of Heaven is truly amazing to be a part of. These boys and girls are lucky

to have this fun week planned to celebrate Catholic Schools Week! In sixth grade math we continue to think! And we continue

with word problems and dividing fractions. ~Mrs. Manley 5TH /6TH ELA: Students are continuing to read their class novels. In 6th grade the students are studying the world of Greek

mythology, studying the archetype of a hero and following a hero’s journey. In 5th grade the students are determining man vs.

self and man vs. nature survival techniques. Both grades are strengthening their writing skills by writing beautiful persuasive

writing pieces and chapter books. The 5th grade students participated in a nationwide writing contest and I am so proud to

announce that all 31 5th grade students were chosen to be published! The students were to make mini sagas about a new monster

that they created. They really let their imaginations run wild and I am so happy to report that others saw the value in their work! ~Mrs. Wagner

7th/8th ELA: Happy Catholic Schools Week! This week in ELA the 8th graders are working on a reflective essay: Walking in

someone else’s shoes. This is based on the novel we have just finished To Kill a Mockingbird. The 7th graders will be working

on a magical realism writing assignment based on a Disney Pixar short film! Before the break, we will continue to work in our

Literature books on poetry then other genre’s such as fiction, non-fiction stories, personal essays, myths, tales, and legends.

~ Ms. LaMoy Middle School Science: Congratulations to Grace Russo, our Science Fair Grand Prize Winner! This 8th grader did a terrific

study of the effects of temperature on the brightness of luminol. Other winners were Luke Nowak, Leah Jurek, Shay Ciezki,

Megan Flanagan, Grace Kicinski, Leah Wierzbowski, Vincent Cercone, Maddie Haggerty, Sophia Violanti, Ryan Forsythe,

Griffin Regan, Charlie Kent, Anthony Rambino, Mary Molloy, Gabe Miller, Nick Siler. All students did a great job! In the 8th grade, students are learning about motion and will be moving on to forces next. The 7th graders have been watching

their seeds grow in crystal clay. They will be doing a lab with flowers next week. The 6th graders have been learning about what is on the inside of the Earth. We’ll see what’s shaking with earthquakes next chapter. ~Mrs. Whelan

Middle School Religion: Seventh Grade Religion have just begun doing oral presentations on Matrimonial customs and

traditions of other religions; we finish the Sacrament of Matrimony in the Roman Catholic faith. Students are seeing what an

interesting comparison our religion is with other religions. Sixth Grade will be learning about the rule of the kings in the Old

Testament. Eighth Grade is learning about the differences between the Church in the East and the Church in the West. ~Ms. Martina

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPANISH: The middle school is very busy in Spanish class. The 6th graders are busy practicing the verbs

gustar and querer. They are also working with verbs in their infinitive form. They are completing a verb video project. The 7th

graders are enjoying the cawwwpurrent unit on food as well as adding more stem-changing verbs to their repertoire. They are

working with partners on creating a menu. The 8th graders are finishing up their travel unit and enjoying reading their second

novel of the year. They are also working on a travel project. ~Ms. Ungaro

Specials ART:. It’s been a busy month in the art room. Students are hard at work finishing up projects for the art show. From

paintings to mixed media collage, it’s sure to be a colorful and fun expression of the talented QofH artists. We have also

begun working on additional artworks for the Sweepstakes Art Auction. There will be a variety of unique and beautiful

furniture, paintings, and more to bid on. Thank you again to all of the families who participated in the Square 1 Art fundraiser

during the holiday time. The fundraiser brought in enough funds to supply the art room with brand new classroom sets of

paint brushes, pencil sharpeners, scissors, paint, and specialty paper. The students are excited to work with all of the new

materials!~Mrs. Gulino

Library: I can’t believe February is upon us! I am working with the third through fifth graders on ELA assessment practice.

In second grade, we are still working on Tall Tales. In first grade, we are working hard on our writing. In Kindergarten, the

children are identifying and printing their sight words. ~Mrs. Harbridge

Technology: I can’t believe that January is coming to a close. There are a variety of activities happening in technology this

month. The seventh graders are working on designing and creating business cards in Microsoft Publisher. The fifth graders

are integrating math into technology while creating a Google drawing, in a project called “Figure Me Out”. In third grade, the

students are working on making notes during biography research. Second graders continue to impress me with their Google

skills, using both Google Classroom and Google Docs. Please stop by the technology room during Open House to see the

fourth graders completed makerspace projects! ~Mrs. Andros

AIS: During the AIS class periods, students are finishing up with their mid-year i-Ready online diagnostic reading

assessments. The results of these assessments will assist the teachers in determining what needs to be focused on

for reading instruction in Grades 2-5. Likewise, Kindergarten and Grade 1 students will soon be assessed again

with the ELP (Early Literacy Profile) beginning next week. Some concepts tested include letter recognition, letter

sound recognition, concepts about print, and sight word identification. These results give us insight into what

students need/ have already achieved in order to be successful in learning to read. ~Mrs. Wach

PE: In grades Prek-2nd: Spatial awareness activities are implemented through fleeing, dodging, and pursuing activities.

Students are working on manipulatives that involve using balls, sticks, pucks, etc. In Grades 3-5-Volleyball Unit- Skill

development focusing on: Forearm Pass, Set Pass, Serving, which is followed with “Game Play”. In Grades 6-8-Volleyball

Unit- That involves “Game Play” that re-enforces previously learned skills, such as passing, serving, and defending. Game

Play- for grades 3-8 consists of an A group, and a B group. The A group is a more experienced and more competitive students

for this particular sport. The B group is a less experienced and less competitive group for this particular sport. The goal is for

students to participate in an environment that matches their abilities. ~ Mr. Morgan

Mrs. Theresa Rooney

Mrs. Rooney has been teaching at QofH for 4 years. She loves the family environment at Queen of Heaven School,

especially when we celebrate happy occasions, pray every day, and how the community comes together when

someone is in need. Mrs. Rooney enjoys teaching her first grade students writing. In her spare time, Mrs.

Rooney is learning to sew and her main hobby is chasing after her foster child who turned a year this past summer. Did you know that Mrs.Scheiber was Mrs. Rooney’s 3rd

grade teacher in elementary school (Miss Clancy)?

TEACHERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Mrs. Lauren White

This is Mrs. White’s first year teaching at Queen of Heaven School. She loves the caring faculty,

students, and parents here at the Q. She enjoys teaching her 4th grade students Reading,

Science, and Religion, especially literature circles. In her spare time, Mrs. White enjoys photography,

baking/cooking, and blogging. Fun fact: Mrs. White always knew she wanted to be a teacher

and is still in contact with several of her elementary school teachers!

Mrs. Lynn Miller

Mrs. Miller has been teaching at Queen of Heaven School for 18 years. Her favorite thing about QofH is the students. She enjoys teaching her Pre-K students reading, science, math, and writing. As a teacher she loves seeing students

figure things out, especially the “I can!” and “I did it” moments. Outside of school, Mrs. Miller enjoys reading,

sewing, gardening, painting, hiking, and cooking. Did you know that Mrs. Miller can talk like Yoda?

Mrs. Donna Biggie

Mrs. Biggie has been teaching at Queen of Heaven for 26 years. She loves that QofH is a family! Mrs. Biggie teaches Spanish and Religion. In Spanish class, she enjoys teaching the students about the celebration of El Dia de Los Muertos. In Religion class, she is most thankful to share her faith with

her students. Outside of school, Mrs. Biggie likes to read, travel, and drive 4-wheelers! She especially enjoys spending time with my grandsons, Kayden

and Nathan.
