Rachmaninov’s third concerto is known as one of the most technically challenging pieces in the classical piano repertoire, so much so that the pianist for whom it was written, Josef Hofmann, despite being an extremely proficient player, denied that the work was written for him! The 1996 film, Shine, tells the true story of an Australian pianist’s plight in learning the piece. Tchaikovsky’s fourth symphony was written as his marriage was breaking down and he had tried to commit suicide. He is said to have been influenced by Beethoven’s Symphony No 5 and the ‘fate’ motif, saying of the opening movement “All life is an unbroken alternation of hard reality with swiftly passing dreams and visions of happiness... No haven exists... Drift upon that sea until it engulfs and submerges you in its depths.”Vocalise is the last song in Rachmaninov’s Fourteen Songs, composed in 1912. This wordless song was originally written for soprano and piano, to be sung on a vowel of the singer’s choosing. It has been arranged countless times since it was written, notably by American vocalist and conductor Bobby McFerrin and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Mozart composed his fifth and final violin concerto when he was just twenty one years old. It follows the typical fast-slow-fast musical structure, but surprises us with a thematic change to characteristically Turkish music in the finale movement, giving the concerto its nickname.Mahler’s sixth symphony was composed during a happy time in his life when he had recently married and started a family. However, towards the end of the work it becomes surprisingly dark and moody. Listen out for the final movement, which originally featured three hammer blows. Being deeply suspicious, Mahler removed the third after his eldest daughter died and he was diagnosed with a fatal heart condition.

Brahms was under immense pressure when he wrote his first symphony and he put it off for many years for fear of comparison to Beethoven. Despite his confession that it took 21 years to write, it didn’t take long for critics to draw similarities between Brahms’s First Symphony and Beethoven’s Ninth, an observation to which Brahms retorted, “any ass can see that!” and the work soon became known as ‘Beethoven’s Tenth’. The similarities are strongest in the final movements of both pieces, although during composition Brahms said he was thinking of John 14:10: “I am in the Father, and the Father is in me.”Ives’s The Unanswered Question was originally scored for woodwind quartet, solo trumpet and offstage string quartet, each working within their own time and key. Ives described this as a “cosmic landscape”. It was not until 1940 when Ives rewrote the piece for orchestra that it was eventually published. The piece is featured prominently in the German award-winning film Run Lola Run.

Elgar was inspired to compose In the South whilston a family holiday in Alassio in the south of Italy. It was premiered in 1904 as part of an Elgar Festival, conducted by Elgar himself as the score was not ready in time for conductor Hans Richter to study. Listen out for the viola solo in the middle and the brass-heavy finale. Dona nobis pacem (Grant us peace), was commissioned in 1936 for Huddersfield Choral Society. The six parts of the work, using text from poetry, the Mass, the Bible and a political speech are entitled Agnus Dei, Beat Beat Drums!, Reconciliation, Dirge for Two Veterans and two untitled final sections. Also influenced by war and poetry, Elgar wrote The Spirit of England to remember those who died during the first world war using text from three Laurence Binyon poems: The Fourth of August, To Women and For the Fallen. The work was premiered here in Leeds in 1916.

Ravel’s jazz-inspired Piano Concerto in G was written after a trip to America when jazz was at the height of its popularity. Back home in Paris the trend was also catching on at cafes across the city. Whilst the work still uses a classical structure, the harmonies and rhythms are clearly taken from jazz. Listen out for the opening whip crack and drum roll. “The G-major Concerto took two years of work… The opening theme came to me on a train between Oxford and London. But the initial idea is nothing. The work of chiseling then began.”Bruckner’s rarely performed sixth symphony was one of the only symphonies that he didn’t subject to many revisions. He was finally proud and confident of his work. Unfortunately the critics disagreed! In the second movement listen out for the opening love song of the strings and oboe, followed by a funeral march, and in the third movement, an Austrian folk dance style.

Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is known as the first of the Romantic period. Despite followingthe usual form of three movements, the concerto was unusual for its time as the movements are all linked together, in order to prevent the audience from applauding in the breaks. Whilst applause between movements was the practice previously, Mendelssohn’s concept became the norm. Listen out for the sustained bassoon note which links the first and second movements and the brief violin and strings passage which links the second and third.Dvorák’s Symphony No 9 is one of the most popular symphonies from the romantic repertoire, and is best known to many as the tune from the Hovis advert which featured the theme from the third movement. Dvorák wrote the piece to mark 400 years since Columbus’s discovery of America, but whilst he was influenced by African-American spirituals, a nostalgic sense of longing for his homeland can be sensed.

If you haven’t heard of Show of Hands by now, where have you been?! Celebrating a21 year musical partnership, singer songwriter Steve Knightley and multi instrumentalistPhil Beer have sold out the Royal Albert Hall four times and are triple winners at theBBC Radio 2 Folk Awards (Best Duo, Best Original Song, Best Live Act).

Joined by musical chameleon Miranda Sykes on double bass they have become one of the acoustic roots scene’s major players, widely recognised for their resonating original songs, slick musicianship and audience rapport – featuring on BBC TV’s Countryfile, BBC Breakfast and Andrew Marr shows and regularly played by the likes of Bob Harris, Mark Radcliffe and Simon Mayo.Following a summer of key UK festival headline appearances and a tour of Germany, the genre-defying band returns to the UK this autumn for the Hand in Hand tour – for the first time ever Steve, Phil and Miranda will be their own support act – performing three songs apiece in the opening set to showcase their myriad individual talents, before joining forces for the unique Show of Hands experience after the interval.

This evening we hear from two British composers as one of the UK’s most well-loved pianists performs Britten’s only piano concerto, which he premiered himself in 1938, followed by Elgar’s second, and last, symphony. Elgar dedicated his work to the late King Edward VII who had recently passed away and the second movement is a funeral march.Elgar instructed: “I want you to imagine a great crowd of silent people, watching the passing of a beloved sovereign. Strings, you must play those semiquaver figures of yours like the sigh of an immense crowd... Oboe, I want you to play your lament entirely free, with all the expression you can get into it...” Elgar said that he was inspired to write this movement following a visit to Venice and also by a Percy Shelley poem but another profound influence was his friendship with Alice Stuart Worley, with whom many believed he was in a romantic relationship.

Celebrate Christmas at Leeds Town Hall’s annual family carol concerts. After the concert there will be a collection for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal. The Lord Mayor’s chosen charity for 2013 – 2014 is a project called Leeds Offers Fun for the Young (LOFFTY). The proposal is to raise funds in order to provide additional fun activities for kids in the City during and after school, at weekends and throughout the school holidays. The charity Cash for Kids will manage the LOFFTY project. It’s the official charity of Radio Aire and Magic 828 and has provided support for thousands of the neediest children in Leeds.

Peter and his animal companions are brought to life before your ears by dancing strings, quacking oboes, fluttering flutes and prowling horns in Prokofiev’s charming tale of courage and compassion. With the enchanting animated film The Snowman shown on a big screen, orchestral forces inject tingle-down-the-spine magic into Walking in the Air – the soundtrack to every child’s Christmas. The perfect way to begin the exciting build-up to Christmas day.
