Baxter was delighted with the way the

past 14 months had turned out for Solar Star.

“You plan these things and when they come off you clap your hands a

little bit,” Baxter told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“I already had 20 per cent of her when she went into the ring and I

bought her outright. She always showed potential and she was always very

honest and I thought Queensland might be her spot.

“She did win at Moonee Valley one night and she won a couple of

other races for Anthony down there and when the syndicate decided to

sell her I bought her outright with the idea of racing her in Queensland. I

thought it was a bit weaker up there, particularly the sprint races over 1000

and 1200 metres.

“Tony seems to think that she’s just about at her distance now at 1350-

1400 (metres) even where the pace comes off and she can dictate a bit.”

While unclear how much the Gai Waterhouse Classic win has added

to Solar Star’s value, Baxter will be prepared to retain her if she does not

meet reserve.

“Tony’s speaking that way this morning saying ‘she’s never been better

than now’ and that she could race on, but he’s going to give her a spell

either way,” he said.

“We know what she’s about now and she’s so genuine and honest -

that is the thing about her - and she’s only a rising five-year-old so could

probably race on.

“That will all be determined by the bidding and I will race her on or

breed with her (if she doesn’t meet reserve).”

Solar Star, who was selected by BBA Ireland’s Adrian Nicoll at the 2017

New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale and made $190,000, will

be consigned by Milburn Creek as Lot 76 while the Southern Highlands

operation will also offer the Baxter-owned Arabian Beauty (Shamardal)

next week.

Catalogued as Lot 541, Arabian Beauty is being offered in foal to

Rubick (Encosta De Lago) while her first foal to race, the Toby and Trent

Edmonds-trained Farasan (Sebring), finished third in a hot Sunshine

Coast maiden yesterday.

The above average two-year-old

fillies maiden was taken out by the highly rated Gollan-trained Bleu

Zebra (I Am Invincible) while Winning Rupert’s (Written Tycoon)

sister Tycoon Evie was runner-up at her first start.

“We had Arabian Beauty with Peter Moody and when she finished

racing I bought her outright as I had the mother of her (Marchelle

Belle) and her grandmother Life Goes On Oh,” he said.

Baxter, who sold his stud farm Ruane at Menangle and dispersed

his broodmare band and stock numbering about 80 about five years

ago, now has six broodmares and shares in a few racehorses as a hobby.

Despite his industry involvement being on a much smaller scale,

the former winemaker continues to enjoy success in the sales ring and

on the track

He races the talented Gerald Ryan-trained three times stakes-

placed rising three-year-old filly Time Is Precious (Snitzel) as well as

retaining a 20 per cent share in the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained

Argenteus (Written Tycoon), a colt he bred and sold at last year’s

Magic Millions sale for $900,000 to the James Harron Bloodstock colts

syndicate.

Argenteus ran third in a Randwick barrier trial on July 10 in an

effort that has Baxter excited about the spring.

“He’s a two-year-old by Written Tycoon out of one of my mares

called Golden Penny,” he said.

“He’s a beautiful horse who trialled the other day and he will trial

again this week with the idea of the spring races for him.”

AUSTRALIA

14 for Pride Of DubaiCoolmore’s leading first season sire by earnings

Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) landed his 14th

winner and 11th in Australia when Diesel ‘N’

Dust (2 g ex Mooshakissa by Duporth) took

out an 1100-metre open maiden at Wodonga

yesterday. Trained by Jason Warren, the gelding

won by a comfortable margin of three and three-

quarter lengths ahead of Clinched (Dundeel)

in second with Jet Jackson (Smart Missile) a

further three-quarters of a length back in third.

Purchased by his trainer for $15,000 at the Magic

Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Diesel ‘N’

Dust is the only named foal out of Mooshakissa

(Duporth) who herself is a half-sister to Group

3 winner Broadband (Sebring). Further back,

this is the family of dual New Zealand Group

1 scorer Yourdeel (Dundeel). Pride Of Dubai

stands at Coolmore’s Jerrys Plains for a fee of

$38,500 (inc GST) in 2020.

Smith stablemates set for Caulfield clashMystery Shot (Shooting To Win) will put his

unbeaten record to the test at Caulfield on

Saturday in a race where one of his stablemates

looks like being his toughest challenge. The

gelding will be attempting to make it five wins

from five starts when he runs in a three-year-old

handicap over 1400 metres, where he is due to

clash with Group 2-winning stablemate Adelaide

Ace (Savabeel). "He’ll race next week at Caulfield

and he’ll go against the stablemate Adelaide Ace

so that will be a test," trainer Lindsey Smith told

Racing.com. "He’s (Adelaide Ace) only a plain

horse but he goes good and he’ll prove a good test

for Mystery Shot. I am only the trainer so as long

as one of them wins, I’ll be happy."

Portelli hoping to Reign in July SprintGary Portelli remains convinced Time To Reign

(Time For War) can turn around an inglorious

first-up performance and put his racing career

back on track. A stakes-winning two-year-old

and half-brother to Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr

1, 1200m)-winning stablemate She Will Reign

(Manhattan Rain), Time To Reign has competed

just twice since finishing fifth in the 2019

Golden Slipper. His most recent appearance

at Rosehill last month was forgettable when

Glen Boss was caught back and wide off a slow

speed and Time To Reign travelled fiercely

before trailing home behind the field. "He was

in no-man's land, there was nothing he could

do," Portelli said. "The horse basically went

through the first 600 on one breath and by the

time he straightened up he was a spent force.”

Time To Reign will be given the chance to justify

his trainer's faith when he steps out in the July

Sprint (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Behemoth to target Melbourne Group 1sAdelaide trainer David Jolly believes

Behemoth (All Too Hard) can mix it with

the best Australia has to offer and will target

last year’s Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-

up at the Melbourne Group 1s this spring.

"He has probably been a bit unlucky in both

Goodwoods," Jolly said. "He's one of those

horses who probably races better back off them

with a bit of cover and The Goodwood is one of

those races you have got to have a lot of luck

in. Both editions he probably hasn't had an

enormous amount of luck but he's obviously

been competitive in those high-grade races.

We're thinking those bigger style of handicaps

over 1400 metres to a mile over the spring will

be suitable for him. I'm sure there's a big win

in him, he's probably just one of those horses

that needs a bit of luck in his races."

Caulfield Cup aim for Nonconformist

Grahame Begg is planning to kick-off Caulfield

Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) hopeful Nonconformist's

(Rebel Raider) preparation on the Memsie

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) program, but it is unlikely

to be in the main event. Begg has high hopes

for the lightly-raced rising four-year-old this

spring and has pinpointed the $5 million

Caulfield Cup in October as his major target.

"He's going to be the flagship horse for us for

the spring," Begg said. "We'd like to think that

hopefully he measures up into the Caulfield

Cup. Obviously there's a huge transition from

running against three-year-olds at set weights

in the Alister Clark that he won, but he won

in pretty devastating style that night and we

think he's certainly got the talent to be able to

measure up. He's been pretty lightly-raced and

been looked after so we're very excited about

his prospects going forward."

Tough induction for new Lindsay Park teamLindsay Park’s Tom Dabernig, who has taken the

lead with co-trainer Ben Hayes following David

Hayes’ move to Hong Kong, says the prominent

stable is remaining vigilant as Victoria battles a

spike in coronavirus cases. Dabernig is remaining

at the Euroa base of Lindsay Park, while Ben

Hayes is overseeing the Flemington stable. "We've

got a morning and an afternoon team here at

Euroa and everyone has to take their temperature

before they enter into work," Dabernig said. "If

anyone does show symptoms of a high temp or

is feeling unwell they don't come to work, they

go and get tested as a precautionary measure and

we ask them to get a doctor's certificate before

they come back. We're probably lucky that we are

out in the open and the social distancing is quite

easy to practise although the office space is a little

more congested and there are some working from

home."

Godolphin to trial spring hopes at HawkesburyA winter barrier trial session at Hawkesbury

this morning will have an air of spring about it

with a string of Godolphin carnival contenders

to have hit-outs. Godolphin Australia’s head

trainer James Cummings will unveil Australian

Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Colette (Hallowed

Crown), Group 1 scorer Flit (Medaglia d’Oro)

while stablemate Avilius (Pivotal) will also be

seen in public for the first time this campaign.

Colette is entered in heat seven over 800 metres

while Flit will appear in the following heat over

the same distance while Avilius is in heat nine,

also over 800 metres. Click here to view the

Hawkesbury barrier trial acceptances.

Pike closing in on recordWilliam Pike edged closer to beating his own

Australian record for riding most winners in

a season when he completed a five-timer at

Belmont on Saturday. Last season, Pike’s 234

winners bested the previous record of Allan

Robinson (223.5 wins) in 2005/06 and his five

on Saturday brought him to within three of

matching that mark with eight meetings in WA

still to take place before the end of the season

on July 31. Such is his popularity with punters,

all of Pike’s winners on Saturday were sent off

favourites with his latest haul taking him to 226,

well clear of second-placed Blaike McDougall

on 139.5 wins.

Stackhouse takes Vic Premiership leadDaniel Stackhouse took a narrow lead in the

Victorian Jockey Premiership with victory

aboard Set Us Free (Shocking) at Wodonga

yesterday. Stackhouse moved onto the 132

mark, one ahead of long-time leader Jye

McNeil, who finished second on his only ride

of the day. McNeil will get the chance to regain

the lead with 11 rides across the meetings at

Ballarat and Pakenham today and tomorrow.

NEW ZEALAND

Gift horse takes out cupThe well-travelled My Gift (Notnowcato) bounced

back to winning form on his favourite track

when he dominated his rivals over the closing

stages of Saturday’s feature race at Awapuni, the

Rangitikei Gold Cup (2100m). The rising eight-

year-old won his first three races in Europe before

an unsuccessful 19-race stint in Hong Kong was

ended when he was sent back to New Zealand

and the care of Te Aroha trainer Gary Hennessy.

Hennessy offered My Gift to owner-trainer John

Mason and the horse has since gone on to win

another seven races. “He’s a pretty good horse

and probably right up to the best around,” Mason

said. “Like a lot of those horses that come back

from Hong Kong it’s a matter of keeping them

from reverting to any bad habits they might have

picked up and we’ve managed to do that with this

guy. He normally takes a couple of starts to get

race fit and that was his third run on Saturday so I

thought he was thereabouts.”

Four-timer for RaeRiccarton trainer Terri Rae made her way to

Timaru yesterday with high hopes of a good

showing from her eight-strong team but even she

was blown away by the day’s final winning tally.

Victories for Paint Me Red (Battle Paint), Scarfi

(Makfi), Hatrick Boys (Makfi) and Newmarket

(Reliable Man) gave Rae a winning quartet in

partnership with National Jockeys’ premiership

leader Lisa Allpress, who was aboard all four

successful runners. Rae was beaming as she

made her way back to Christchurch, although

she admitted her confidence took a knock when

race favourite Razor (Roc De Cambes) was beaten

into second in the first race on the card. “I knew

the team was well so I thought I might be able to

win three, but when Razor got beaten in the first, I

started to have second thoughts,” Rae said. “Paint

Me Red did win nicely in race two though and that

got us on a roll, but to win four was an unexpected

but really special result for the day.”

Allpress certain to take jockeys’ titleTAB bookmakers have put up the white flag

and are paying out on Lisa Allpress winning the

National Jockeys’ premiership. A double aboard

Happy Star (Fabulous) and Penelope Cruise

(Ocean Park) at Awapuni on Saturday put her 12

wins clear of nearest rival Kozzi Asano with just

two weeks and seven meetings left in a season

tipped upside down by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Allpress, who went on to ride four winners at

Timaru yesterday, is delighted to sit atop the

premiership once again, the fourth time in a

career that began back in the 1995/96 season

when she started an apprenticeship with master

trainer Kevin Gray. “It’s one of those things that

wasn’t in the plan at the start of the season,” she

said. “I just kept whacking away and managed to

get on some nice horses that kept winning.”

ASIA

19 for FoxwedgeWoodside Park resident Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock)

sired his 19th individual stakes winner when

Sacred Magnate (4 g ex Ekali by Torrential) took

out yesterday’s Macau Derby (Listed, 1800m) at

Taipa. The four-year-old gelding edged out Star

Of Yiu Cheung (Casino Prince) by a head with

Hostwin Epanoui (More Than Ready) three-

quarters of a length away in third. Originally

purchased by Malua Bloodstock for $155,000 at the

2017 Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Sacred Magnate is

a half-brother to stakes placegetters Windjammer

(Bernardini) and Mediterranean (Smart Missile).

Further down the page is champion two-year-

old Capitalist (Written Tycoon) and Group 1

winner Dear Demi (Dehere). Foxwedge stands at

80 for Hard SpunFormer Darley shuttler Hard Spun (Danzig)

sired his 80th individual stakes winner when

Meikei Die Hard (5 h ex Meikei Sophia by King

Kamehameha) turned the form book on its

head to take out the Toyota Sho Chukyo Kinen

(Gr 3, 1600m) on the Hanshin turf yesterday.

The Kazuya Nakatake-trained five-year-old had

failed to make the frame on his five previous

starts in stakes company and was sent off a

162-1 chance as he came out on top in a tight

finish which saw three necks separate the first

four home. Russet (Monterosso) filled second

spot and Entscheiden (Deep Impact) third,

while favourite Gilded Mirror (Orfevre) could

only manage sixth in the 18-strong field. Hard

Spun stood at Darley’s Kentucky base for a fee

of US$40,000 in 2020.

Five for Just A WayTriple Grade 1 winner Just A Way (Heart’s Cry)

sired his fifth individual stakes winner when

Admire Justa (4 c ex Admire Teresa by Helissio)

finally made the breakthrough in black type

company at the 11th attempt when taking out

yesterday’s Hakodate Kinen (Gr 3, 2000m). The

Naosuke Sugai-trained four-year-old, who has

been highly-tried throughout his career, beat

Duomo (Deep Impact) by a length and a half,

with Bio Spark (Orfevre) just another neck away

in third. Just A Way stood for a fee of ¥4,000,000

at Shadai Stallion Station in 2020.

INTERNATIONAL

Six for TerritoriesDarley shuttler Territories (Invincible Spirit)

sired his sixth first-crop winner as Royal

Scimitar (2 c ex Prequel by Dark Angel) took

out the EBF Novice Stakes (6f) at Newbury

yesterday. The Clive Cox-trained colt defeated

Line Of Departure (Mehmas) by a neck with

Aesthete (Muhaarar) a head away in third.

Purchased by his trainer for 80,000gns at Book

2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale,

Royal Scimitar is the only named foal out of

the unraced mare Prequel (Dark Angel) who

herself is a sister to Group 2 winner Alhebayeb.

Group 1 winner Territories stands at Darley’s

Kelvinside property in the Hunter Valley for a

fee of $11,000 (inc GST) in 2020.

71 for Lope De VegaBallylinch Stud stalwart Lope De Vega

(Shamadal) sired his 71st individual stakes

winner when Surf Dancer (3 c ex Beach

Belle by Invincible Spirit) downed his better

fancied rivals to score in the King Charles II

Stakes (Listed, 7f) at York yesterday. Now the

winner of three of his seven starts, the William

Haggas-trained three-year-old, who is owned

in partnership by the China Horse Club and

Ballylinch Stud, struck at odds of 9-1 under

Ryan Moore. Boccaccio (Dubawi) finished two

and three-quarter lengths behind in second,

with Lincoln Bright (Lope De Vega) a further

half-length back in third. The former shuttler

stood for a career high €100,000 in 2020.

Jo Jo swoops late for last-gasp winQueen Jo Jo (Gregorian) came from a

seemingly impossible position to gun down

Breathtaking Look (Bated Breath) in the final

strides and post the most unlikely of victories

in the Summer Fillies’ Stakes (Gr 3, 6f ) at York

yesterday. With all the action taking place on

the far side, Queen Jo Jo was in last place and

looking a forlorn hope for much of the race,

before passing all of her 17 rivals in a late

flourish down the stands’s rail on her way to

posting a neck win. Having shown little in her

most recent outing at the Curragh, the Kevin

Ryan-trained four-year-old was sent off a 25-1

chance to register what was her third win

in ten starts, and a second success in stakes

company. Sunday Star (Kodiac) was another

who was doing her best work late on, crossing

the line two lengths behind the winner in third.

Steventon success for Global GiantGlobal Giant (Shamardal) recorded the second

Listed success of his career in yesterday’s

Steventon Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f ) at Newbury.

Making his third start since changing

ownership and switching from Ed Dunlop to

John Gosden, the five-year-old was recording

his fourth victory from 15 starts, his previous

best coming in the 2018 Carlingford Stakes

(Listed, 1m 2.5f ) at Dundalk back in 2018. Sent

off as favourite, Global Giant took it up two

furlongs from home and saw off the challenge

of Extra Elusive (Mastercraftsman) to win by a

length, while there was the same distance back

to Pablo Escobarr (Galileo) in third.

14 for StarspangledbannerFollowing up her maiden victory at

Bellewstown at the start of the month, Aloha

Star (2 f ex Zain Art by Excellent Art) stepped

up to stakes company for the first time on her

fourth start and outran her odds of 33-1 to

take out the Airlie Stud Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at the

Curragh. The Fozzy Stack-trained juvenile got

up close home to beat the favourite Frenetic

how he runs this year and I'll talk to the boss

(Sheikh Mohammed)."No Nay Never COOLMORE
