From the Editor Dear PACC Member,

Your new Peace Arch Curling Club Executive has been chosen.

Our long standing President, Ross Scott, is now Past-President, Jennifer MacArthur is Secretary, Susan Loken is our new Vice-President, and Marjorie Mooney is our new President.

Your new Board of Directors consists of the following members:

Marjorie Mooney , Susan Loken, Jennifer MacArthur, Ross Scott, John Bogar, Stan Turner, Terry Peel, John Newbury, Simon Potts, Bryan Jensen, and Kent Bird.

Please congratulate all of them for stepping up to take on the challenges at hand to support and promote your curling club.

The Board is hard at work to make the club more efficient, more cost effective, and ensure that PACC is around for years to come. And that’s where you come in.

Peace Arch Curling Club needs you. The club is desperately searching for

someone to take on the role of Treasurer. Are you good with numbers, know a little bit about balance sheets, and have hours in the month which you would rather spend challenging your intellect than fighting with your TV remote? You would be doing your curling club a world of good.

The club is also in search of a Webmaster. This could be an easy role for the right individual and you would be well respected while serving the PACC community well.

Look for your next PACC Board meeting in January 2016 to get involved. It is your curling club too.

Repeat - Daytime Curling

There are still sheets of ice available at PACC during the day most week days and Saturday.

PACC is interested in using the ice facilities optimally, and this means PACC has room for a few more curlers.

Talk to your friends and neighbours on every occasion possible to get them interested in curling. It is a great sport for the winter and can lead to friendships and fun for many years.

Newcomers can join an existing league or PACC can create a new league given sufficient numbers. PACC will organize the teams too, so feel free to encourage them to join as individuals.

The weekday leagues see mostly Seniors, so if you are Senior you will fit right in. And there are also Juniors before and after school, so get those future curling stars involved too.

Credit Cost Update

Peace Arch curlers have climbed on board the cash and debit card train, and are saving the club those pesky credit cards costs. This is great to see so keep up the good work.

Your use of cash and debit cards, instead of credit cards, equates to about 12 new memberships each year.

It is each little tune-up that makes the ’engine’ of the club that much better.

PCMCA Zone 2 Champs

Could it be YOU?

Time is running out, so if you wish to be considered for the Zone 2 playdowns in Langley (for the Women and Mixed), you better do it now. The Peace Arch representative is Don Cameron. Ensure you talk to him and let him know you have a team that wishes to compete in the PACC playdowns to represent PACC in Langley. The goal; the BC Provincial PCMCA bonspiel in Kelowna from March 15-18, 2016?You have to enter at the club level to qualify.PACC holds a ‘mini’ bonspiel to pick a winner in each of men’s 60+, men’s 70+, women’s 60+, and mixed 60+. These winners will represent PACC in the Zone 2 bonspiels.The Zone 2 bonspiels have only one winner in each category. Those winners will go to Kelowna. You may only get one chance to organize a team and represent your club. Do this now and have tons of fun in 2016.The PCMCA bonspiel in Kelowna is a round robin event with each of the other seven Zones in the Province. This is a great opportunity to meet some great people, curl in another venue, and have a good portion of your expenses paid courtesy of the PCMCA.Go for it!

The Junior Woman’s Team is competing over the holidays in Edmonton, Alta.

PACC will be open for all in the New Year starting on Monday January 4th.

‘High Tides’ Bonspiel

PACC’s big bonspiel of the year, with its Mixed Open format garners the attention of seasoned curlers all targeting the $500 grand prize.The event had 18 teams including 7 visiting teams from other clubs. This great mix created a fun atmosphere and ensured an exciting competition for all four events. The top PACC team was the Mulligan team who defeated team Gunter in a closely contested match. PACC received many compliments from our guests on the friendliness of the event, the quality of our ice (even sheet #1, … really!) and our facility. Although, there was no defence by last

year’s PACC winners, the event crowned a team that is also well known on the lawn bowling circuit. The team winning the bonspiel, the A Event, was the Johnson team from Richmond, shown below receiving the honours from PACC President Marjorie Mooney.John Bogar and Larry Dyok did a super job organizing it. Thank you to all who helped to make this a great event!

PACC Management Update“New Year’s message from our President”

Greetings from your new President! My name is Marjorie Mooney and I have curled at the Peace Arch Curling Club for approximately 30 years (I know, I don’t curl as though I have that much experience!)I have had the pleasure of serving on your Board of Directors since 2009, and became the President this year. During the course of serving on the Board, I have become more aware of the sheer volume of volunteer time that goes into the operation of a successful curling club. In addition to the board of directors, there are the league co-ordinators and their executives, the bonspiel chairs and their committees, the raffle ticket sales people, the pool ticket co-ordinator and salespeople, the learn to curl and novice league volunteers, the junior curling coaches, the school program volunteers, the rental group coaches, people who assist with ice maintenance during bonspiels, people who bring food to the Day of Champions potluck, and no doubt some other categories that I have failed to mention. Many thanks to all of you!Volunteering is a great way to learn how the club operates, and a great way to meet other curlers.In the new year, think about what volunteer position you might be interested in at the club.Right now, we have some specific volunteer positions that need to be filled:• Website master;• Newsletter editor;• Treasurer (this is a Board position);• Anniversary Committee members.

Greycup Party Courtesy of City Brewing

 Greycup Party – come one come all; it will be funtastic! …and it was!!

A big thank-you to City Brewing for sponsoring the PACC Greycup party. The club raised over $4,000 in selling our Greycup tickets. These funds havebeen used to purchase the new TV's and on ice cameras for the club.

Thank you to Darrell Zbeetnoff and Ross Scott for organizing this fundraiserand all of you who purchase these tickets in support of our club.

PCMCA Zone 2Looking for Women

Do you realize that the PCMCA, the Pacific Coast Masters Curling Association, is again having women’s bonspiels in all the Zones to determine a Women’s Zone representative team to go to the Provincial finals being held in Kelowna, B.C.

The PCMCA has rewritten their charter this year to ensure that from 2015 on, ‘Masters’ refers to both men and women.

There are a lot of organizational changes that come with this move, and the good thing is, the changes were embraced whole-heartedly by the PCMCA executive and the members.

For the future, the PCMCA is trying to coordinate more Senior women’s inter-club bonspiels as well.

If you like fantastic fun bonspiels, and possibly having some of your expenses paid if you represent your Zone at the Provincial level, you definitely want to look into membership in the PCMCA. Then get into this PCMCA Ladies Zone 2 bonspiel. There will be a Zone 2 Senior Mixed bonspiel as well.

The Senior Ladies Zone 2 bonspiel is being held in Langley from January 21-23, 2016. The winner represents Zone 2 in Tunnel Town in early February.

Waas-up PACC

Remember when in a group of people that the curling centre is open to all members of the public, offering league play, learn-to-curl programs and ice rentals. And also that the licensed lounge is available for rental for parties and other functions, and the dry floor curling rink area is available to rent in the curling off-season.

The fact is when people need space to hold functions and seminars, space can be hard to find. Help them out by letting them know about our Peace Arch club and encourage them to call 604-531-0244 and find out more.

Quick facts: - The licensed lounge can be rented, with or without

bar service, for meetings, banquets, etc. The lounge has a capacity of 84 people, but that can be increased to 133 people by opening a sliding wall. The area has speakers that can be connected to a microphone or stereo equipment.

- Fully-catered meals can be provided through our on-site caterer, The Rustic Gourmet.

- The curling rink floor includes a perimeter and a concrete slab that is approximately 146 feet by 60 feet.

- Friendly reasonable rates

Volunteer Coaches / Instructors needed

The Peace Arch Curling Club is hosting a 6 week beginners league starting in the New Year. You can still join this league as a player.The new league will be held on Saturdays from 11 am to 1 pm on the following dates: January 9, 23, 30, February 6, 13, 20. The aim is to have 1 coach for each team of 4. If you want to learn how to curl, this is a great inexpensive opportunity.

International Tankard

The 2016 International Tankard returns to BC after being hosted last year in Oregon, U.S.A. This event is designed to recognize and reward volunteers. It will take place March 18-20, 2016 at the Chilliwack Curling Club. All BC curling centres are encouraged to nominate curlers for this event. The theme of this year’s event is Sham/Rock.Worthy volunteers from BritishColumbia (24) and the United States (24) will participate in a weekend of friendly competition and curling fellowship.The deadline to nominate volunteers is February 21, 2016.Please submit your PACC nominations to the PACC office by February 10, 2016.

Memorial’ Bonspiel

The bonspiel was well run with Bryon Jensen at the helm. John Newbury and Barrie Orr handled prizes and 50/50 draws. Steve Dudra was the drawmaster and he made use of a newly automated program to make the draw much easier.The event was full with 16 teams, five of them representing PACC. When the final rock had been thrown, PACC had clearly shown the valley teams there is a curling fortress here in White Rock.The teams and standings are given to the right.Leslie Anderson, Ted Anderson’s daughter, presented the trophy to Team Turner, pictured below.

Annual Senators & Ladies Mixed Bonspiel

Some golden smiles, some smart remarks, yet all in all, just a lot of fun. Were the police called in? Not really.Should they have been.?Sixteen mixed teams threw rocks at a bunch of houses. Would you call the police?The ‘detective’ on the scene recounted ‘From November 16th to 19th, there were a lot of well aimed rocks, some of which even hit their intended target.’When the ‘damage’ was assessed, the perpetrators had already had enough and retired to the lounge, where they enjoyed copious quantities of spirits and a lovely meal.

There was a trophy awarded to the best rock throwing team, consisting of: Skip - Dianne Rollinson, 3rd - Bev Zado, 2nd - Mick Mills, Lead - Alan Stewart.Many thanks to Laurie Hearns for his organizational skills in putting on this annual event.

This is likely the best run bonspiel at PACC. The ladies that put on this bonspiel should be extremely proud of their event which has been a success for a number of years.

Volunteers are a special breed and there is a definite feeling of gratification from just plain ‘helping out’. Do your part to help your club. Volunteer in 2016.

How to use an AED

In case of emergency, the following steps should be taken. • Turn on the AED • Wipe the chest dry • Attach pads to bare chest • Plug in the connector, if necessary • Make sure no one, including you, is touching the person. • Tell everyone loudly “STAND CLEAR!” • Push the analyze button if necessary, let the AED analyze heart rhythm • If AED advises you, push the “shock” button, if necessary.

It doesn’t seem that complicated does it? It is quite simple really. But doing it under the pressure of the moment might just get your blood pumping. Read it over one more time!You never know when you, too, could save a life!

Trio honoured with awards for saving curler’s life (Reprint courtesy of “The Curling Connection” CurlBC Dec 2015)

Scott Mol, Shelley Birston and Della Bird havebeen honoured with awards after saving the life of curling competitor Keith Switzer followinghis on-ice heart attack. Keith had been competing in the BC Mixed Doubles CurlingChampionship at Peace Arch Curling Centreon January 30 2015 when he suddenly collapsed.

Scott Mol, the on-ice official, was the first to respond to Keith’s fall and along with Shelley Birston, a registered nurse who was competingat the event, performed CPR on Keith. Della Bird, also a registered nurse who was on site supporting her husband Kent Bird, the managerof Peace Arch Curling Centre, helped restartKeith’s heart with the assistance of the AED kiton site. The three people are credited not only with saving Keith’s life, but also preserving hisquality of life through their quick and effective response.

The three individuals have now all been presented with a St John Ambulance National Lifesaving Award at a ceremony in Surrey. Keith said he remains incredibly grateful for what Scott, Shelley, and Della were able to do, and he also appreciates the concern, support, and contributions of many others who were present at Peace Arch Curling Centre on thatday. Keith said:”I am doing my level best to dojustice and honour to these lifesaving efforts as my life continues.” To save Keith’s life, CPR from Scott and Shelley and an AED shock from Della was needed to get a response. The first shock only got a temporary response but the second shock brought Keith into motion. Although not fully coherent, once Keith was resuscitated, he began communicating with the responders. He had no idea what had occurred (i.e. - heart attack) and had thought he had just

slipped and fallen. Keith was clear that he was curling and was ready to start the next end (clothes or no clothes). The response team had a little difficulty in convincing him to stay down and be calm. The emergency team then arrived, thanks to Kent Bird calling 911. This included paramedics and the fire department. The paramedics transported Keith to Peace Arch Hospital Emergency and he remained there until the cause of the heart failure was determined andarrangements were made for corrective action. The fact that Keith survived the heart failure and did so without damage to any part of his cardiovascular system is credited to the quick and effective actions of the first responders (Scott, Shelley and Della). Others contributed in response to what occurred; however, these three individuals performed the hands-on life saving intervention. Keith acknowledges he is “one lucky guy”! A comprehensive battery of diagnostic tests was conducted, both at Peace Arch and Vancouver General Hospitals. The most revealing was the Angiogram at VGH. This test identified almost total blockage of the main coronary artery as the cause of the heart failure, presenting a continued high risk. Tests also confirmed that, fortunately, there had been no damage to the heart or other parts of the cardiovascular system. Successful bypass surgerywas performed on February 18 2015 - by Dr. Richard Cook using Jack (the robot). Keith, a member at Richmond and Vancouver Curling Clubs, is now making a full recovery and is already curling regularly!

Changes to the Society Act will affect

your non-profit (Reprint courtesy of “The Curling Connection” CurlBC Dec 2015) The provincial government in British Columbia will be replacing the existing Society Act (under which not-profit corporations in BC are incorporated) with a new Societies Act.

The date for that replacement is November 28, 2016. From that date, organizations will have two years to transition to comply with the new Societies Act.

What does transition mean?

Well, your BC-based organization will need to review its constitution and bylaws to ensure that it complies with the new Act. Changes will be required - some big and some small depending on the current structure of your organization.

In 2016, Curl BC Vice Chair Peter Muir will be putting together a template for members to use that will make it simpler for them to comply with the expected rule changes.
