Mission City Farmers’ Market is holding its annual La Vida Local event on Saturday, September 20 from 9-1. While the market runs every Saturday from May to October in the comfortably shady and cozy parking lot behind the library, there are a number of special events throughout the season. La Vida Local is a celebration of local food, food security, and community involvement.
A number of local agencies will be on hand with information about their roles in providing food security in the community. A three-part process, food security means making sure that everyone has access to healthy food, no matter their circumstances, and ensuring that this access is maintained, even in the face of global changes. It’s a broad and sweeping mandate, but one of the most important things we as a community need to address. Come to the market and learn how you can be involved in all three stages. Stage one is short-term relief, providing food for those who need it. Agencies like food banks, Hope Central, Mission Friendship Centre and school food programs work to make sure that those who are hungry get the healthy food they need. Stage two works on building food skills, and providing a network for sustained food availability. Stage three is redesigning the food system, making sure that policies, support and planning are all in place to keep a strong local food system running.
The Mission City Farmers’ Market is a vital part of the second stage of food security. Local farmers provide fresh produce every Saturday, with some of them also offering farm gate sales throughout the week, and/or CSA (community supported agriculture) boxes. CSA members
seasonal produce, providing regular and assured income and customers for the farmers. Because of the close-knit and friendly environment at the market, customers will often try new foods, encouraged by the farmers and other customers who will frequently offer advice on how to cook and serve what is for sale. The La Vida local event features chef demos throughout the day as well, using ingredients that can be bought on-site.
Produce isn’t the only thing on offer at the market. Vendors also sell seeds, seedlings and even established plants so that home gardeners have a local and varied source for
and knitted items and a variety of delicious baked goods are also available, as well as meats, cheeses, honey and preserves. Buying at the market cuts down our collective carbon foot-print as we decrease our dependence on mass-produced goods that are shipped in from far away, and creates jobs right where we live, giving everybody a chance to commute less, relax more, and enjoy life.
Food security is important to all of us, so come on out to La Vida Local to learn more about it, and be a part of it- all the produce you need is right there at the Farmers’ Market, as well as so much more!

Understanding the foreclosure process!In B.C., foreclosures occur when a homeowner/borrower defaults on the payments of a mortgage. The lender will apply to the court to sell the home to recover the monies owed. Before the home can be sold, the homeowner/borrower usually has 6 months to redeem/payout the mortgage after which the bank/lender acts as the vendor in selling the home and lists the home for sale with a realtor.

A brand is not a logo or a tagline, but the perception or story that a community offers. Trying to discover this story is what Mission’s Brand is all about. Over the summer we have asked weekly questions. The conversation is to draw out the values and story of Mission. This is the foundation of building a brand for Miss ion. The community ’s participation and the diversity of voices has been appreciated and is valued immensely.
For example in week four we asked: ‘Why do you live in Mission?’ This generated a lot of strong responses. Some said it was for the outdoor recreational activities, but most said they live in Mission for the affordability in housing. They stay because of the beautiful scenery that surrounds us, and the close knit community feel.
Another question asked was; ‘What kind of people live in Mission?’ Most commented that our town contains
friendly and welcoming people.
“People are just who they are here... authentic, laid back, and not afraid of other people being who they really are too...” (W. Talbot).

Tara has just been hired on as a What’s On! Mission “follow up” distributor. She is excited about this opportunity to make money and give back to her community and her job gives her a great sense of pride. Norman, a member of Centennial Place, says meaningful employment is important to people managing their mental wellness and can enhance recovery, while offering opportunities to connect with others. These are things that Tara values. She receives support at Mission Association for Community Living (MACL) through
their Employment and Bridge Training services and dispels the myth that people with developmental disabilities don’t want to work. “We can be hard working, loyal employees.”
The current rate of employment among people with mental illness is low despite research which supports the impact that work plays in promoting recovery.

Behind the Scenes Activity is Bringing World Class Technical Centre to Mission’s Downtown

As we all know, agriculture is important to the Fraser Valley and agricultural technology is a growing and important element of that sector.Still mostly vacant, the recently purchased building in Mission’s downtown gives no hint of the behind-the-scenes activity that will soon bring it to life as a world class Technical Centre of Excellence (TCE) for emerging agricultural tech companies. But in fact there is a lot going
around the corner. Consider the following:
• The facility will require an anchor tenant to help defray leasing costs and provide mentoring. That anchor tenant has signed a memorandum of understanding, and is scheduled to occupy the building this fall.
• Mission’s TCE (Technical Centre of Excellence) will provide accommodation and mentoring for emerging and incubator high tech businesses. 12 companies have already expressed interest.
Centre has been submitted to the British Columbia Innovation Council. Final approval is expected by mid to late August.
• Work is underway to create a consortium of credit
fund that will give access to capital locally.• Letters of support have been received from Mission,
Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Invest North Fraser partners,

its new uses, and renovation work will commence very shortly.

IngredientsGreens:1 small head of butter lettuce, washed and dried3 leaves of radicchio, washed and dried3 leaves of Belgian endive, washed and dried 1 hard-boiled egg3 fresh blackberries
Dressing:2 tbsp. mayonnaise¼ tsp. red wine vinegar1/8 tsp. chopped fresh dill few drops of Lea and Perrin’s Worcestershire Saucesalt and pepper to taste
Directions1. Hard boil egg, cool in cold water, remove shell, and chop egg.2. Whisk together the dressing ingredients except for salt and pepper.
Add salt and pepper to taste. 3. Flood serving plate with dressing. 4. Arrange the radicchio and endive on top of the dressing to provide a
frame for the butter lettuce.5. Remove root from butter lettuce and use as many leaves as needed to

Ingredients1 ripe tomato with stem attached, washed and dried1 fresh mozzarella cheese5 fresh basil leaves balsamic vinegarextra virgin olive oilcoarse sea salt & fresh ground pepper
Directions1. In a small pot bring 1 cup of balsamic vinegar to a simmer until it is
reduced* by half. Cool and pour into a small squeeze bottle. 2. Slice the tomato in ¼” slices crosswise, discard the bottom slice so the
tomato will stand on the plate.3. Slice the mozzarella cheese in ¼” slices.
Assembly: Build your salad by layering the tomato, mozzarella and basil leaves in the center of a dinner plate. Don’t be tempted to make too many layers! The top layer is the tomato slice with the stem attached. If you are making more than one salad make all of them to this step. Once all salads are assembled, drizzle the reduced balsamic vinegar on the plate. Drizzle a few drops of olive oil on the top of the tomato allowing it to cascade down the sides. Sprinkle with sea salt and fresh ground pepper.

I am a 53 year old man who is self-employed in a field of work that demands me to be very physically fit. I struggled to walk. I couldn't operate my legs normally. I had muscle weakness and was losing muscle mass.I suffer from fibromyalgia. The condition causes widespread pain, and in turn chronic fatigue, sleep deprivation, and often depression. I had all of these. I also suffer from arthritis causing joint pain all the time. I had no energy and felt like my health was degrading slowly.

What is Community Inclusion and why does it matter? If you were born in British Columbia before 1980, you may not have school memories of learning alongside kids with developmental disabilities. In the past, ‘those kids’ were often labeled and placed in institutions and denied the rights that most of us take for granted. The community living movement was formed by parents to advocate for family members who have developmental disabilities to be fully included in all elements of community life. Here in B.C. the community living movement resulted in the closure of institutions. When folks moved into communities, there were opportunities for community members to meet, form friendships, and learn from those with labels. Our lives are richer for the connections we have. We may understand resilience in a new way and carry a deep appreciation for the beauty of diversity.
While the deinstitutionalization of people resulted in profound change and social improvement for individuals with disabilities, the movement still has work to do on the social justice front. From our perspective, community inclusion is not a social justice issue for those who have disabilities, it is a social justice issue for those who do not. Inclusive communities are better communities for all of us. Many doors have yet to be opened to ensure that people who have been marginalized may fully realize the experience of living in welcoming communities. MACL strives to further inclusion by supporting individuals and children with developmental disabilities to have inclusive preschool experiences, attend neighborhood schools, participate in inclusive recreation and leisure activities, live in neighborhoods they choose, work at real jobs for real pay, and access community services.
There are many ways you can join the community inclusion movement! Become a member of MACL, donate to our work, become a champion employer, get to know someone with a developmental disability, and attend our 15th annual Illuminaria festival to celebrate inclusion!
In the words of Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”

On October 3rd, come celebrate the cultural diversity that makes up our Mission community with the Mission
International Cultural Association. MICA is hosting a “Mission Mosaic” dinner fundraiser where attendees
can “come where they’re from”, dressing in attire from their culture or from a culture that is meaningful to them.
Western attire is of course acceptable, but who could miss an opportunity to wear their favorite lederhosen? Dinner will
include entertainment, a silent auction, an entrée of kare raisu from Japan, and other global fare. Tickets are $25, with proceeds going to the Philippine Red Cross and to
support further cultural events hosted by MICA.

“My dream going into the Miss BC pageant was to be able to continue my work in helping youth build a sense of belonging and identity. My dream is to inspire youth to be true to themselves, understand there are no limitations to their dreams. I want to speak to youth about not being afraid to be real, to have the courage and
and follow their passions. I want to be real with youth and tell them my experiences and how I had to learn to love myself more above all, so I could walk away from certain situations and people. My passion behind that dream comes from that I once felt like I didn’t really know what I wanted like any typical youngster, I just wanted to feel like I belonged in my circle of friends. I felt a loss of my cultural identity, sometimes I was made fun of for being First Nations, I have been stereotyped and put down and experienced racism, I knew I was First Nations, but I didn’t know what it was like to know the ceremonies, songs and traditions. I felt like I didn’t know my identity because of that, at times I was embarrassed to be something I didn’t really know much of, the words were almost believable, the little I did know about the culture was from the Aboriginal Program and Aboriginal leadership program in my high school which I participated in. I have always been thankful that I grew up in a very loving and caring family who have been my biggest support. My mother was adopted at a young age to an amazing family, but my mother wasn’t raised in the culture, so I felt like I had a hole inside of me that I didn’t know
my culture. I felt like I couldn’t truly be proud of who I was until I could answer all those questions people
had asked me before, just so I could answer them for myself.” -
My family are spiritual and religious people, everyone in my family is in their own way. I became more so when I went through struggles and the journey it took to heal and learn how to cope healthy and holistically. Throughout my childhood into adolescents my family and I went through great sadness in tragedies of losing loved ones. At a young age it was hard to handle those emotions of grief and loss, as well as dealing with the many different transitions and experiences of becoming an adolescent, some of those experiences were traumatizing I was putting myself in many risky situations.
I had a wake up call after I almost lost my own life due to unhealthy choices. I had the mind frame that nothing would happen to me. I was beginning to learn through the guidance of my family and services of others that I was in need to overview the life I was living and the life I wanted to live. I knew the person I wanted to be, I just had to believe in myself. I took time to myself and surrounded myself with positive people and took the steps to educate myself, volunteer and gain experience in
Now that I have reached my dream and become an Aboriginal Liaison worker in the Mission School District I feel proud and dedicated to working with youth and being able to make a positive difference in their lives through culture and support.
