Alberto Giacometti is widely regarded as one of the most important and distinctive artists of the 20th century. A restless innovator, he explored a range of styles and subjects; however portraiture remained a continuous preoccupation.

This major exhibition is the first to focus on Giacometti’s portraits and spans his entire career. The show includes important paintings, sculpture and drawings within sections devoted to each of his principal models, and illuminates Giacometti’s obsessive evocation of a human presence.

Audrey Hepburn was one of the world’s most glamorous, recognisable and photographed stars. From her early career as a chorus girl in London’s West End through to her Hollywood heyday and humanitarian work in her later years, Hepburn’s life as a twentieth-century icon is beautifully illustrated in this must-see exhibition.

Through a stunning selection of more than seventy images from leading photographers, such as Cecil Beaton and Irving Penn, as well as rarely seen photographs from the personal collection of her sons Luca Dotti and Sean Hepburn Ferrer, the exhibition reveals the development of her unique and captivating style.

Gallery Displays

Floor 2 Room 5Van Dyck: Transforming British Art

Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641) was the most influential portrait painter ever to work in Britain. This display looks at the artist’s work and how he transformed British portraiture. Comprising portraits from the Gallery’s own Collection, supplemented by two rarely-seen paintings of King Charles I and Henrietta Maria from Chequers, the self-portrait is set alongside other works by the artist, paintings from his studio and portraits by his contemporaries and followers. Organised with support from the Art Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund

From 4 September

Across the Gallery Simon Schama’s Face of Britain

Historian Simon Schama has joined with National Portrait Gallery curators to take a fresh look at the Collection and present a cross-period exploration of the history of Britain through portraiture. Focusing on the themes of Power, Love, Fame, Self and People, he asks what makes a successful portrait and what this tells us about the individual and collective psyche of the time. Simon Schama’s accompanying five-part BBC series, with an associated book published by Viking Penguin, is broadcast this autumn.

From 16 September

Floor 0 Room 38 and 38aCreative Connections: Camden Radical Characters

Creative Connections showcases new work created by photographer Kate Peters and young people from Haverstock School in Camden. The photographic series responds to the lives, achievements and attributes of creative, visionary and pioneering people, past and present in the Gallery’s photography collection with a connection to Camden. Exhibited alongside the Collection, the display offers a playful invitation to explore the relationship between the two. Creative Connections is generously supported by the Palley Family

Until 11 October

Floor 0 Room 41 and 41aFriendship Portraits: Chantal Joffe and Ishbel Myerscough

This display of paintings by Chantal Joffe and Ishbel Myerscough explores the artists’ friendship and shared history, which dates back to their student days at Glasgow School of Art. In their self-portraits and portraits of each other and their children they attempt to search out what it feels like to be each other and, in turn, themselves.Supported by the William Brake Charitable Trust

Until 28 September

The Gallery’s changing programme of free displays highlight a range of themes, sitters and artists, as well as significant anniversaries and acquisitions.
