War Games4 October – 11 January

War Games explores the fascinating relationship between conflict and children’s play, providing an insight into the way toys have been influenced by warfare from 1800 to the present day.

With toys and games including Risk, GI Joe and classic toy soldiers, as well as photographs, film and archive documents, War Games represents some of the differing sides of conflicts from around the world. The exhibition reveals surprising links between play and wider attitudes towards warfare, delving into the secret history of toys as tools of propaganda and espionage, whilst encouraging visitors to question their own views and contribute to the debate on playing at war.

Curated by the V&A Museum of Childhood, the exhibition showcases over 100 objects from the Museum of Childhood’s collection, as well as important loans from the Imperial War Museum, the Museum of London, the Spielzeugmuseum, Nuremberg, and private collectors.

£3 per adult, children free, includes entrance to Stunning In Silver

ARTIST ROOMS: Anselm Kiefer7 February – 7 June 2015

Born in Germany in 1945, now living and working in France, Anselm Kiefer is one of the most important post-war European artists.

Encompassing themes of environment, identity and memory as well as myth, history and literature, Kiefer’s works often address the legacy and identity of Germany and individuals after World War II. The artists use of natural materials such as lead, rope, ash and sand, bring an emotional and sculptural element to his paintings and photographs.

The exhibition features works spanning the past 40 years of Kiefer’s career and presents a remarkable opportunity to see this ARTIST ROOMS group of works in the UK.

ARTIST ROOMS is an inspirational collection of modern and contemporary art jointly owned by Tate and the National Galleries Scotland, which was established through The d’Offay Donation in 2008 and acquired with support from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Art Fund and Scottish and British Governments.

Get involved! Are you aged between 16 – 25 and interested in contemporary art? Join our Creative Development Programme inspired by ARTIST ROOMS. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the world of creative arts through hands on workshops, meeting industry professionals and creating your own artistic response to the Anselm Kiefer exhibition. Contact [email protected] or visit our website to find out more.

Stunning in Silver4 October 2014 – 11 January 2015

This display focuses on one of the most romantic and extravagant wedding dresses in the Tullie House collections.

Bulloughs Department Store in Carlisle made the dress to the bride’s own design. The bride chose an exquisite fabric for her dress made from silver thread. As an alternative to the traditional white wedding dress it is simply stunning.

Muriel Cavaghan wore the dress for her marriage to David Kerr Duff in Carlisle in 1927.

£3 per adult, children free. Includes entrance to War Games

Come tek a deekTuesday 13 January, 1pm Meet at reception

As part of the new Shed project we are hosting a gallery conversation for the upcoming exhibition called ‘Come tek a deek’. This will give people opportunity to talk to us and hopefully meet some of the people behind the exhibition and have a crack.

Artist RoomsThroughout the exhibition, our Museum Assistants will be holding Gallery Conversations on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11.30am and 2pm. In these short, informal sessions, staff will give a brief introduction to the exhibition and then hand over to you: what do you think about Anselm Kiefer’s work? Are there any particular pieces that inspire you?
