In all, Cuba produces over 40 kinds of cigars, with various pricing. Themajor cigar assembling areas in Cuba are Pinar del Rio and Sancti Spiritus. These two

areas have perfect soil and weather conditions required for producing the tobaccoused in the cigars.

Typically there are 25 cigars in one box sold. A box of cigars in Cuba can go for asmuch as $400-$500 dollars, and can cost three times as much to purchase outside ofCuba. Many people wait to buy their cigars at the airport when leaving Cuba, because you have already passed Cuban customs. This means you can buy more thanthe legal export limit. Also, the tax exemption makes the cigars cheaper.

    Guatemala

Guatemala is the second largestproducer of broccoli imported to theUnited States, accounting for 14% oftotal imports. Agriculture in Guatemalacontributes 23 percent to the totalGross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Agrarian Reform Law of 1952helped redistribute State owned

farmlands to landless farmers in aneffort to increase crop production andstimulate an improvement in livingstandards for the poor. In 1962, theAgrarian Improvement Institute wascreated to provide assistance to newfarmers.

In 2011, Guatemala exported nearly 14 millionpounds of corn. Guatemalas primary use for mass

produced, natively grown corn both internally andas an export is in food products like corn mealwhich is used to make tortillas. Subsistencefarmers use the corn they produce as theirprimary food source.

Guatemala uses imported rejected, 2nd, 3rd,

or 4th grade corn as its known, from the UnitedStates to feed livestock because it is cheaper tobuy and import from the large corn farms in theStates.

Guatemala produces many different types ofpeppers which are used locally and abroad in manydifferent recipes. The Chiltepin, or Chiltepe pepper as

its also known, is one of the most commonly used

peppers in Guatemala.Tabasco brand hot sauce, one of the most popular

in the United States, is made with peppers produced inGuatemala among other countries. The peppers aregrown, hand picked and then made into a paste with

just the peppers, salt and vinegar added. The resultingmash is then shipped to the United States forfermenting and bottling.

Coffee is the second most tradedcommodity in the world, next to oil.

Guatemala's coffee productionaccounts for around 15% of its Gross

Domestic Product (GDP). Over half ofthe coffee produced in Guatemala isshipped to the United States andGuatemala has the highest percentageof its total crop classified as High

Quality out of all coffee producing

    countries.

In 2011, Guatemala exports ofcoffee into the United States totaled$577 million dollars (US).

    Tapas are finger foods, snacks,

    which originated in Spain. Tapas

can be practically anything froma piece of meat, olive on a

toothpick, to meat with a small

dish of sauce on the side.

    Spaniards often enjoy them with

a glass of wine and relaxation.

Tapas are served practically everywhere in

Spain, restaurants to bars. The snack is so

prevalent in Spain and their culture that

Spaniards coined the word tapear, meaning togo eat tapas.Tapas are not considered a type

of food but more the way the food is eaten.

Tapas are not considered an appetizer or a

meal, and they are eaten until one is full.

Tapas is a way of eating in which to bring

people to gather people together to enjoy a

    snack.

Bodegas, the 7-11 of the Hispanic community!

Bodega is Spanish for grocery store. However, in the United States the termis often used to speak of convenience stores in stock with a variety ofHispanic and Latin goods. Bodegas make available items which arent

available locally due to cultural differences between the United States and

    Spanish speaking countries.

In larger cities bodegas are often found in Spanish speaking neighborhoods.Often they are owned by Latin Americans eager to restore and extend their

culture and cultural heritage, meanwhile attempting to serve theircommunity (Latin or American) with products otherwise unreachable due

    to this same cultural difference.

Offering products ranging from Spanish soft-drinks (sometimes even

alcoholic beverages!) to home processed meats and fresh vegetables, bodegas come in many different flavors and sizes.

La Tienda in Gainesville, FL is part bodega and part authenticMexican cuisine restaurant. This bodega has the essentials to make

(or purchase) a meal outside of American influence.

Tortilla is a name given by the Spaniards to unleavened flatbread . Thisflatbread was found in Mexico among the Aztec in the sixteenth century. The wordtortilla comes from the Spanish word torta, which means round cake. Tortillas are

made by curing maize in limewater, which causes the skin of the kernel to peel off.The next steps are to grind, cook and knead until it is approximately six to eight inchesin diameter. It is then placed on a hot Comal (a smooth flat griddle), and cooked for

about thirty seconds on each side. Today, this ancient method is still used. In Mexico,a young girl will spend years learning the secrets to making the perfect tortilla.

The infamous Tango dates back to the early 1800s and is one of themost popular dances requested to learn from instructors. Though there

are some variances in the dance, the choreography steps always include

a lead and follow pattern. Couples move to the music with their chests

pressed close together or in a close embrace. Modern revisions of thedance have been made where the male supports the upper thigh of his

partner. These variances can be seen while watching couples compete

on reality television shows such as Dancing with the Stars. With millions

of viewers tuning in every week it is no surprise that the popularity of the

tango only continues to grow, and continues to remain one of the most

sensual and alluring dances of all time.

    La Carreta de Costa Rica

Carretas, or oxcarts, have become a recognizedsymbol of Costa Rica. They date back to the early 19th

Century and were used to transport coffee, a mainexport of Costa Rica at the time, to the rich cost to beexported. They have spokeless wheels to cut through

the mud as much of the year is a rainy season for thecountry.

The intricate and flamboyant designs sprung fromthe wife of Fructuoso Barrantes, a cart maker, whosaw the wheels as a canvas and began painting old

carts to give them a revived energy. er idea caughton like wildfire and soon every farmer was paintingtheir carts. Many were even rigged to make musicas they were pulled. Farmers began taking pride in

their carts and they gradually morphed into more ofan art than a form of transportation.

Pisco was introduced to Peru through the

Spanish Conquistadors in the 1400s. The

Spaniards introduced the native people to

Spanish customs, one of which was producing

and drinking wine. The Peruvians looked into

making their own wine by importing grape vinesfrom Spain. Peruvian Pisco became so well-

known that it attracted General Jose de San

Martin, leader of the South American revolution

against the Spanish Empire, to visit the port of

    Ica, Peru in 1820

Fun Fact: It is illegal to import Chilean Pisco in Peru. However, it is not illegal to do the opposite in Chile.

Pisco is a grape based brandy(a distilled form of

wine). Peruvian and Chileans are constantlyarguing over their different forms of Pisco. The

main difference is Peruvian Pisco is left in repose

for up to three months, while Chilean Pisco is

aged in wooden barrels for slightly longer.

its origins traced to the CanaryIslands. Many South American

countries have their own spin on

making Ropa Vieja. Cuban Ropa istraditionally made with just flank

steak, seasonings and a few typesof vegetables. Other countries add

chick peas, potatoes and otheringredients to the recipe.

    La Ropa Vieja

Ropa Vieja is typically cooked by

roughly chopping up the vegetables, adding them in a sauce pan with

water, seasonings and usually a flanksteak. It is then simmered for several

hours until both the vegetables andsteak are very tender. In Cuba it is
