Using Social Media MarketingContinued from page 1
The four pillars to engage people with social media arecommunication, collaboration, education, and enter-tainment. Some categories of social media are socialnetworking, publishing, photo sharing, audios or pod-casts, videos, microblogging, livecasting, gaming, andRSS (Rich Site Summary). Social media marketinguses these web-based applications for sales, public rela-tions, marketing and customer service.
According to a study released by Aberdeen Group, 63percent of companies planned to increase their socialmedia marketing budgets in 2009, despite the currentstate of the economy. Meanwhile, consumers arebeginning to expect companies to have a social mediapresence. 93% of Americans expect companies to havea social media presence and are using it to participatein conversations, engage with brands, and find jobopportunities.
Twitter feeds can entice customers, for example, bygiving away $1 to every person who sign up during a30-day period. For example, Pizza Hut went on ahunt for a “twintern” – an intern who could use theTwitter lingo to keep fans up-to-date on Pizza Huthappenings. And Papa John’s recently launched itsfirst Facebook-exclusive promotion.
These companies are leading the way in a mass move-ment. In the next two to three years, it won’t be calledsocial media – it will just be the way everyone doesbusiness. How can you use social media effectively?
- If you are a business-to-consumer company, useFacebook – both fan pages and groups – and Twitter tomeet your social media goals.
- If you are a business-to-business company, useTwitter and LinkedIn to achieve your social mediaobjectives. Start small and build from there.
- Just jump in – social media is not an exact science,so just start and learn from doing. It is an evolvingmedium, and it is hard to know all the answers beforelaunching.
- For those who are still intimidated by the unknownof social media, if you’re not participating in the conversations, or if you just don’t have time, you mightnot have a business in a few years.
