Wheaton & Kensington Chamber’s 26th Annual Community Awards The annual awards dinner is a hallmark event of the Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce. Business leaders, community activists, residents and elected officials all come together to recognize the wonderful achievements of our honorees. The banquet was held at the reopened and larger Hollywood East Café on 11160 Veirs Mill Road, #136, in Westfield Wheaton’s Restaurant Row. The awards honor businesses, students, teachers, Chamber members, and Public Safety Workers for their enthusiastic contributions to the richness of the Wheaton & Kensington Community. For over 15 years, the Chamber has also recognized our area high school students and also included monetary gifts provided by our various sponsors. The Chamber has been committed to encourag- ing local businesses to mentor the students destined to become our future leaders. The Chamber would like to congratulate the Recipients of our 26th Annual Community Awards and also thank our keynote speaker Connie Morella and our Sponsors who helped us celebrate the connection and goodwill between citizens, businesses, schools, and public safety workers in our community. Our keynote speaker was Connie Morella, former U.S. Congresswoman from MD. She currently serves on American University’s faculty as an Ambassador in Residence for the Women in Politics Institute. The advent of social media tools like Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and YouTube has shaken up all sorts of businesses - small one-person companies to huge corporations. Social media platforms are quickly becoming an important part of companies’ marketing strategies, especially in a time of lower marketing budgets. The March 17 mixer was held at the Wheaton Regional Library, 11701 Georgia Avenue in Wheaton. Our presen- tation was given by Debby Marindin, Social Media and Marketing Instructor, Montgomery College Workforce Development & Continuing Education. Debby also has a consulting and development business at www.MarindinConsulting.com. Information about Montgomery College classes on these and other business topics was also available. Check for the current class schedules at www.mont- gomerycol- lege.edu/wdce. Social media refers to activities, practices, and behaviors among communities of people who gather online to share information, knowledge, and opinions using conversational media that can be prompted, promoted, and monetized. Conversational media on web-based applications make it possible to create and easily transmit content in words, pictures, videos and audios. Using Social Media MarketingContinued from page 1

The four pillars to engage people with social media arecommunication, collaboration, education, and enter-tainment. Some categories of social media are socialnetworking, publishing, photo sharing, audios or pod-casts, videos, microblogging, livecasting, gaming, andRSS (Rich Site Summary). Social media marketinguses these web-based applications for sales, public rela-tions, marketing and customer service.

According to a study released by Aberdeen Group, 63percent of companies planned to increase their socialmedia marketing budgets in 2009, despite the currentstate of the economy. Meanwhile, consumers arebeginning to expect companies to have a social mediapresence. 93% of Americans expect companies to havea social media presence and are using it to participatein conversations, engage with brands, and find jobopportunities.

Twitter feeds can entice customers, for example, bygiving away $1 to every person who sign up during a30-day period. For example, Pizza Hut went on ahunt for a “twintern” – an intern who could use theTwitter lingo to keep fans up-to-date on Pizza Huthappenings. And Papa John’s recently launched itsfirst Facebook-exclusive promotion.

These companies are leading the way in a mass move-ment. In the next two to three years, it won’t be calledsocial media – it will just be the way everyone doesbusiness. How can you use social media effectively?

- If you are a business-to-consumer company, useFacebook – both fan pages and groups – and Twitter tomeet your social media goals.

- If you are a business-to-business company, useTwitter and LinkedIn to achieve your social mediaobjectives. Start small and build from there.

- Just jump in – social media is not an exact science,so just start and learn from doing. It is an evolvingmedium, and it is hard to know all the answers beforelaunching.

- For those who are still intimidated by the unknownof social media, if you’re not participating in the conversations, or if you just don’t have time, you mightnot have a business in a few years.
