Following a one-yearabsence, the Beetle is backwith sharper styling, aroomier and up-to-date inte-rior and more power.
Gone is the New Beetle’s oval, almost cartoonishappearance, replaced bya longer hood and flatter roofline thatends in a rounded hatchway flanked by a set of prominent taillights. The Beetle iswider by more than 7.5 centimetres and has been lengthened by 15 centimetres. Additionally, the distance between thefront and rear wheels has been increased to create some much-needed rear-seat leg-room plus a more generous stowage area with either the 50:50 split rear seat occu-pied or folded flat. On up-level models a trio of gauges (oil temp, turbo boost pres-sure and clock/stopwatch) seem inspiredby the Porsche 911 cockpit.
Getting the Beetle up to speed are three distinct powerplants. Base models arrive with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylin-der that pretty much carries over fromthe New Beetle. Optional is VW’s popular140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (TDI) that offers a very real alternative to most gas-electric hybrids when overall fuel economy and initial purchase cost areeconomy and initial purchase cost are
factored in. The top-rung and most per-formance-focused Beetle gets it done with a 200-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that also returns slightly better fuel economy than the base five-cylinder engine.cylinder engine.

Volkswagen knows how to make sporty, efficientvehicles, but is finally listen-ing to its fan base. While the fun GTI has been thedefinition of “hot hatch” for decades, it has been outgunned in recent yearsby younger competitors from Japan and North America. For 2012, the German automaker offers up the limited edition Golf R with its 256-horsepower version ofthe GTI’s familiar 2.0-litre turbochargedfour-cylinder engine, only available witha six-speed manual transmission. It’s alsothe only Golf to feature all-wheel-drive tobetter help put the grunt to the road.
The regular Golf remains available intwo- and four-door hatchback and four-door wagon variants with a base 170-horsepower2.5-litre five-cylinder engine. There’s also a 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel that’squite torquey and good for 4.6 l/100 km onthe highway and 6.7 in the city, which isabout 35 per cent better than the base 2.5.As before, the sporty GTI is available intwo- and four-door models and comes witha carryover 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre gasoline four-cylinder along with a six-speed manual transmission or anoptional paddled shifted six speed Direct optional paddled-shifted six-speed Direct

The new Jetta Hybrid offers the best of all worlds, marrying performance and engaging han-dling with miserly combined fuel economy.
Powering the all-new model is a high-tech turbocharged gasoline engine mated to a zero- emis-sions electric motor. The sporty hybridconsumes about 20 per cent less fuel thana similarly powered sedan with a conven-tional drivetrain. In city traffic, the fueleconomy advantage climbs to a little over30 percent.
As in the Touareg Hybrid SUV, the JettaHybrid features a clutch that decouplesthe gasoline engine from the drivetrainwhen in pure electric drive or coasting modes.
A lithium-ion battery supplies the ener-gy to the electric motor. The compact 220-volt, 1.1 kWh battery is integrated behind the rear bench seat and weighs less than80 lb.
The battery consists of 60 individualcells with a combined energy capacity of5 Ah. The frequency of the discharge and charge cycles in hybrid operation requires high-performance battery cooling, whichis handled by a fan mounted directly on t e de ce. e batte y a so as ts othe device. The battery also has its own
management system that performs safety, diagnostic, and monitoring functions as well as temperature management. The battery is disconnected when it’s not in use or if the car is involved in a collision.
Three trims will be offered for the Jetta Hybrid. Standard features includeBluetooth technology, LED taillights,SiriusXM®satellite radio, special 15-inchaluminum-alloy wheels, and a unique

The old 115-horsepower 2.0-litrefour-cylinder engine was returned tothe fold. VW claims about a 10-secondzero-to-100-km time, which is notamazing acceleration, but it works for cost-conscious buyers more inter-ested in the bottom line than pep. The170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder gasengine returns as an option, as does thepopular 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-die-sel (called the TDI) that’s rated at 6.7 l/100km in the city and 4.6 l/100 km on the highway. The performance-minded Jetta GLI finally returns with its 200-horsepow-er turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder andtrack-tuned suspension, big wheels andsticky tires.
The gasoline engines are mated to five-speed manual transmissions, or optionalsix-speed automatics. The turbo-diesel offers a six-speed manual or optional six-speed automated manual transmissioncalled the DSG (short for Direct ShiftGearbox) that does away with the pesky torque converter, which means improved fuel economy and much quicker shifts to aid acceleration.
Equipment levels on the price-leaderTrendline and Comfortline models prettymuch mirror what you’ll find from the co pet t o . ou get a bas c aud o syscompetition. You’ll get a basic audio sys-
tem, 15-inch steel wheels and the usual po e ope ated accesso es.power-operated accessories.

The new Passat is ninecentimetres longer overall and the distance between the front and rear wheelshas been stretched by about the same amount, which makes for an appreciablegain in passenger room.
The interior styling, inspired byVolkswagen’s new-look Touareg sport ute, is clean and uncluttered.
VW has dropped the Passat’s previously standard 200-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged powerplant and replaced it with a less-expensive non-turbo 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder. A280-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 is optional, as is Volkswagen’s hybrid-challenging 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-dieselthat will give the Passat a claimed rat-ing of 6.8 l/100 km on the highway (4.4 in the city), along with a range approach-ing 1,300 kilometres. The base 2.5 offers a five-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic. Meanwhile both the V6 and the turbo-diesel operates with a six-speed dual-clutch (automatedmanual) gearbox. The Passat’s starting-point Trendline model is equipped with automatic climate control, cruise control, automatic climate control, cruise control,
outside temperature display and Bluetoothshort-range wireless connectivity. Also standard is Hill Climb Assist that helps keep manual gearbox models from rolling.keep manual-gearbox models from rolling.

The Tiguan is the latestVolkswagen to get its face lifted and now looks evenmore like its larger Touareg sibling. The horizontal grillesplits bi-xenon (high and low beam) headlights and U-shaped LED (light emit-ting diode) on top-end models, while therear taillights get more subtle tweaks.
Equally sharp looking is the interiorthat carries over for 2012 with the high-end-style dash, cleanly tailored seats and premium carpeting. Rear passengers will appreciate the 15 centimetres of fore/afttravel as well as the reclining 60/40 split seat back. For more cargo space, the rear seat back, as well as the front passenger bucket, can be folded flat. The space ismade even more generous due to the extra-low load floor. The Tiguan is powered by a 200-horse 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylin-der connected to a six-speed manual trans-mission or optional six-speed automatic.Tiguan runs the spectrum with three trim levels and plenty of base equipment of the air/cruise/power variety as well asredesigned alloy wheels - including giant19-inch R Design beauties on the loaded SEL - and six standard airbags. Along with
VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive (which isonly available with the automatic trans-mission), the options list includes rear-seatside-impact airbags, a 300-watt premium audio package, touch-screen navigation system, rear-view park assist, bigger wheels and an oversized moonroof.

The 2.0-litre four-cyl-inder uses Mazda’s new “Skyactiv” direct-gasoline-injection technology to boostboth power and efficiency. Compared to the old 2.0-litre (which carries over in base models) the Skyactiv has 155horsepower (versus 148) and 148 pound-feet of torque (versus 135). It also wins infuel economy too, netting 7.1 city and 4.9highway with the available six-speed auto-matic transmission, or 7.7/5.0 with the six-speed manual. Very impressive.
But Skyactiv is really more than just a powertrain upgrade as the philosophy extends to lowering weight, improving chassis stiffness and steering response. For now, only the Skyactiv Mazda3 isupgraded in such a manner. If you’re notgetting into the Skyactiv game, your choic-es consist of carryover models from 2011.
Base sedans and hatchbacks run with the same 148-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that’s connected tothe five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. Optional is a 167-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder that’s derived from the larger Mazda6 sedan. Here, your transmission picks con-sist of a slick shifting six speed manual sist of a slick-shifting six-speed manual

Mazda’s pair of on-roadwagons will become a triolater in 2012 when the com-pact CX-5 joins the party. It’ll be just like the Three Bears, and in this case, the seven-seat CX-9 is the full-onPoppa Bear. And we’re not talking occasional seating for seven, buta full third-row seat for real, live, adult earthlings.
While it would have been easy enough for Mazda to graft extra length to the CX-7to create the CX-9 (and probably ruin the vehicle’s near-perfect proportions inthe process) Mazda stylists were careful to make the CX-9 its own vehicle. The lines are a little less abrupt and exag-gerated than those of the CX-7, and theoverall look is certainly more formal. The smaller CX-7 wears a base 2.5-litre four-cylinder and a five-speed automatic transmission. By contrast, the CX-9 comes with a 273-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 with decent fuel efficiency, as high as 12.7/8.4(city/highway) l/100 km for front-drive models. While the CX-7 and 9 are visu-ally similar, there’s not all that much - if anything, really - that interchanges, espe-cially when it comes to the body. However,
pboth are available in front or optional
all-wheel-drive. The CX-9 is available infront-wheel-drive GS and all-wheel-drive GT trims with a healthy base features listthat includes front and rear air condition-ing, new-design 18-inch wheels and most power features. Selecting the GT alsoadds leather seats, power moonroof andliftgate, power seats, blind-spot monitor-ing, keyless start, revised 20-inch wheels, bright xenon headlamps and rain-sensing
p g y pwipers. A navigation system is optional.

Skyactiv technologies are a holistic approach to improving all future Mazdas throughwhat the automaker bills as“optimized internal combustion and lightweight engineering.” To that end, the Hiroshima-based automaker is focusing its efforts on engines, transmissions, body, and chassis development to achieve performance and efficiencygoals. The 2013 CX-5 is the first offering with Mazda’s entire suite of Skyactiv technologies in one vehicle.
The CX-5’s Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter gasengine differs slightly from the unitinstalled in the Mazda3. It boosts the compact sedan and hatch’s already lofty12:1 compression ratio to 13:1, courtesyof a new 4-2-1 exhaust manifold made possible by designing the engine andchassis at the same time.
The direct-injected engine makes thesame 155 horsepower as in the Mazda3,and peak torque is up 2 lb-ft, now at an even 150. The compression ratio bump isgood for more midrange torque around the 3000 rpm range -- important in the356- to-574-pound heavier crossover. And impressively, it does it all on 87-octanefuel.fuel.
Front-drive CX-5s can be had with a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. All-wheel-drive modelsare available only with the automatic.
All-wheel-drive models will take 9.3 seconds to reach 60 mph. Mazda alsotargeted 50 highway mpg with the manual transmission. Automatic, front-wheel-drive vehicles should achieve thesame city mileage and drop just onehighway km/litre.
Mazda officials were mum on whether the Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter diesel engine
be a a ab e ate t e C 5.will be available later in the CX-5.

The original Mazda5 that was intro-duced for the 2006 model year deliv-ered plenty of style, comfort for six people and exceptional fuel economy all wrapped up in a compact package. The newly updated 2012 edition prom-ises more of the same.
The Mazda5’s platform is based onthe same one that supports the Mazda3sedan/hatchback, except that it has beenstretched by 13 centimetres between thefront and rear wheels to accommodate three rows of seats. Interestingly, Mazda’smini minivan is actually a hair shorter than the Mazda3 sedan, which restricts the amount gear you can cram into the back when all three rows of seats are inuse. However the highly versatile interiorallows you to fold flat either or both of thesliding and reclining second-row buckets,or the 50:50 split folding rear bench to cre-ate the exact mix of passengers and cargo.
The Mazda5 now comes with a standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder powerplant that’salso employed in the Mazda3 and Mazda6 passenger cars as well as the CX-7 tall wagon. For its role in the Mazda5, the 2.5produces a peak 157 horsepower and 163pound-feet of torque, up from 153 horses and 148 pound-feet of torque that the out-go g .3 t e ge e ated.going 2.3-litre generated.
The Mazda5 continues to be the only vehicle in the minivan class that’s avail-able with a manual gearbox. A new six-speed unit is standard on base models, while a five-speed automatic is optional. Fuel economy is rated at 9.7 l/100 km inthe city and 6.8 km on the highway withthe manual gearbox. The base GS featuresthe usual air conditioning and power-oper-ated accessories, tilt and telescoping steer-ing wheel, six-speaker audio system, rain-se s g pe s a d 6 c a oy ee s.sensing wipers and 16-inch alloy wheels.

A continuously variable transmis-sion directs power to the front wheelsin four-cylinder units, while a six-speed automatic gets the nod when it comes to front- and four-wheel-drive Outlanders fitted with the V6.
Although it’s bigger than your typical sedan, the Outlander drives much like acar, especially since its underpinnings have been borrowed from the Lancer.Air conditioning, cruise control, keylessremote entry, six-speaker audio systemand power windows, locks and mirrorsand power windows, locks and mirrors

The Lancer is the volume leader of the Mitsubishi fleet and as such offers awide variety of modelsdesigned to satisfy nearlyevery taste and perfor-mance inclination, fromplain-Jane grocery hauler to all-out all-wheel-drive sports sedan that’s the basisfor the company’s rally-racing activities.
For the 2012 model year the Lancer offers a new SE AWD trim level with the sole aim of giving Canadians a fight-ing chance when running up against Old Man Winter. All-wheel-drive will be included on this model along with your choice of a five-speed manual, oroptional continuously variable transmis-sion (CVT).
Other features consist of heated frontseats and outside mirrors and added inte-rior/exterior trim pieces.
Otherwise, the rest of the Lancer line stands pat: the Subaru WRX-fighting Ralliart (sedan and hatchback); and theEvolution that dukes it out with the WRX STI derivative feature all-wheel-drive and turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinderengines. The i-MiEV hatchback joins the all-electric Nissan Leaf plus the gasoline-supported Chevrolet Volt as pioneers in the cleanenergy movement. However the Zero-emissions hatchback willbe one of the smallest electricalofferings to be mass-produced for general consumption.
As a short-haul urban commuter pod, it easily accommodates four adults as long as they’re packing light.
The i’s top speed is set at 130 km-h, but driving at that velocity for any length of time will quickly sap its 330-volt lithium-ion battery pack positioned beneath the passenger floor. The system flows powerto the 80-kilowatt (107-horsepower) elec-tric motor. The i’s range at about 155 kilo-metres per charge.
Piloting the i involves shifting the single-speed controller to one of threeoperating modes: “D” for optimum per-formance; “Eco” for maximum battery life; or “B” to maximize the amount ofregenerative breaking that replenishes the batteries more quickly and stretchesthe i’s effective range. A 240-volt home charging system requires about sixhours to top up the i, or 22.5-hours if youtap into a 120 volt outlet found in virtutap into a 120-volt outlet found in virtu-

Think of the RVR as being similar to the Outlander wagon instyle, but shorter by more than 35centimetres. From stem to stern, the design is cohesive and clean cut. It also works well with theLancer Evolution-style open-mouth nosepiece that Mitsubishi claims was inspired by jet-fighter air intakes.
Providing the thrust is a Lancer-based 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that makes148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmis-sion is fitted to the base ES front-wheel-drive models, while a continuously variable (CVT) unit is standard in both the two- and all-wheel-drive SE versions.Paddle shifters that control the six artifi-cial steps (designed to emulate the morefamiliar operation of a conventionalautomatic transmission) are part of theCVT package.
The RVR’s optional all-wheel-drive iscontrolled through a knob on the floor console. Under normal driving condi-tions, the vehicle remains in front-wheel-drive, but when tire slip is detected, upto 70 per cent of the engine’s torque canbe directed to the back wheels. The AWD unit can also be set to the “Lock” posi-tion that maintains a 60:40 torque splittion that maintains a 60:40 torque split
when the situation calls for maximumtraction from all four wheels. The base RVR includes a goodly assortment ofstandard features that will please mostbargain hunters. With a plethora of newcompact models that have recently cropped up in thepast year, the 2012 Corollacould find itself in a seri-ous dogfight. Fortunately, the compact Toyota, and the current record holder as theworld’s best-selling automotive brand, hasplenty of admirers and plenty of experi-ence at offering a solid product with a reputation for bulletproof reliability.
The current Corolla arrived for the 2009model year and received mid-cycle frontand rear styling makeover and a change in model designations for 2011. Threetrim levels - CE, S, and LE - come witha 132-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinderengine, while the XRS carries over witha 158-horsepower 2.4-litre I4. A five-speedmanual transmission is standard on all but the S trim, while a four-speed auto-matic is available on all but the XRS,which gets a five-speed automatic as an option. Base Corollas feature 15-inchsteel wheels, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, split-folding rear seat and a four-speaker audio system. For the 2012 model year, power door locks, remote keyless entry and an auto-down feature for the d e s s de po e do a e e pecteddriver’s side power window are expected
to migrate down from the mid-grade LE.That model retains its up-level six-speakerstereo with its USB port and Bluetooth wireless connectivity, which is good for hands-free phone operation. The sportierlooking S adds 16-inch alloy wheels, exte-rior body cladding, rear spoiler, fog lamps a d e o t seats.and firmer front seats.

Over its decade on sale in three separate editions, thePrius has proven to be oneof the most practical andcleanest ways to significant-ly reduce emissions and fueluse. The 2012 Prius familyhas expanded with a larger wagon, dubbed the Prius v, that’s aimed atgrowing “green” families. Next up will bea Plug-in Hybrid that can operate on bat-tery power alone for up to 20 kilometresand at speeds up to 100 km-h.
The smaller pack allows a full charge inonly three hours using a household plug or half that with a 240-volt outlet. The really good part is that once the batteryis drained, the car still acts like a regular Prius, meaning a fuel-economy rating of 3.7 l/100 km city and 4.0 highway.
The wagon’s utility is expanded for more rear legroom, shoulder room and more cargo space behind the rear seats. The v also offers some extra-clever storage in thecentre console and door pockets. Perhaps this is our first hybrid mini-minivan? All three Prii will have optional content lists chock full of technology and gadgets to make driving the hybrid more pleasurable, including a unique power moonroof/solar panel that runs an electric fan to cool intepanel that runs an electric fan to cool inte-

With rivals taking their toys and going home, the Toyota Tacoma remains just about theonly real option left if you’re notinterested in a full-size pickup truck, but are in need of decent utility. Despite its relative age,Toyota has unleashed a trickle ofupdates for 2012, including a very subtlereshaped grille and headlights, and new exterior mirrors.
Under the long hood rests either a base159-horsepower four-cylinder that coulduse an upgrade, or if towing/hauling is more of a concern, the Tacoma turns up the wick to the tune of 236 horsepower via the optional 4.0-litre V6.
Tacomas come in either extendedAccess-Cab and four-door Double-Cabmodels and your choice of rear-or four-wheel-drive for all. The box (available intwo lengths) floor and walls in all casesis made of composite plastic that obvi-ously won’t dent or rust. Up-level models also get a hose-out heavy-duty all-weather flooring and an available bedrail utility system of bins, dividers and two hooks lets you securely stow gear in back.
For 2012, the radio also gets upgraded with a larger 3.3-inch (8.4-centimetre)sc ee t at doub es as t e bac up cascreen that doubles as the backup cam-
era. Other carry-over options include a variety of TRD (Toyota Racing Development) packages that offer plenty in the way of dress-up along with practi-ca o oad equ p e t.cal off-road equipment.

Most car-based compact sport util-ity vehicles and all-wheel-drive tallwagons owe a debt of gratitude to the size-small RAV4. The fuel-efficient wagon’s affordable price and pump-snubbing fuel economy have keptit on many shoppers’ want lists for years. Dial in its available seven-passengerconfiguration (a rarity in this class) and you have a versatile, good-looking haulerthat maintains a steady grip on the roadwhen the going gets greasy.
Where the original RAV had a small four-cylinder engine, you can option the current model with a 269-horsepower3.5-litre V6. The standard engine is a 179-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder cou-pled to a four-speed automatic transmis-sion. The V6 uses a five-speed automatic. RAV4 is available in Base, Sport andLimited trim levels and each is availablein front- or four-wheel drive - no matterthe engine - the latter of which can be “locked” for severe use.
To help make the off-pavement journeysmore pleasant, the RAV4 can be ordered with hill-start assist to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward while traveling uphill, and downhill assist to prevent 4x4V6 models from getting away from thed e o a steep do g ade.driver on a steep downhill grade.
Standard equipment includes air con-ditioning, cruise control and the usualassortment of power and convenience features. An optional towing prep package provides a 680-kilogram capacity, while a Sport Appearance Package cleans up theoutside by deleting the liftgate-mountedspa e t e a ou o u ats.spare tire in favour of run-flats.

The 2012 edition is available in four-door sedan and hatchback formats and appears to be yet anothergame-changing model forHyundai.
The sedan’s newsheetmetal has a similar look to that of the mid-size Sonata and compact Elantra models, especiallythe deeply sculpted crease extending along the doors and fenders and ending with a hiked-up rear deck. The same is essentially true for the wagon-likehatchback, although its sweeping roofline, curvaceous liftgate anddominating tail lamps make it the most practical Accent and arguably the best looking of the two.
Both share the same platform that extends the distance between the front and rear wheels by nearly three inches over the previous model, which isimportant real estate for maxing out bothleg and knee room. In terms of stowage,Hyundai claims the hatchback bests all comers with the second-row in place.
The Accent’s 1.6-litre engine produces138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque, up from 110/106. The base four-doo t t e a ua gea bo c udesdoor L with the manual gearbox includes
just the basics plus a full suite of safety gear. Stepping up to the GL also gets youair conditioning, cruise control and theusual powered accessories, while the top-level GLS takes its full-load role seriously. Leather seats and navigation system are missing from the factory-installed optionlist, indicating that Hyundai is keeping the Accent’s trim levels as close to the bone as possible and in line with theco pet t o .competition.

Hyundai’s Californiadesign studio gets the creditfor creating the Elantra’s silhouette that was broughtto market for the 2011 modelyear. The stylists wereobviously pretty satisfiedwith their work on the 2011 Sonata since they clearly stuck to the samebasic pattern, albeit in a somewhat small-er scale. The swoops and swirls theme visible along the Elantra’s flanks and rear end also show up on the ultra-moderndashboard: it’s a genuine work of art.
What has also increased is the output. The Elantra’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder engineis smaller than the previous 2.0-litre unit, but the 1.8 puts out 148 horsepower a gain of 10 over the 2.0. It’s also about 34 kilo-grams lighter and is rated at 6.8 l/100 km in the city and a seriously impressive 4.9 l/100 km on the highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission (6.9/4.9with optional six-speed automatic). New for the 2012 model year is an ActiveECOsystem for automatic-equipped cars that basically updates the transmission shift programming and engine fuel mapping for claimed gains in fuel economy in theseven per cent range. Base Elantra Lmodels include the usual power operatedmodels include the usual power-operated

Stepping up to GL edition adds air conditioning, heated front seats and Bluetooth hands-free communications.Atop the lineup, the Limited provides anearly unlimited amount of content, such as leather seats (heated), power sunroof a d a auto d g ea e o .and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The Veloster is thereplacement for the Tiburon sport coupe that was phased outa few years ago. The key designelement is the well-camouflagedpassenger-side rear opening thatdoesn’t require the front door to be unlatched first. The interiorprovides seating for four passengers plus easy-to-read gauges and control-panel knobs for the driver.
The Veloster comes with an all-new138-horsepower 1.6-litre engine that’salso used in the sub-compact Accent. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while optional is asix-speed automated dual-clutchtransmission (DCT) that does awaywith the traditional torque converter. The DCT includes hillstart assist that helps prevent the Veloster from rolling backward when stopped onan incline. Specifying the DCT adds aselectable Active Eco mode that adjusts the computer-regulated engine and transmission mapping to maximize fueleconomy.

The Sonata’s bold look is unmistak-able, which is a good thing in thisclass. And unlike all the competitors, the Sonata doesn’t offer a V6. The base engine is a 198-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder (200 horses with the optional dual exhaust), or formore power there’s a 274-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. As well, the all-new Sonata Hybrid operates with a 169-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder connected to a 30-kilowatt (40-horsepower)electric motor for a net output of 209 horsepower. The Hybrid’s other criticalingredient is the first-time use of a 270-volt lithium-polymer battery that helps the car reach speeds up to 100 km-h onelectric power alone, topping its direct competitors.
The vehicle’s 5.5 l/100 km city and 4.6highway is also at the top of the class. The base 2.4 is connected to a six-speed manualtransmission, or optional six-speed auto-matic, while both the turbocharged engineand the Hybrid employ only six-speed automatics. Base GL Sonatas include theusual power-operated controls plus air conditioning, tilt and telescoping steer-ing wheel, Bluetooth short-range wirelessnetworking and keyless push-button start.

Even though by modernstandards the Forte sedan is approaching mid-life, there’s no crisis for Kia. For those who need more flexibility hauling bulky objects, the five-door hatchback shouldbe an easy choice. To betterdistinguish it from the sedan, the Forte5 hatchback gets a different grille, alloywheels, lower valence design and centre console. Both models share a logicallyconfigured dashboard/control panel with its minimum of dials and switches.
The Forte’s platform provides a reason-ably agile behind-the-wheel experience. This is especially true of the Forte SX thatpossesses a sport-tuned suspension pluslarger-than-standard front brake rotors for added stopping power.
The Forte starts with a 156-horse-power 2.0-litre four-cylinder in base LXand mid-range EX trims. Opting for themore performance-minded SX gets youa 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder.Both engines use either six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmis-sions. Choosing the automatic also brings steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for extra control.
The LX is pretty basic, but does proThe LX is pretty basic, but does pro-
vide a four-speaker audio system with anauxiliary USB computer port for exter-nal music players such as Apple’s iPod. EX and SX models add air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, power windows and door locks plus steer-ing-wheel audio controls for the upgradedsix speaker audio package.six-speaker audio package.
Type: Four-door, front-wheel-drivecompact sedan/hatchbackBase engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4(156) Optional engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4(173) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-driveTransmissions: six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt., std. on five-door)l/100 km (city/hwy): 8.1/5.7 (2.0, MT)Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lockbrakes; traction control; stability controlWeight (kg): 1,240
It’s hard to be a stand-out in a vehicle line asattractive as Kia’s, butthe Optima’s chiseledEuropean lines are hardto ignore. The whole linelooks even better thanksto standard front fog lightsand new LED taillights on mid-line mod-els.
The Optima shares the related HyundaiSonata’s range of powerful four-cylinderengines: the entry-level is a 2.4-litre unit that produces a very healthy 200 horse-power, while an optional turbocharged274-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinderengine will sate your desire for speed. There’s also a gasoline-electric version of the 2.4 that produces a net 206 horse-power.
As you might expect, the hybrid is themost fuel efficient (5.6 l/100 km city and4.9 highway) but even the base engine produces a respectable 8.7 l/100 km in the city and 5.7 on the highway. Mostinteresting is that the hybrid systemuses never-before-employed lithium-polymer batteries that are lightweight and can actually be formed into shapes. The Hybrid can travel at speeds up to 100
t out t e gas e g e ass st g.km-h without the gas engine assisting.
Kia’s reputation was built on value, and the Optima is no different.
Optima won the overall Motoring TVCar of the Year, the first-ever manufac-turer back-to-back win for the presti-gious title, and Motoring 21012 Best New
a y Ca .Family Car.

Only a year into the Sorento’snew lease on life as an urbanizedbig wagon, Kia is making some significant changes to broadenits appeal. It remains a stylish, comfortable machine thattakes its highway-cruising roleseriously, regardless of weatheror road status.
The 2012 edition, available in front- or all-wheel-drive, also offers a split-folding third-row-seating option forfolks needing to transport up to seven passengers.
Buyers can choose between a new base 191-horsepower direct-injectionversion of the four-banger (replacing the previous 175-horsepower I4) and anoptional 276-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. Allthree are closely matched in terms of fuel economy, although the new direct-injection engine does hit 9.5 l/100 km onthe highway.
A six-speed automatic is now thesole transmission available, while all-wheel-drive is available with either engine. Standard features include airconditioning, tilt and telescopic steering column and steering-wheel-locatedaudio controls.
o g t t e auto at cAlong with the automatic
transmission, the LX includes afew extra touches, including a newantibacterial and anti-stain seat treatment, while the EX adds dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable driver’s seat, push-button-start ignition, backup warning and 18-inch alloy

The all-new Rio sedan and Rio 5-Door hatchback bear little resem-blance to their predecessors. The sheetmetal on the Rio and Rio 5-Doorhatchback is now much more pleas-ing, especially the slinkier hatchedition that features its own grille, bumper and, of course, rear deck. The dashboard layout is also attractively shaped, clearly presented and, due to areduction of hard plastic surfaces, is far richer looking than in past Rios. The airconditioning, rear-window heat and ven-tilation toggle switches are a particularly nice touch.
The new standard 1.6-litre four-cylinder produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque, a gain of 28 horses and 16 pound-feet of torque, compared to the outgoing 1.6, which is significant on a 1,100-kilogram vehicle. The lighter (by 13 kilograms) engine is connected to a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic. The engine is avail-able with what Kia calls Idle Stop and Go (ISG). This optional automatic-trans-mission-only feature shuts off the engine after the Rio comes to a complete stop, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released. The ISG is part of a opt o a co y a cs ac age t atan optional Eco Dynamics Package that
includes a special alternator that disen-gages under high engine load for reduced power loss and improved fuel economy.Kia claims overall fuel consumption is reduced by about three per cent. That’sonly a slight decrease, but every little bit helps and the Rio’s 6.6 l/100 km cityand 4.9 highway ratings are a no-contestimprovement.
The all-new Rio won the Motoring 2012 est S a Ca u de $ ,000.Best Small Car under $21,000.
