Record Turnout for 2nd Annual Toy Run

By: Michelle White

On Sunday, July 04, 2004, our club, the local motorcycle club, the Salvation Army and CKVO joined forces to host the 2nd

As the end of another cruisin’ season quickly moves upon us, I am sure everyone is like me and feels sorry that our summer is drawing to a close! There are always too many car related activities for too few weekends in our short summer season. But on a positive note, this summer unfolded to become quite an enjoyable one, with the weather cooperating continuously.

There always seemed to be some attraction happening to fill in any spare time one might have! I am sure we all have some interesting things in mind now to work at or polish up during the long months that we all know are approaching.

Another great season of cruising is now well underway and so far Harold and I have managed to take in a few of the auto shows around the island. We took part in our club’s auto show in June. We had a great time and many compliments were received from both participants and spectators. A separate story about our show is included in this newsletter.

On the July 31 weekend, we put the top down in Shoal Harbour and drove across the island to Rocky Harbour. What a great drive! After a few sunny days driving around Gros Morne, we drove on to Corner Brook to take part in the Western Newfoundland Show ‘n Shine. Saturday ‘s showing took place under cloudy skies but rain dampened the show on Sunday. We still had a great time though.

On July 4, we joined fellow auto and motorcycle enthusiasts for the 2nd

Annual Big Boys for Little Toys Fun Run. This event is only two years old

On another note, I would like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that I will be out of the province for the next three months or so. Unfortunately, I will be missing the upcoming meetings, but I have great confidence that the Club members will handle the things that need to be done. I can still be reached at CarKrazi@ Hotmail.com.

I wish everyone the best of luck in whatever endeavors they take on. I will see everyone in November or December. Have an enjoyable autumn. Sincerely, Glenda

and is growing at a fantastic rate. What a great turnout of both vehicles and donations!

We have also joined with some fellow club members for a few Thursday night cruises. With all of the road construction in Clarenville this year, it is very difficult to get around the area.Hopefully we can all get together for a cruise or two once the roads are completed.

I am still looking for your input to this newsletter. Do you enjoy it? I really want to make this something you looks forward to. So please, forward your comments. Let me know how you feel about it. A simple thumbs up or thumbs down would be greatly appreciated.

Remember, this newsletter can only succeed if you help. So if you have anything that may be of interest to others, please feel free to pass it along. It is your contributions that make it interesting and informative.

Along the route, new and gently used toys were collected for under-privileged children. At the end of the Run, participants gathered at the Bill Davis Chalet in Elizabeth Swan Park, Clarenville for barbequed steak, fried mushrooms & onions, baked potato and vanilla & chocolate cake.

Prior to the actual run, collection boxes were set up at Random Square Mall, Dalfen’s Mall, North Atlantic Refinery, and at area churches and fire departments. As a result of these collection boxes and the donations received during the Toy Run, over 700 toys were presented to the Salvation Army for distribution to under-privileged children.

The event was deemed a huge success and organizers are planning for next year’s Big Boys for Little Toys Fun Run.

Photos of the winning vehicles as well as a few other snaps are displayed on the following page.

Start making plans for next year’s show and mark June 11 – 12, 2005 on your calendar.

Next year is Wheels of Summer 10th Anniversary and we are hoping to make it our biggest and best yet!

Come and help us celebrate this milestone!

A barbeque and dance was held for participants at the Bill Davis Chalet on Saturday night. Fabulous food, magnificent music and fantastic friends – a simple but successful recipe for a great time.

At this social, each participant was identified and was personally presented with a participant’s plaque by Club President, Glenda Humby. This year’s plaque, a tire on a highway, exemplified the show’s theme – “We Rolled Into Wheels of Summer Auto Show 2004”.

A special thank you must be extended to Glenda for

making each of the Participant’s Plaques. Great job.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to come up with unique and interesting show themes and plaques but thanks to some very creative individuals; we always seem to come up with a success each year. Already, ideas are being developed for next year’s show.

Thanks to the many major and minor sponsors of our show, we were able to award a variety of prizes and provide first-rate service to both show-goers and participants.

Just a few snaps of our Thursday night cruises!

Social News

By: Glenda Humby

This summer was quite a busy one for anyone involved in the antique auto hobby! Lots of things to do and lots of great weather to keep everyone satisfied in a very busy schedule.

For anyone who took advantage of the glorious weather, there was always something to do…From local car shows in late May and early June and continuing on thru July and August. Because many events took place on the same weekends, not everyone could all of the activities that they wanted to!

The summer shows began in St. John’s with Cruisin’ 2004 in mid May. Bay Wheels followed two weeks later on the last weekend of May….both shows were well attended with a lot of spectators viewing the vehicles.

In June, Our Show and Southern Classics in Marystown were two of the main events. These shows also seemed to come off as major successes. One note this year… It seems that each show had a record number of ‘never seen before in this arena’ vehicles on display, which is always a tremendous draw for the public!

Placentia also hosted its first annual auto show in June. They had a good turnout considering the poor weather but are looking forward to making next years show a bigger and better event.

July started off with a bang with the Big Boys for Little Toys Fun Run. An excellent turnout and a record number of toys were collected….approximately 700!!!It was a great day, a very scenic route and an excellent meal at the end of the run….What a way to raise donations for a very worthwhile cause!

July month continued on with many activities in all parts of the Island…Gander Festival of Flight, Squid Festival, Carbonear Show, Marble Mountain Show and Shine and many, many others!

August tends to be a little slower month for shows, with the Bowring Park Show being one of the major attractions. There are also numerous other shows that go on in all areas of the province that we have no way of knowing about them all!

But all over all, this summer has given us lots of interesting events and lots of good weather for us to get out and enjoy our Antique Vehicles!!
