The POET is seated at his writing table with a bottle and
glass of Hendrick's gin. He is surrounded by books, plants,
and cats. Despite his calm surroundings, there is a subdued
sense of frustration and frenetic energy. He starts to write
and then stops, several times. He flips through a few books,
holds and strokes a cat, then eventually sits again.

My eyes are attracted to so few smiles these days, gleaming in these murky depths,
I have been forced to learn to kiss without warning and with great abandon.
The DANCERS exit as the lights come up on the POET.
He has changed clothes also and is wearing a little less than
before. There are more flowers among his plants now, and
he waters them with aection as the MUSE sings.

they will be happy and content and warm;
I like that, the way a cat eyes you suspiciously and keeps its distance.

The lights slowly fade on the POET and MUSE, both of
whom are sated and spent. The DANCERS however, resume
their coupling. Their movement slows down as their bodies
become impossible to tell apart, and the lights very slowly fade out

I remember teachers illustrating Einstein to be a genius by
the fact that he would forget to wear sox, or would wear
sox that didn't match,
and I thought, even then, that just the fact that these ridiculous
nits would bother to make note of whether a person wore
sox, or unmatched sox, perfectly illustrates why they are
not geniuses.
Lights up on the POET and MUSE. While they are not in the same space, they
are trading stories as if they were having a late night face to face with drinks.
Fourth Exchange: Two Nooses
I remember my mother taking me to purchase my first
athletic supporter.
"Small." she told the salesman. And I countermanded, bodly,
"Large."
We got the small. It fit just fine.
I remember my brother making a deal with me, that if I
would let him do it to me, he would let me do it to
him.
Well, I did, and he didn't.
Now he's married, with kids,
and I'm embarrassed to ask ...
I remember when my friend Karen's husband had just left her, after
forty years.
"You don't know what it's like," she admonished me;
"No," I conceded, "and you don't
know what it's like to be left by forty husbands."
Innocence can only be donned by a
soul who has tried everything.
The MUSE, never at a loss for words, is silent
I should brush my teeth.
The POET stands up, goes to the sink and splashes some water on his face

When I truly think of you I realize that I don't
have a clue who you really are - do you smoke, do
you drink to excess, do you show kindness to strangers?
When I am sick will you nurse me with joy;
when you are sick will you allow yourself to be coddled?
Are you good with the non-theoreticals? Is there blood
behind your honed words?

Nobody ever told me it's fun growing old,
to laugh at the years and watch time unfold,
life is a mirror which riddles the truth:
age is but an excess of youth!
The Poet can sense his sadness and fear. His tone
therefore softens a bit, but his sentiment is the same.
pizz. arco
The MUSE raises his head. There is desperation in his voice
Angelic forms are cruel at best,
our hearts to slay and minds arrest,
while souls are captured, bound and gagged,
as ever we play this mortal tag.

For the first time in the entire piece, the POET and the MUSE
look at each other, They freeze as the world around them melts
away with the falling rain until there is nothing left around them
but beautiful, empty space. The DANCERS enter and guide the
POET and MUSE very close to one another. While the two of
them are still locked in each other's gaze.

Once they are both naked, the dancers exit.

The POET and MUSE stand transfixed and glorious
in each other's presence. They move closer still, and as
they almost make contact, the lights BLACK OUT.
