When Judy Garland’s Dorothy declared ‘we’re not in Kansas anymore’, she couldn’t have known that she was redefining a classic; or that La Boite would team up with The Danger

Ensemble and the Brisbane Festival to completely remake L. Frank Baum’s brilliant story and bring the wonderful

Wizard of Oz screaming into the 21st century.

Classics sit at the heart of this season. Holding the Man - in which Dorothy makes a guest appearance - is one of

Australia’s great love stories. It has played around the world. But now we’ve assembled a new all-Queensland cast to

breathe fresh life into the original production, a classic of the recent Australian theatre.

Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie is one of the most loved plays of the American theatre – a gorgeous heart-

breaker if ever there was one – but we have a hunch there’s a lot more to it and are keen to dust it off in a way that

will give it a surprising new glow.

Classics can be turned new, and the new can become classics. Food is a new play that sits on the La Boite menu along with Blue Love (2009), Stockholm (2010) and Tender

Napalm (2012) as pieces in which dance and movement provide stunning new dimensions. Kate Champion’s dance

theatre work is beautifully human, and her influence helps transform Steve Rodgers’ generous story into a

delicious theatre experience.

We wanted a new work for kids too, so we’ve teamed up with shake & stir theatre co to create

Out Damn Snot. It finds inspiration in the classics – Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream – but all you really need to

know is that it’s set in a vast pool of green slime.

Kate Champion’s Force Majeure is a ground-breaker in dance theatre and Belvoir is one of Australia’s great theatre companies.

La Boite Indie is our platform for independent theatre in Brisbane - theatre made by artists

coming together, often with few resources, to create work they passionately believe in.

La Boite chips in with a reconfigured 100-seat theatre space, as well as financial, production,

marketing and artistic support.

Over the last three years, this has been our way of nurturing a sustainable independent theatre culture in Brisbane, cultivating new

audiences across the city, enabling closer ties between independent practice and

La Boite, and helping create outstanding theatre made with passion and rigour.

In 2013 we’ll be doing it better, with QPAC joining Brisbane Airport

Corporation in support of this vision.

In the urban surrounds of the Kelvin Grove Village, solo audience members embark on a journey into an imagined world called Capital City. Armed with a supplied mobile phone, you are charged by city officials to investigate the myths and locals of the city.

You are steered through Capital City by phone calls, flags and other unexpected trigger points. Here lies a community with something to hide. The locals tell one story, the city officials another, and the city itself keeps secrets of its own. At the end of your quest, on the city’s outskirts, you will be asked to take allegiance with one side. Keep a quick wit and focussed eye, for in Capital City, anything can happen.

The Séance is an intimate performance encounter for a circle of people who wish to make contact with the ghost of a deceased

Our personal technologies have become an extension of ourselves. Blindscape looks to exploit that connection to engage its audience in a visceral environment that collapses real and imagined boundaries.

Using a provided iPhone, pre-loaded with the specially designed Blindscape App, you enter the virtual world as you enter the performance space. The Blindscape App is a 3D audio-virtual reality. Coloured in by an unseen hand, perception and reality fold over as you explore corridors, doorways and landscapes – four unique stages of discovery moving to a final place of reflection. The light from your phone helps you to view fragments of circus which are spectacular but elusive, in this rare performance experience.

Not-Nick makes money from people who are genuinely in love with him. In a conversation with Tim Spencer, the male sex worker (portrayed by Charles Purcell) tells us about his work, his family and his love life.

This scripted interview is an alluring study of integrity and play acting, made volatile by the rules of theatre. The men gently pry into each other’s lives and discover the sheer pleasure of generosity and candour. Widely held assumptions about sex work and theatre set up invisible cultural collisions between the two men, but if there is nothing risked, there is nothing gained.

The Festival of Australian Student Theatre is a fantastic national event and La Boite is proud to be its host.

Since 2010, participating institutions have included the University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, University of Queensland, Australian National University, University of NSW, James Cook University, La Trobe University, Southbank Institute of Technology, Griffith University and of course QUT, among others. In 2012, FAST was invited to participate in the UK’s National Student Drama Festival, rebadged that year as the International Student Drama Festival with the London Olympics.

Our Ambassadors Program is a year-long opportunity for almost 200 high school and tertiary students from across Brisbane and beyond. Ambassadors attend all productions for free, meet with

creative teams, enjoy free workshops throughout year, learn about La Boite programs, and take a leadership role in introducing the

work of La Boite to their peers, schools, and families.

Internships We offer internships in a wide range of activities, from direction,

design and stage management to marketing.

All of our shows are suitable for high school students of different ages - and we make it easy and affordable to bring

groups to the theatre. Teachers can preview the work for free, and we also provide resource notes and opportunities

to meet the artists and discuss the shows.

Take a Workshop We have a large menu of workshops on curriculum-based

topics that we can deliver at your school. Our best artists will come to your classroom to inspire and

energise your students.

Professional Development Workshops for Teachers Our show-related workshops will invigorate your practise in the classroom. Pick a topic that fascinates or confounds you

and learn from leading theatre practitioners.

aCCESS FaCILITIES Staff Assisted Access For mobility assistance of any kind, we suggest you advise us when booking your tickets so we can organise a Front of House attendant to assist you.

Unassisted Access Spaces are available for wheelchairs in the theatre and there is a level access drop-off point next to the theatre in Gona Parade. Patrons with special mobility requirements should request access seats when booking tickets.

For hearing impaired patrons, there is a hearing assistance system in the theatre. We request patrons wishing to use this service contact us prior to their visit, as special seats are required.

There is an accessible toilet located on the ground floor, 10m from the theatre entrance doors.

BarThe Dancing Bean Espresso Bar, adjacent to the Box Office, is fully licenced and open 1hr before all Mainstage shows. Light refreshments are available.
