MASTERING YOUR CIRCUMSTANCESBEFORE THEY MASTER YOU

    (Lesson 1)

PURPOSE: TO TEACH MY YOUTH HOW TO DEAL WITH THE TRIALS THEY

    FACE.

OBJECTIVE: BY THE END OF THIS SERIES MY YOUTH SHOULD BE VIEWIN!THEIR TRIALS FROM A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE AND REACTIN! IN ABIBLICAL WAY.

    PERSONAL NOTE (Co"#$ %e "se$ &s '& o* +no$",+on es'e,+#- +n ,ones o* /+e*):

I didnt write these lessons from an ivory tower. I wrote them while caring for my dear 37-year-oldwife as she fought cancer. We had been on the mission field for a year when doctors found thecancer, forcing us to return to the States and fight cancer for the next four years. t the time, ourfour boys were !, ", and #-month-old twins. few months after com$leting this series, the %ord

too& her home. In most situations li&e this, grieving hearts scream 'Why()* With such a need formissionaries, why would +od call someone to dro$ everything and go, only to call him bac& afterone year( nd while many abusive $arents live long, healthy lives, why would e ta&e one whodaily showered her children with love. So I &now firsthand something about living with grief, sorrow, and unanswered uestions. I also &now firsthand about the very real comfort that esuscan bring in the midst of it all. So, these messages were written from one suffering heart to othersuffering hearts, letting you in on where I found the comfort and $eace to carry on.FOR THE TEACHER:

s always, ta&e the time to ma&e the message your own. When I teach this series, I illustrate manyof the $oints with my own life, rather than the lives of others. /efore you let my ideas influenceyou, 0ot down your own ideas on &ee$ing your 0oy during hard times. 1eflect dee$ly on what you

have $ersonally gone through. ow have these difficulties made you a better $erson, enhancedyour ministry, hel$ed you identify with others( What biblical $rinci$les ministered to you as youfaced these difficulties( What Scri$tures come to mind that hel$ you ma&e sense of it all( Some$eo$le become bitter through their trials. 2thers become better. What ma&es the difference(Who are some $eo$le you &now who demonstrate these $rinci$les(

    INTRODUCTION

Is your ha$$iness totally ruled by your circumstances( ou &now, if your family is getting along, your friends all li&e you, and your grades are fantastic, youre on to$ of the world. /ut if the nextday you wa&e u$ to the sound of your $arents fighting, loo& in the mirror and find a huge $im$leon the middle of your forehead, go to school and your friends all laugh and call you 4yclo$s, then

your emotions go to the $its. 5ost live on this emotional roller coaster, unable to find 0oy or $eacewhen circumstances turn sour.

/ut in a world where most students cant handle hard times, those who find 0oy even when thingsgo wrong cant be ignored.

ILLUSTRATION: Steve, a tenth grader, went on a ski retreat, mainly because a girl he likedwas going. It was a horrible day for skiing. The ski report called it a hard, granular surface, which meant that most of the snow had melted during the warm days, froen back at night,

    6

    2/57

leaving a slope of hard, lumpy ice. The horrible conditions, plus the fact that none of the peoplewere e!perienced skiers, made for a terribly frustrating day. "ore skiers were on their rearends than on their skis. #ut in the midst of the contorted bodies lying on the slope, Steveobserved a fellow named $on who seemed different. %lthough $on, too, spent most of the day onhis rear, he seemed to have a &oy and peace that set him apart, as if his &oy didn't come from hiscircumstances. That evening, $on spoke about (ohn )*:)*, telling how (esus came to give us an

abundant life. Steve knew that $on had something he was missing, and that night knelt by hisbed and surrendered his life to +hrist.

Would you li&e to have a life li&e 1ons, that ma&es $eo$le wonder, 'ow does he do it(,* whenthey see you handle adversity( Would you li&e to get off the emotional roller coaster and find a 0oythat will stic& with you, even during your dar&est days(

2ver the coming wee&s we will search +ods word for answers to 'ow o 5aster our4ircumstances, /efore hey 5aster ou.* nd we will illustrate +ods answers with the lives ofreal $eo$le, including a $rofessional athlete who lost his $itching arm to cancer, a brilliantastro$hysicist who co$es with a cri$$ling disease, an active teenager who became a uadri$legic, and some who survived itlers concentration cam$s.

s we begin, $ray silently that +od will s$ea& to you about how to handle the trials you listed.

his was no wim$ who wrote this. It was the a$ostle 9aul, a s$iritual ames /ond whos$o&e the truth boldly, whether he ris&ed beating, im$risonment or death. /ut when hethought of those of his race who re0ected 4hrist, it tore him u$ emotionally. nd he wasnt

afraid to ex$ress it. Its healthy to grieve at times in our life. Its also healthy to tell lovedones what you are feeling. hose who bottle u$ their emotions sometimes regret it later.

1emember, if esus we$t o$enly, then none of us should hesitate to ex$ress our sorrow, thin&ing it is uns$iritual, unmanly, or uncool. /ut its one thing to ex$ress emotions anduite another to be ruled by them.

So, when I tal& about mastering our circumstances, Im not tal&ing about hiding your hurts or

    never feeling down. I amsaying that, li&e the $ostle 9aul, we can face $ersecution, $hysical $ain,betrayal, and even undeserved im$risonment with a dee$ $eace and 0oy that no one can ta&e away.
