research @ KRDB• The research carried on in the KRDB centre is organised in

four main scientific areas:

• Conceptual and Cognitive Modelling (CORE, lead by prof. Giancarlo Guizzardi),

• Intelligent Integration and Access to Data (In2Data, lead by prof. Diego Calvanese),

• Process-aware Information Systems Management (PRISM, lead by prof. Marco Montali),

• Foundations of Database Technologies (FDT, lead by prof. Werner Nutt).

Page 13: where is Bozen-Bolzano? · Data Visualization and Exploration 6 Formal Verification of Software and Systems 6 Semantic Technologies 12 Semantic Technologies 8 Seminars in Data and

research @ CORE• Conceptual and Cognitive Modelling Research Group

• develop theoretical foundations and engineering tools to support the representation of conceptualizations of reality (i.e., conceptual models) that are both:

1. ontologically and cognitively adequate and truthful to the phenomena being represented;

2. pragmatic and efficient for supporting human as well as artificial agents in tasks such as domain learning and understanding, semantic interoperability, problem-solving and meaning negotiation.

Page 14: where is Bozen-Bolzano? · Data Visualization and Exploration 6 Formal Verification of Software and Systems 6 Semantic Technologies 12 Semantic Technologies 8 Seminars in Data and

research @ FDT• Foundations of Database Technologies

• the foundations of data management systems come in two flavours:

1. on the one hand there are formal theories based on areas such as logic, discrete mathematics, and probability theory.

2. on the other hand, researchers have developed a wealth of technologies to store, access and manipulate large amounts of information.

Page 15: where is Bozen-Bolzano? · Data Visualization and Exploration 6 Formal Verification of Software and Systems 6 Semantic Technologies 12 Semantic Technologies 8 Seminars in Data and

research @ In2data• Intelligent Integration and Access to Data

• investigate foundational, methodological, experimental, and application oriented aspects of access to structured and semi-structured data and information by leveraging its formal semantics:

1. combine techniques developed in the area of ontologies in knowledge representation, with industrial technologies for the efficient management of large amounts of data;

2. develop novel technologies and tools that enable both domain experts (engineers, managers, ...) and IT specialists to deal with the increasing complexity of data and information.

Page 16: where is Bozen-Bolzano? · Data Visualization and Exploration 6 Formal Verification of Software and Systems 6 Semantic Technologies 12 Semantic Technologies 8 Seminars in Data and

research @ PRISM• Process-aware Information Systems Management

• investigates foundational, methodological, and experimental aspects of process-aware information systems, with emphasis on the integration of business process and data management:

1. combine artificial intelligence, computational logics and formal methods to data science and semantic technologies in order to provide IT support to business and technical experts along the entire process lifecycle, and to enrich data with dynamics;

2. develop intelligent technologies supporting the flexible and adaptive management of organizations and their processes.
