In 1834, the founders of Haverford College hiredan English gardener, William Carvill, to design acampus on what was then farmland. His original

plan and tree list is in Magill Library’s Special Collections.By 1900, a group of students, faculty and alumni ledby Edward Woolman, Class of 1893, recognized theneed to preserve the landscape and care for the trees.The Haverford College Arboretum continues thiswork today with the assistance of alumni and friends.Each fall, we welcome new Haverfordians with thegift of a Freshman Tree during Customs Week. Graduateshave planted trees at Commencement and returningclasses have done the same during Alumni Weekend.

Sometimes a tree is removed or relocated because of constructionprojects, or it grows poorly and dies. Whenever possible, the Arboretum staff replants a similar tree in a nearby location.
