Phoenix is a publicly accredited, non-profit, private Alberta school that specializes in home
schooling programs. We offer four program choices to families - Kindergarten, School-Directed,
Home Education and Blended from kindergarten through grade 12.
We are not a designated special needs school and as such do not provide
specific programs for students on either end of the learning spectrum.
Our mission is to provide unique learning opportunities for families so
that each young person may develop into a life-long learner and
responsible global citizen.
We offer hundreds of great home schooling classes each year. Classes are open to all families
whether they are registered with Phoenix as their school board or not. These classes should be
considered resources, the same as a book or CD and may not cover all the Alberta Programs of
Study Learning Outcomes in any one class.
Each educational program can be customized to
suit your child's needs, learning styles and the 21st
century environment!
We are accepting rescue
students!
“Learning opportunities must shift from an emphasis on content to an emphasis on process."
~ Alberta Education, Dec 2008
Q. What benefits are there to being a registered student of
Phoenix?
Registered Phoenix Students and their families receive a 20% DISCOUNT OFF all
workshops, camps and events. This discount does not apply to fieldtrips or outside
services such as guest speakers or theatre groups. To get these great discounts, you
must be registered with us prior to September 30 in either a home education, blended
or school directed program.

A little magic can take you a long way. When James Henry
Trotter accidentally drops some magic crystals by the old
peach tree, strange things start to happen. The peach at the
top of the tree begins to grow, and before long it's as big as a
house. Then James discovers a secret entranceway into the
fruit, and when he crawls inside, he meets a bunch of
marvelous oversized friends -- Old Green-Grasshopper,

Difficulty varies so students can challenge themselves.
(DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION)

NOT AN ALLERGEN-FREE ZONE!
There are many causes of anaphylaxis reaction including nuts, fruits, milk and medication. Phoenix CANNOT in any way guarantee that the Centre is allergen free.
We ask that people be aware and do not bring common causes of anaphylaxis to the centre. Depending on their age, anyone with a anaphylaxis allergy must either keep their epi-pen on their person or have their parent on-site with them at all time.
What are the common causes of anaphylaxis? Amongst the commoner causes of anaphylaxis are:
Foods: especially nuts, some kinds of fruit, fish and less commonly spices
Drugs: Especially penicillins, anaesthetic drugs, some intravenous infusion liquids, and things injected during x-rays. Aspirin and other painkillers (called NSAIDs) can produce very similar reactions.
Latex: mainly in rubber latex gloves, catheters, other medical products, but also in many things encountered in daily life. Sufferers are nearly always health care workers, mainly nurses, or have other occupational contact with latex. They may get anaphylaxis from bananas, avocados, kiwi fruit, figs, or other fruits and vegetables including even potatoes and tomatoes.
Bee or wasp (yellow jacket) stings when these cause faintness, difficulty in breathing, or rash or swelling of a part of the body which has not been stung. If you just get a very large swelling of the part of your body which was stung, you are probably not going to have anaphylaxis if stung again.
Unknown: A substantial proportion of sufferers have no cause found despite all efforts, even in the most expert clinics.
Exercise may precipitate such reactions in some ('exercise-induced anaphylaxis'), and so may exercise after food, sometimes apparently irrespective of what the food is, but in other people after specific foods. This is called 'exercise-induced food-dependent anaphylaxis'.
Medicines called beta blockers used for heart disease or high blood pressure can change mild reactions from another cause into severe anaphylaxis because they block the body's main defense against anaphylaxis.
Wrong diagnosis of anaphylaxis: a proportion (about 10%) of people sent to specialists with a diagnosis of anaphylaxis have a mistaken diagnosis and have not had anaphylaxis. If this might be true in your case, it is well worth finding this out as you may be spared unnecessary fear and wrong treatment.
PLEASE BE SAFE AND COURTEOUS OF OTHERS!

Other Important Things You Should Know . . .
KINDER KIDS - Please note that if your child is enrolled in the “Phoenix Kindergarten Program” there is NO
CHARGE for regular kinder classes. If you are uncertain, please ask a staff member before you register your child
for that class/event. Kinder parents are required to be their child’s aide for any class they attend or to designate a
responsible adult for the child.
CURRICULUM BASED – All our classes are curriculum based. An objective sheet is available for each class with
exception of kinder classes. (Kinder learning objectives are emailed out at the beginning of the year to registered
families.)
SIBLINGS – Siblings ages 0-3 are welcome in most classes and on fieldtrips. However, if materials, handouts or
supplies are used by the sibling, the class fee will be charged. Further, if siblings are disruptive, we ask parents to
either not bring them or to leave the class area so as to not disturb other participants.
RISKS - Parents assume all responsibility and risk for themselves and their children while participating in any
Phoenix activity.
PHOTOS - During events, Phoenix staff may be taking photos for use on the web site and in other promotional
materials. Registration in the event grants Phoenix permission to use these photos, which may include you and your
children, in such a manner.
REFUNDS / CANCELLATIONS - Class fees are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled by Phoenix. This
class schedule is subject to change; please make sure you check our website for up-to-date information and
complete registration details - www.phoenixfoundation.ca Friday at 4:00 PM is the cut-off time for
registrations for the next week.
RESTRICTIONS - Participants in any PHOENIX sponsored functions, field trips, events, classes or programs agree
to follow the Code of Conduct as outlined below. As such, Phoenix reserves the right to deny future access to any
events, functions, fieldtrips, or programs if this code is violated by a participant or parent.
1. Participants are required to be within the age and other guidelines set for the event unless otherwise
specified; to be registered; and to have paid the appropriate fee in advance of the event or class.
2. Participants are required to be on time, dress appropriately and participate fully in any PHOENIX function,
field trip, event or program.
3. The possession of drugs, alcohol, tobacco and/or weapons is strictly prohibited and intentionally
destructive behavior as such hitting others, spitting, swearing and willful destruction of other’s property will not
be tolerated.
4. Parents are responsible for their children’s behavior at all times and will be asked to correct a child’s
behavior if PHOENIX deems it to be inappropriate or they will be asked to leave if a child continues to be rude
or disruptive or damages the venue’s property or fails to adhere to the venue’s rules and procedures.
5. Participants are required to notify PHOENIX if they are for any reason unable to attend a function, field
trip, event or program. This is so that the venue can be notified and the spot opened to another participant.

Parent’s Role at Phoenix
You are responsible for:
The care and custody of your children at all times (when children are registered in a class, parents may
leave the centre as long as we have a cell phone number for you. Please be advised we do not provide
babysitting services at break or lunch times.)
Your child’s behavior at all times. Parents may be asked to remove a child if they are disruptive, rude or
disrespectful to the learning coach, instructor or others.
The repair or replacement of any damaged property.
Providing support, encouragement and fulfilling the obligations of your child's program.
FURTHER
You should:
Advise the school of special circumstances or changes in regular routines;
Advise your learning coach and instructors of any allergies, learning disabilities or medical conditions;
Keep sick children at home;
Ensure that other siblings are not disruptive to classes or other people;
Assist in classes and at events as need be;
Assist in the set-up, cleaning and take-down of classrooms;
Join the Yahoo site - this is how we communicate changes!
If there is a problem in a class
The instructor will make your child aware of the problem or issue and indicate what they should be
doing differently. They will be given one additional warning.
After that, as you, the parent are the primary teacher, your assistance will be required. Your child may
continue to participate in the class under your supervision if appropriate. If you are not on-site, you will
be called and expected to return to the centre immediately to assist your child. (Remember to sign out
if you go off-site!)
If the behavior issue continues, you will be asked to remove your child from the class. (Classes are not
mandatory and we will not tolerate rude, disrespectful or unmanageable behavior.)
If there is a persistent problem, your Learning Coach or the Principal will help you implement strategies
to help correct the behavior. Once corrected, your child may attend classes at that time if appropriate.
