The Industry That Continues to Thrive

MANUFACTURING TRENDS

Lightweight aluminum and magnesium alloys will continue to displace steel in new designs

Remaining steel will be engineered, hard-to-cut,

high-strength alloys

Composite material use will grow in powertrain, structural applications

Autos Though many analysts predicted 2018 sales would dip below 17 MILLION UNITS, performance through the first half of the year was better than expected and is on track to stay above that mark. For 2019, early predictions call for as many as 17.3 MILLION UNITS sold with more growth expected for 2020.

COMMERCIAL TRUCKS Class 8 heavy-duty truck orders have topped 40,000 units per month for most of 2018, building

2019’s order backlog to record levels. Massive growth in shipping nationwide has strained vehicle fleets, forcing several managers to order new vehicles to expand capacity or replace overworked, older units.

Crossovers continue to rise. SUV-like vehicles built on car architectures, crossovers blew past sedans in 2017 to become the dominant vehicle choice in the U.S., and the rise of the high-profit-margin

vehicles should continue throughout the next several years, based on automaker product release plans.
