Al Forno(homemade lasagne in layers with beef and tomatosauce), Spaghetti Gamberi Zucchine Vodka (spaghetti withprawns, zucchini and vodka) and Spaghetti Neri PomodoriniCalamari e Gamberi (black spaghetti with tomato, squid and

Yes I know, Im in Thailand, but tonight I fancied Greek.Perhaps it was watching Zorba on TV earlier... Anyway,I wanted Greek and I was walking through Kata when TwoChefs came into view. I checked the menu; it was vast, covering Italian, Mexican, Aussie steaks, Greek, Thai andmore. And the huge beer and cocktail list... Belgian brews...

I chose Tzatziki with Garlic Breadfollowed by Greek Beef

Tenderloin Skewerwith more tzatziki, tasty feta cheese saladand baked potato. My drinking pal chose Toast Skagenwith prawns, dill, chili and mayonnaise. He followed withWooden Planksteak grilled pork tenderloin, a surroundof mashed potatoes, sauce barnaise, bacon and red winesauce served on yes a wooden plank. Everything wassimply superb!

While ordering, we met one of Two Chefs partners,Henrik, who explained the thinking behind the Two ChefsGroup. They have Bar & Grill restaurants in Kata, Kata Centreand Karon, and a new restaurant opening on 1st Dec inIcon Park, just south of Kamala, this one with a Sky Terracefor night owls. They all have similar menus; some have livebands and some single musicians - all Filipino. Not enough?Well then, check out their local bistros in Kata-Karon, one

next to their bakery and birthday cake outlet.Back at Kata Centre, we discovered a discreet 2nd oor

dining area great for couples dining, but would workwell for parties too. Talking of parties, Henrik told us, TwoChefs outside catering is up and running, offering beachsidereworks as one novel feature. These Two Chefs are reallygoing places...

The smiling staff took great care of us as if they reallyloved working here. Fun, enthusiasm and effi ciency werethe keynotes but neither fast delivery nor presentationwere sacriced. And heres a real bonus: they operate an all-day-all-night Happy Hour! The Chang beer is cold and andthe Sangria is... well... exquisitely Spanish.

Two Chefs have a winning formula. Ive got to go back todo their beer selection justice, so Id better arrange a taxi

Dine on Italian food right on the beach! Savour authenticregional dishes while sitting alfresco on the terrace with aview to the ocean or opt for the classic Italian atmosphereof the indoor dining area if fresh sea air is not your scene orthe if weather has decided to be unco-operative.

Tucked away on Surin Beach, Cefal offers not only aspectacular setting to enjoy a seaside meal, but also superb

Italian fare with an extensive wine list to match. Ownerand Chef Duilio and his team have a strong reputationfor preparing delicious dishes using only the freshest andhighest quality ingredients served of course with utmostcare and attention to detail.

Two starters that are a must try are the Crostino alProsciutto di Parma or sliced bread with Parma ham andmozzarella cheese and the Tartare di tonno or fresh tunatartare with toasted bread. The salty taste of the dry-curedpork and the milky taste of the rm cheese ball complementeach other perfectly. Delightful in the way it was presented, the tuna was moist and succulent.

On our visit to Cefals, Duilios main courserecommendations were outstanding. He suggestedLasagne al forno (al rag)or homemade lasagna with meatand Ravioli polpa di granchio e gamberettior ravioli lled withcrab and shrimps served with lobster bisque. The lasagnawas meaty and moist and spiced perfectly just like mamaused to make and the seafood ravioli was heaven for thetaste-buds and a treat for the eyes.

Naturally, an Italian dinner cannot exist without theperfect wine and here Cefals notches up a healthy scorewith its extensive wine list, featuring (of course) a solidselection of Italian wines.

Dessert was a creamy Panna Cottatopped with cherriesand a spongy Tiramisu, traditional Italian desserts andabsolutely delicious.

Cefals offers a casual dining experience with superbfood with an unbeatable beach location. Truly magnico!

Part of Patong Holiday Inn, Terrazzo is a welcoming Italianrestaurant with open seating on the beach road, so easy to nd.Covered seating is also available, should bad weather catchyou out. Since he moved to Patong, Assistant Hotel ManagerMorgan has lifted Terrazzo into a Top 10 position, helped byhis Italian trained chef and restaurant manager Tony.

The restaurant staff are happy, friendly and attentive; the

veranda and beach location attracts beach dwellers, peoplewatchers, passing couples and families. No reservationsnecessary, this is caf style. Around 6-7pm, as the Patongsunset fades, Terrazzo passes over to subtle, ambient lighting, quietly romantic yet ample for menu viewing, keeping thechildren alert and individuals hungry for a Pizza.

As we sipped our Campari Sodas in the Cocktail Bar,we checked out the classic Italian menu (which includes aThai selection served until 6pm). My companion chose tostart with Caesar Salad (with anchovies) and couldnt resistthe Chorizo Risotto main. I decided onAntipastofollowed byPasta Linguine Fruiti di Mare, inspired by the ocean location.

Warm crusty bread with pesto and olive oil dips awaitedus at our table. The slender Parma Ham, Salami MilaneseandGarlic Chorizocame with grilled vegetables and crispy bread

sticks. The blend of avours danced around my taste buds an array of olives and pickles added to the experience whilethe Caesar Saladwas consumed with mmmm sounds andenthusiastic descriptions from my companion.

My delicate herb white wine pasta sauce took nothingfrom the fresh seafood avours. The squid was perfect, thewild prawns full of avour and the scallops! Their soft eshytexture and mildly sweet taste complemented the sauceperfectly. The meal was delectable. My friends risotto wasequally enjoyed and more than lived up to his expectations his plate was empty!

Ahhaa, yes the wine, we chose the lean, crisp ChileanChardonnay and were not disappointed.

Good value, excellent service and a prime beachfront

location all made for a superb, yet relaxed, evening. Ill beback soon. I hear the Chicken Parmigiana is exquisite.

Oysters, foie gras, steak, french fries and mayonnaise, aBelgian blond and... chocolate beer? Superbly presentedand well prepared food, plus exotic beverages, make for anexceptional dining experience. Even more so in a chic yetcasual setting.

The Brasserie Wine Grill and Oyster Bar, one of PhuketCitys newer venues, blends elegant dcor and soft lighting

to create a warm and relaxing ambience. The Brasseriehas four main areas an oyster bar, a dining area of whitetablecloths and framed prints depicting Belgian andFrench scenes, the half circle-shaped bar with its 31 Belgianbeers and other beverages, and an informal space withcomfortable couches, armchairs and low tables to dine andenjoy reading materials.

Alain, the owner/chef of this Belgian brasserie suggestedan array of dishes. Pacic oystersand Warm tomato soup witha vegetable top (served in a shot glass) were a superb way tobegin, while River prawns cooked in a peppery paste and Foiegras with an apple toppingwere pure delight.

Chef Alains excellence and passion for his craft wasfurther displayed in the sh and meat courses. The moistsh, served in foil, was rst grilled and then steamed with

wine and spices, bringing out the ich avours. Pan-fried inbutter, the steak was cooked to medium rare perfection andserved with french fries and homemade mayonnaise.

Decadent desserts captivate the sweet tooth in all of us.The Brasseries Chocolate mousseand Crme carameldid notdissapoint.

Good food must be complemented by good beveragesand must-haves. Leffe draught (Belgian) beer followed by avery drinkable French red house wine tted the bill perfectly. And after? Indulge yourself at the bar and see if you dare totry an exotic beer chocolate, peach, cherry, raspberry...

Outstanding food and drink go hand and hand with aglorious setting and atmosphere. The Brasserie Wine Grilland Oyster Bar is a welcome and very different addition

Chef Steve has created an environment that breathessimple elegance while emphasising wholesome, naturalingredients. According to Steve this means, The best of

Thailands local and organic produce, complemented byimported ingredients from the nest producers of tastearound the globe.

The menu focuses on top quality grilled meats andseafood. In addition to traditional starters and main courses,Kata Rocks offers a wide selection of side dishes to encouragesharing. Mix and match from amongst Steves creations suchas Salmon & vodka crab cake, avocado lime salsa, papaya mintsalad; Roast pumpkin, mustard aioli & pumpkin seeds; Greenbeans, feta cheese & crispy parma ham . Or go for a succulentmain course, for example Roasted Tajima beef tenderloin, olivegremolata, wild mushrooms, pearl onions, pinot glaze.

Before you dine or simply make an evening of it theres the Kata Rocks Bar. They claim its a huge cutabove the 1000s of Phuket bars and theyve got a point!

The same cool design as the restaurant, the same spaciouspoolside location and the same splendid views but abar with a difference. A wide selection of tasty Bar Bites &Canaps, drinks with a unique twist, classic cocktails andcombinations and the really different Enomatic wineserving system; a huge range of premium wines by the glassdispensed by a machine! Simply browse the collection ofwines on display, make your selection, press a button anddrink. The machines preservation system keeps the wine asfresh as the day it was opened for up to four weeks.

The Kata Rocks team describe their creation as ... wherefriends come together to share great food, neither stuffy nortoo casual. It works.

To top it all, Kata Rocks secluded location is away from theincreasing bustle of Kata Beachs main tourist zone and ithas parking! And, of course, the famous west coast sunsets.

    Pasta BastaItalian

    Tel: 08 19792082

Pasta Basta not only brings another dimension to watersidedining at Royal Phuket Marina, but offers something uniqueto Phuket: Design your own pasta dish.

As for the environment, JOBI designers Pui has employedher creative talents creating an industrial feel; a longcommunal dining table occupies the centre of the restaurant, surrounded by high level dining deux tables. The dcor

is simple, creating the kind of unassuming atmosphere youcould expect from a chic Milan city-centre eatery.

Back to that do-it-yourself pasta. If youre like me, thiskind of thing doesnt generally appeal BUT, once we gotstuck into it, theres no denying its a great way to go. Take afew minutes to work out how to do it, check with your hostCathy Masson if youre not sure what goes with what, thendive in and create your own mouthwatering experience.

My choice: penne with (base sauce) olive oil, (ingredients)scallops and mussels and (additional condiments) garlic andwhite truffl e oil. Im a genius! OK, the fact that the ingredientswere top quality and the chef clearly knows a thing or two mayhave contributed to my enjoyment of the best pasta meal Iveeaten for as long as I can remember. My dining companionwent against Cathys advice and selected smoked salmon and

Parma ham two of her favourite tastes as her two mainingredients and said it was divine. Just goes to show: whenyoure in the driving seat you can buck convention happily.

But, if you prefer to stay within the bounds of convention, feel free to go for one of the Classic Creations, where thechef does all the work. But youll be missing out.

Around the edges of our pasta creations, we ordered garlicbread, bruschetta and a fresh salmon salad. The former wereas youd expect, the latter simply heavenly. All was washeddown with a very drinkable Santa Helena Cabernet Sauvignonand followed by desserts from nearby Les Anges bakery.

Pasta Basta is quite simply rst-rate waterside dining withno pretentions just impeccably sourced and preparedingredients and excellent service from a team that neverstops smiling and is obviously happy at work. My companionsquestion, When can we come back? says it all.

    Madame SaigonVietnamese

    Tel: 08 19792082

I have a confession to make. I really know nothing aboutVietnamese food or at least I didnt until sampling MadameSaigons menu on the Royal Phuket Marina boardwalk.

With its fresh and airy dcor, evoking the essence ofcolonial Vietnam, comfortable seating inside or out onthe boardwalk overlooking the fabulous yachts not tomention a cuisine that had yet to make an impact on

Phuket, Madame Saigon is a refreshing change from thePhuket dining-out malaise, same-same-no-difference.

Accepting menus from one of the ever-smilingwaitresses, we stared glassy-eyed and uncomprehendingbefore calling our host, Cathy Masson, over for guidance anda little background on what we were about to experience.

Explaining that Vietnamese food low on oil and highon fresh herbs and vegetables is considered one of thehealthiest in the world, she guided us through a selectionrepresentative of the cuisine. We sampled Chao Tom(mincedprawn and pork on lemongrass skewers), Nem Mua Ha(classic summer rolls crispy raw vegetables, aromatic herbsand cool noodles, all wrapped in a translucent soft ricewrapper), some Nem Rau(crispy spring rolls) to ward off mycompanions pending deep-fried withdrawal symptoms, Ga

Chi Sa(stir-fried lemongrass chicken), Bo Luc Lac(stir-friedshaking beef seasoned with black pepper) and Pho(deliciousrice noodle soup made with either beef or seafood).

What was the verdict? Well, we both had our I like thatone most moments. For me it was the Chao Tomand GaChi Sa. For her, the Nem Mua Haand, yes, the Nem Rau. Weboth raved over the Pho, but realised wed ordered waytoo much (we expected small portions wrong!), so wereunable to truly do its subtle avours justice. Well be backto give that another go maybe accompanied by nothingmore than some Guan Han(Vietnamese barbecued pork).

What makes Madame Saigon a welcome addition toPhuket dining, apart from the superb location, is the varietytheyve added to our standard Phuket choices. And, with themost expensive dish (beef) only about 300 baht (incl tax andservice), going Vietnamese is not going to break the bank.

    SpeakeasyLounge bar

    Tel: 08 1979 2082

It was a brave move to open three restaurants (well, tworestaurants and a unique lounge bar) on the same day butRoyal Phuket Marina did it with their soft opening on the rstday of the Phuket International Boatshow in January 2014.

Long-awaited by mid-island residents, the marinasboardwalk has come alive and promises to be a uniqueplace to drink and dine la St Tropez.

We started our marina evening at Speakeasy a namethat conjures up images of 1920s-30s prohibition in the USA,when the sale, manufacture and transportation of alcoholwas illegal. Speakeasies blossomed and, unlike the traditionalbars of old, welcomed men and womenwho wanted to havea few drinks, listen to live music and dance. Why speakeasy?Well, the original version seems to have come about becausepre-prohibition unlicensed USA bartenders would tell theircustomers to speak easy when ordering their alcohol.

Of course, theres nothing dodgy about PhuketsSpeakeasy at Royal Phuket Marinas boardwalk but it doesconjure up images of an Al Capone hangout and you almostexpect Eliot Ness and his Untouchables to burst throughthe doors at any moment. This atmosphere is thanks tointerior designer Pui (of JOBI designers) who, with a great

eye for detail, has done an amazing job of recreating theauthentic speakeasy environment.

Speakeasy, along with the two boardwalk restaurants, ismanaged by Cathy Masson one of Phukets best knownrestaurateurs whose unique The Wall in Rawai was one ofthe south islands favourite eateries in the late 90s.

What is Speakeasy about? Well, lounge around with friendson one of the luxurious sofas, soaking up the atmosphere witha perfect gin & tonic or a cocktail from the extensive menu. Orsip a malt whisky accompanied by a good cigar outside onthe boardwalk. Speakeasy is perfect for informal meetings andbriengs too, and has an area behind the central island barthat can be curtained off for privacy (but no, there isnt a doorinto a back alley that would be just a bit TOO authentic).

And anywhere that limits its selection of gins toHendricks, Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray has my vote!
