The LEICA M6 TTL follows the principle of classic master-works: concentration on the essential.

Proximity to what’s happening

How are extraordinary, moving pictures

taken? Through the harmonious interac-

tion of the photographer and the came-

ra. And through the close proximity to

what’s happening. When it comes

to spontaneous and inconspicuous reac-

tions, the LEICA M6 TTL is irreplacea-

ble: it enables the photographer to get

in close. Using the LEICA M6 TTL, you

don’t have to worry about the distance

between you and your subject. The

camera remains unnoticed and itself

becomes part of the setting. The perso-

nality of the M photographer is charac-

terised by sensitivity and an intuitive

grasp of how to act discretely and with

restraint. He or she has a good power of

observation and is always in command

of the situation. For such people, the

LEICA M6 TTL – with

wide-opening lenses distinguished by

excellent imaging, as well as the new

TTL flash exposure meter – opens up

great new opportunities for creative

photography in the immediate vicinity

of the subject.

LEICA M6 TTL

For people who focus on creativity.

Since Oskar Bamack developed the ori-

ginal Leica camera in 1914, Leica has

pursued a simple yet great idea. The

idea that it is the creative power of the

photographer that determines the actual

quality of a picture and makes a perfec-

tion composition of shapes, light and

colour. This philosophy is reflected com-

pletely in the LEICA M6 TTL, which is

the epitome of classic, timeless elegan-

ce and a great awareness of style. It uni-

fies high-precision technology and the

optical perfection of the M lens. The

LEICA M6 TTL fascinates because it

offers the experience of original, creati-

ve photography by eschewing some

things which although, perhaps, techni-

cally possible would only place a restric-

tion on creativity. After all, it is the pho-

tographer who should be master of the

medium and not vice versa.

The sensible evolution of a modernclassic: The new LEICA M6 with

TTL flash exposure metering. An innovation that noticeably

expands your creative freedom inflash photography as well.

The very first look through the combined

range- and viewfinder of the LEICA M6

TTL is already impressive because of its

bright, crisp and contrasty image that is

always of the same size. The surround-

ings of your subject are always clearly

visible: a significant advantage for main-

taining an overview of the action, espe-

cially with fast-moving subjects. When a

lens is attached to the camera, a bright-

line frame that corresponds

to the focal length of that lens is auto-

matically activated in the viewfinder.

With the LEICA M6 you have the choice of two viewfinder options: one with theaccustomed 0.72x magnification – and now a new one with an 0.85x viewfindermagnification. If you frequently use lenses with longer focal lengths, you will beespecially pleased with this new version.

The alternative with the larger viewfinder image

The comparison makes it easy to under-

stand: Not only the subject itself, but

also the brightline frames and the range-

finder field that are visible in the viewfin-

der of the LEICA M6 0.85x

are enlarged by nearly 20%. And the

expansion of the effective measuring

base of the rangefinder from 49.9 mm

to 59.1 mm increased the focusing

accuracy even further. An noticeable

ne frames show the area of the subject

covered by the respective lenses. But

the different brightline frames can also

be brought into view manually, without

changing lenses, by means of the frame

selector lever. So that you can quickly

and conveniently determine which lens

will give you the most effective crop-

ping of your subject.

Pinpoint focusing

Experts consider the long-base range-

finder of the LEICA M6 to be a master-

piece. While the focal length and the

aperture of the lens being used deter-

mine the measuring base in a single

lens reflex system, on the LEICA M6 it

always remains unchanged – regardless

of the lens that happens to be attached.

This permits pinpoint-accurate focusing

even with low-contrast subjects that no

other 35 mm camera can provide. With

short focal length lenses, the focusing

accuracy of the LEICA M6 is far greater

than that of a single lens reflex camera.

With the combination split-image and

coincidence rangefinder, you can place

pinpoint sharpness exactly where you

want it. Quickly and effectively. Even

under extremely poor light conditions.

The rangefinder of the LEICA M6 consistsof more than 100 individual parts. It is far

more complex to assemble than the finderof a single lens reflex camera.

The right setting for your subjectThe viewfinder of the LEICA M6 clearlydisplays all the information you need fortotal control of focusing and exposuremetering. Unsurpassed precision givesyou the assurance of immediately beingable to find the correct settings in anysituation. Even under difficult light con-ditions.

Perfect results with selective exposure metering

Selective exposure metering

Back lighting, grazing lateral light, spot

lighting. Outstanding photographs

often involve unusual lighting situations,

and that is precisely when accurate

exposure is of decisive importance. Sel-

ective through-the-lens exposure mete-

ring with the LEICA M6 gives

you the assurance of rendering every

subject in the right light. A silicon photo-

diode positioned behind a collector lens

measures the light reflected by a white

spot on the focal plane shutter curtain.

Thanks to its extraordinarily high sensiti-

vity, the built-in exposure meter of the

LEICA M6 measures the light conditions

of any situation with great accuracy –

even

in extremely poor light. The glow of

a single candle already suffices.

Easy exposure setting

The viewfinder provides you with an

overview of the necessary indicators

for setting the exposure. The exposure

meter is activated by gently depressing

the shutter release button, so that you

can conveniently use the light balance

to set the right combination of shutter

speed and aperture: Two triangular light

emitting diodes indicate the direction in

which you must turn the aperture ring

or the shutter speed dial. A round light

emitting diode in the center lights up to

signal when the correct setting is made.

The new shutter speed dial of the LEICA M6

• Enlarged shutter speed dial: faster and

more convenient setting of shutter speeds.

• New “OFF” switch: prevents the activation

of the exposure meter while the camera is

being transported.

• The shutter speed dial now turns in a direc-

tion that corresponds to the direction indi-

cated by the triangular light emitting diodes

of the exposure meter that are visible in the

viewfinder. When the LED

points to the right, you

turn the shutter

speed to the right,

and vice-versa –

just like you do on

LEICA R cameras.

The light balance serves to establish the correct combinati-on of shutter speed and aperture and it informs you of thestatus of the flash unit by means of light-emitting diodes(LEDs) in the viewfinder.

Plus points for flash photography with the new LEICA M6 TTL

• Accurate focusing in poor light and low contrast situations.

• Reduced danger of camera shake with long synchronized flash exposure times

because of negligible vibration when the shutter is released.

• Balanced lighting mood between the background (available continuous illumination)

and the foreground (lightened with fill-in flash).

• “Frozen subject”: At the instant when the picture is taken, the subject that is illumi-

nated by the flash can be evaluated in the viewfinder: Has the person turned? Were

the eyes closed?

• Was the shutter set for the wrong speed for flash synchronization? The new

LEICA M6 TTL alerts you to incorrect flash synch speeds by means of the flash-ready

display in the viewfinder. As of now, black bars in a flash picture are a thing of the

past.

• Controlled application of flash illumination: The operating concept of the new

LEICA M6 TTL gives you creative latitude with the control of the flash unit.

• Flash techniques for the professional: Most photographers deliberately use longer

synchronized shutter speeds for reportage photography in order to incorporate

ambient lighting into the picture composition.

Plus points of the LEICA M system at a glance

• The LEICA M system stands for reliable performance in all situations, for value retention and

for longevity.

• The combined range- and viewfinder is always bright and brilliant and it clearly shows the surro-

undings of the subject. Even dynamic subjects can quickly be framed in the picture.

• The long-base rangefinder with its constant measuring base permits fast pinpoint focusing

even in low contrast situations.

• Selective through-the-lens exposure metering guarantees accurate results even in poor light con-

ditions.

• The new TTL flash exposure metering feature expands the possibilities of LEICA M photography

and it makes flash photography more accurate and convenient.

• The mechanical shutter release is gentle and quiet, and it is vibration-free: ideal qualities for

inconspicuous photography.

• There is no delay in the release of the shutter, so that “decisive moments” can be captured in

real time.

• The robust precision mechanisms operate extremely reliable, even under the harshest conditions.

• With its handy shape, the LEICA M6 is an ideal companion – for both serious amateur- and pro-

fessional photographers.

• Leica offers a large assortment of high performance lenses for the LEICA M6, with focal lengths

ranging fro 21 to 135 mm and speeds as fast as f/1. Excellent sharpness, extraordinarily high

contrast performance and strictly neutral color rendition are their outstanding characteristics.

• Leica customer service and more than 100 Leica representatives all over the world, as well as

a large network of authorized Leica dealers ensure qualified Leica service most anywhere.

nearly 10 times as fast as that of a

single lens reflex camera – you can

always capture that “decisive moment”

in real time. And since you advance the

film manually, you don’t have to endure

the disturbing buzz of the automatic film

Quality “made by Leica”

With a LEICA M6 you can immediately

sense the exquisite precision with

which it was manufactured. And with

the selection of raw materials, only the

very best will suffice. When you hold

the new LEICA M6 TTL in your hands

for the first time, it will have already

• For instance: longevity tests. Even

after you have exposed several thou-

sand films with your LEICA M6 – the

shutter will operate as accurately and

reliably as it did on the first day.

• In vibration tests, the LEICA M6 has

to prove its extraordinary shock- and

• In climate tests, the LEICA M6 is

exposed to repeated extreme tempe-

• The mechanical shutter release is gentle and quiet, and it is vibration-free: ideal qualities for

inconspicuous photography.

• There is no delay in the release of the shutter, so that “decisive moments” can be captured in

real time.

• The robust precision mechanisms operate extremely reliable, even under the harshest conditions.

• With its handy shape, the LEICA M6 is an ideal companion – for both serious amateur- and pro-

fessional photographers.

• Leica offers a large assortment of high performance lenses for the LEICA M6, with focal lengths

ranging fro 21 to 135 mm and speeds as fast as f/1. Excellent sharpness, extraordinarily high

contrast performance and strictly neutral color rendition are their outstanding characteristics.

• Leica customer service and more than 100 Leica representatives all over the world, as well as

a large network of authorized Leica dealers ensure qualified Leica service most anywhere.

nearly 10 times as fast as that of a

single lens reflex camera – you can

always capture that “decisive moment”

in real time. And since you advance the

film manually, you don’t have to endure

the disturbing buzz of the automatic film

Quality “made by Leica”

With a LEICA M6 you can immediately

sense the exquisite precision with

which it was manufactured. And with

the selection of raw materials, only the

very best will suffice. When you hold

the new LEICA M6 TTL in your hands

for the first time, it will have already

passed its toughest inspections and

tests.

• For instance: longevity tests. Even

after you have exposed several thou-

sand films with your LEICA M6 – the

shutter will operate as accurately and

reliably as it did on the first day.

• In vibration tests, the LEICA M6 has

to prove its extraordinary shock- and

impact resistance.

• In climate tests, the LEICA M6 is

exposed to repeated extreme tempe-

rature fluctuations, after which it must

still function flawlessly.

Technical Data LEICA M System

LEICA M6 TTL / LEICA M6 TTL 0.85Model

35 mm rangefinder camera with a mechanically controlled shutter and selective through-the-lens exposure metering.

Camera type

14 LEICA M lenses with focal lengths ranging from 21 to 135 mm.Lenses

Combined rangefinder and viewfinder with brightline frames. The cropping of the subject iscontrolled through the viewfinder. Viewfinder magnification with the regular LEICA M6 TTL is0.72x, and with the LEICA M6 TTL 0.85 it is 0.85x for all lenses. The viewfinder eyepiece iscalibrated for –0.5 diopters. Screw-in correction lenses are available.

Viewfinder

6 on the regular LEICA M6 TTL; 5 on the LEICA M6 TTL 0.85. They are activated automaticallyin pairs when a lens is attached to the camera: 28 and 90 mm, 35 and 135 mm, 50 and 75 mm(on the LEICA M6 TTL 0.85 there is no 28 mm brightline frame). A preview lever allows theframes to be activated manually, without changing the lens.

Brightline frames

The brightline frame in the viewfinder delineates the subject area covered by the correspon-ding lens. The difference between the fields covered by the brightline frame and the respective lens is corrected automatically.

Parallax compensation

Double-image rangefinder. Effective measuring base is 49.9 mm on the regular M6 TTL, and 59.1 mm on the M6 TTL 0.85.

Long-base rangefinder

Selective exposure metering through the lens at working aperture (TTL metering); it is activatedby gently pressing the release button when the shutter is cocked, and it remains active forabout 10 seconds. It measures the light reflected from a white metering spot on the shuttercurtain. The area of that spot corresponds to approximately 13% of the respective image for-mat. The exposure value is correct when both triangular LEDs light up in the viewfinder.

Exposure meter

Silicon photo diode behind a collector lens. Calibrated to the visual spectrum of the eyes bymeans of a filter.

Metering cell

From 0.03 to 125,000 cd/m2 at f/1. The LEDs in the viewfinder blink when the light intensity isbelow this range.

Metering range

Energy for the exposure meter is supplied by two silver oxide button cells SR 44 or by a lithium battery, size 1/3 N. Batteries last for approximately 8 hours. With a metering time of 10 seconds per picture, this corresponds to about 80 films of 36 exposures each.

Batteries

At ISO 100/21°: exposure values from –2 to +20 EV or 4 seconds (“B” setting) at f/1 to 1/1000 second at f/22.

Working range

By means of a ring near the front of the lens, with click stops at half and full f-stop settings.Aperture setting

From 1 second to 1/1000 second and “B”. Click stops at the marked times, intermediate timesare not possible. Flash synchronization speed is 1/50 second.

Shutter speed setting

Horizontal rubberized cloth focal plane shutter. Exposure times are formed mechanically. Extre-mely quiet.

Shutter

Central contact in the accessory shoe (“hot shoe”) and separate flash connection socket on the upper back of the camera. Flash synchronization time with the “X” setting is 1/50

second. TTL exposure metering: center-weighted integral metering with dedicated flash units (SCA 3000) and adapter SCA 3501.

Flash synchronization

An indication of a correct flash exposure appears in the viewfinder for about 4 seconds afterthe exposure.

Successful flash exposure confirmation

Manual, from ISO 6/9° to ISO 6400/39°.Film speed setting

Manual. Rapid film advance lever with a hinged tip. Partial strokes are possible. Film rewindingis also manual, by means of the fold-out rewinding crank built into the angled knob at the topof the camera.

Film advance

Counts forward from –2 to 40. Automatically resets itself when the baseplate is removed. Rea-dings through a small magnifier built into the top plate.

Exposure counter

Closed camera body made of die-cast aluminum. 0.8 mm thick die-cast zinc top plate. Basepla-te is made of 0.8 mm thick brass. Hinged back cover. Eyelets for carrying strap. Tripod socketA 1/4, DIN 4503. Mechanical connection for LEICA WINDER M. Choice of black or silver chro-me finish. The LEICA M6 TTL 0.85 is available in black chrome finish only.
