". . .if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn
from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land."
2 Chronicles 7:14
Dear Friends,
As we prepare to journey together through this season of Lent, I am reminded that, for some, Lent is seen as
a dark and repressive time of penance and sorrow. Yet even the name itself, “Lent,” which means spring,
calls forth a season that speaks of hope, renewal, new life, and promise. It seems to me that Lent can be
viewed as a spiritual spring cleaning: a time for taking spiritual inventory and then cleaning out those things
which hinder our corporate and personal relationships with God through Jesus Christ and our service to
him. Lent is a great opportunity to dig deeper in all aspects of our faith: prayer, worship, fellowship, mis-
sion, education.
The journey through Lent is about placing ourselves humbly before God, not groveling, but openly, honest-
ly, and earnestly. It is a way to empty ourselves and to remember our need for God’s gracious forgiveness
and love revealed most profoundly in Jesus Christ. Through prayer that gives up self, we seek to open our-
selves up before God, and to hear anew the call "Come unto me!" We seek to recognize and respond afresh
to God’s presence in our lives and in our world. We seek to place our needs, our fears, our failures, our
hopes, our very lives into God’s gracious hands, again.
As we journey together through this season of Lent, I pray that it might put each us in a position to hear
God in ways that we have not heard in a long time. And it may be the beginning of that healing, whatever
that may be for each of us, for which we have so longed.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Kevin
