Dave Engle is well acquainted with the old granary on his property

As a boy growing up on the familyrsquos his-toric farm in Coupeville he remembers help-ing his grandfather unload sacks of wheat barley and oats and storing them inside the structure Itrsquos the same routine he would do with his father

ldquoThere are a lot of memoriesrdquo he saidNow 77 Engle is getting re-acquainted

with the century-old granary

Only this time he and his wife Dolores are moving in

The Engles have been seeking a way to live back on their property since a fire forced them out of their historic home eight years ago

With their land located in the heart of Ebeyrsquos Landing National Historical Reserve on a rare 19th century farm cluster the notion of gaining the necessary approval to build a new home in such a historic setting seemed improbable costly and in the end inefficient

So the Engles entertained a new idea which was a brainstorm of a family friend Jon Roberts

Why not remodel the old granaryRoberts owner of Coupeville-based Cas-

cade Custom Homes amp Design figured an extensive remodel mdash as well as building on a new addition mdash could be the answer the Engles were seeking

He had the knowledge and experience of adding on to historic residences to pursue the plan

But a granaryEven Engles never could have imagined itldquoThatrsquos hilarious isnrsquot itrdquo he said with a

laugh

A group of law enforcement officials led by Oak Harbor police arrested Mala-ga in Bellingham Tuesday

Garcia starting attending school in Coupeville in 2000 after his family moved from Yakima He quickly made friends and excelled at sports

His mother Bettie Sifuentes said her son who was known as ldquoBatordquo by his family members especially loved foot-ball He was No 33 and played running back and middle linebacker

The school will hold a moment of si-lence for Garcia at the start of the home-coming game Friday

Jay Silver former football coach for Coupeville remembered Garcia as a hard worker and positive presence on the team

ldquoHe was always very respectful and many times spoke to me about his baby girlrdquo he said ldquoEven as a senior in high school he was ready and willing to step

THE NAVY HAS ISSUED A REVISED NOTICE OF INTENT TO PREPARE AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT FOR EA-18G GROWLERAIRFIELD OPERATIONS AT NAVAL AIR STATION WHIDBEY ISLANDAND IS RE-SCOPING THE EIS EFFORT CURRENTLY UNDERWAY YOU ARE INVITED TO AN OPEN HOUSE SCOPING MEETING TOSUBMIT COMMENTS ON THE REVISED EIS SCOPE

THE NAVY PUBLISHED A NOTICE OF INTENT (NOI) TO REVISE THE SCOPE OF THE ONGOING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT (EIS) for EA-18G Growler Airfield Operations at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island Washington and to announce public scoping meetings in the Federal Register on October 10 2014 The EIS will now address the environmental impacts associated with the potential addition of up to 36 EA-18G Growler aircraft

Last September the Navy began an EIS to evaluate the potential environmental impacts associated with the addition of two new expeditionary squadrons and additional aircraft to the training squadron Scoping was conducted between September 2013 and January 2014 on that proposed action and open house scoping meetings were held in December 2013 to discuss the proposal

During spring 2014 the Chief of Naval Operations submitted an Unfunded Requirements List as part of the Presidentrsquos Budget for Fiscal Year 2015 that included a request to purchase 22 additional Growler aircraft While it is unclear whether more Growlers will ultimately be procured the Navy is electing to analyze the potential for these aircraft in order to be proactive and transparent Therefore a new scoping process is needed and has been initiated based on the proposed action

THE NAVY IS HOLDING THREE OPEN HOUSE SCOPING MEETINGS to provide members of the public with the opportunity to submit comments on the scope of analysis and content to be addressed in the EIS Each of the scoping meetings will be informal and consist of information stations staffed by Navy representatives Members of the public may arrive at the open house scoping meetings anytime between 4 pm and 8 pm on one of the following dates andlocations

Masses of ghouls and goblins will take to the streets Saturday for the annual Hal-loween Torchlight Parade

Sponsored by the Coupe-ville Historic Waterfront As-sociation the annual parade features a costume contest candy giveaway and more

Participants gather at Cookrsquos Corner Park where judging will take place at 445 pm

Last year the parade had roughly 400 participants and organizers are expecting many more this year

ldquoI think wersquoll see more this year with all the Haunt-ing of Coupeville promo-tion wersquove donerdquo said Vickie Chamber executive director

of the waterfront association The parade starts at 5

pm led by Coupeville resi-dent Peg Tennant and will start at the park go down North Main Street and onto Front Street ending in front of the Island County Histori-cal Museum

Blockades will be put up on South Main Street at Cookrsquos Corner Park at North Main and Front streets Coveland and Grace streets and at Coveland and Alexander streets Chambers said

The parade usually ends around 530 and the block-ades are removed immediate-ly following the parade

Any cars parked on those streets will just have to wait until the parade is done Chambers said

Participants will receive goodie bags and the first 100 children will receive free flashlights for the ldquotorch-lightrdquo aspect of the parade

Merchants along Front Street will be tossing out candy along the route

At the end of the parade Tennant will ask trivia ques-tions for door prizes and announce the winners of the costume contest

Costumes will be judged for best boy and girl cos-tumes best group child cos-tumes best adult costume and best family costume

Winners will receive gift certificates to local busi-nesses

Also at the end of the parade the winners of the carved pumpkin contest and the scarecrow corridor will be announced

Coupeville High School students are building their Homecoming spirit this week

Each day has a different ldquotheme dayrdquo from Twin Day to Wacky Tacky Day

Friday which is an early release day is the annual Homecoming Parade at 2 pm Students will gather in

the high school parking lot and travel down Main Street to Front Street The parade is estimated to last about an hour

The varsity Homecom-ing football game is 530 pm against Klahowya High School

Saturday there is a dance at 9 pm at the high school

After leading four ghost walks through downtown Coupeville over the weekend Rebecca Robinson physically was feeling spent

Spiritually however she could have gone on forever

ldquoI live for Halloweenrdquo she said

The month-long list of events and activities that make up the first Haunting of Coupeville this October was exactly the sort of thing that lured Robinson and her hus-band Don from Fresno Ca-lif two and a half years ago

When Lynda Eccles ex-ecutive director of the Coupe-ville Chamber of Commerce set the idea in motion Robin-son couldnrsquot have jumped on board to help quick enough

ldquoWe wanted a communi-ty-wide eventrdquo Eccles said ldquoBy incorporating some ma-jor players it happenedrdquo

Local businesses and two historic community farm families have stepped in as have other community mem-bers and school groups

All were in play last week Friday and Saturday nights during the Coupeville Ghost Walks led by Robinson

Steering clear of real his-tory and actual family names from Washingtonrsquos second oldest town Robinson told fictional tales as she led groups around the usual wa-terfront attractions

She led the followers on the boardwalk near the wharf criss-crossed Front Street and walked through dark passageways between buildings

Students from Coupeville

and Oak Harbor high schools dressed as zombies pirates a butcher coffin-maker and other characters popped out of the darkness to provide a scare then tended to follow the group for the duration of the tour

The group was led through the Weary Bones Graveyard a creation of Coupeville insurance agent Matt Iverson and others be-fore winding up at a haunted house in the office of massage therapist Susan Rogers Berg on Coveland Street

The biggest scares came from characters dressed as scarecrows who appeared to be stiff dummies until Rob-inson got too close Iverson whorsquos on the Chamber of Commerce board played the role of one of the scarecrows but had his mind somewhere else

ldquoIrsquom supposed to be at the Corn Mazerdquo he said

While the Ghost Walks are done the Haunted Corn Maze is just warming up

ily Farms near Ebey Bowl will be held Friday Saturday and Sunday Oct 24 25 and 26 and Friday Oct 31

I know many are wondering who won the Busted Bulldozer and Home Island Hero awards

The Dozer went to Oak Harbor mayor Scott Dudley and the Oak Har-bor City Council for callously cutting down an Oak Harbor icon the Post Office oak tree

The second award went to ex-Island County Commissioner Angie Homola for her efforts while in office

Though competition was stiff in

both cases the decibel meter went off the scale in favor of the winners

One reason WEANfest was held at the farm was because WEAN was instrumental in its evolution When Chateau Ste Michele Winery decided to sell the farm in 1995 WEAN orga-nized the first meeting Eighty people crammed the Greenbank Progressive Hall to strategize a plan

The rest is history and typical of what we do It is truly a jewel in the na-vel of Whidbey Island and a resource for residents and the region

The results of the Nov 4 general election will have real implications on Central Whidbey

Candidates for a series of local and state races as well as one US Congressional seat met with the editors of Whid-bey Islandrsquos community newspapers to share their platforms and answer some tough questions

Perhaps the most important race for Coupeville is the one to decide who will sit on Island Countyrsquos three-mem-ber board of commissioners With one Democrat and one Republican on the board the result of the election will be a game-changer

Karla Jacks the Democratic candidate will best reflect Central Whidbeyrsquos moderate tone She lives on Camano Is-land but her family owns property on Central Whidbey and shersquos spent a great deal of time here

She understands the issues facing communities like Coupeville Shersquos the director of the Camano Center and is formerly the president of the Camano Island Chamber of Commerce so she knows the challenges facing small busi-nesses

Rick Hannold the Republican candidate brings a con-servative approach reflective of North Whidbeyrsquos Navy pop-ulation But his claim that global warming isnrsquot man-made suggests that he relies on dogma more than scientific facts

In the race for county treasurer itrsquos clearly time for new blood This race has become quite heated with challenger Wanda Grone a Republican criticizing Democratic incum-bent Ana Maria Nuntildeez for being absent and making mul-tiple mistakes which ultimately cost the county money

While Nuntildeez concedes she did take time off all ap-proved and justifiable she said the mistakes that happened in her office happened while she was present This does not make her bid for reelection stronger but weakens it in our opinion

Nuntildeez had four years to get things in order Shersquos had her chance Shersquos even made errors during this past year

Grone may not be the saving grace for the treasurerrsquos of-fice but letrsquos give her four years to put her ideas into action

In the race for Island County auditor incumbent Sheilah Crider is the best fit of the two candidates While several mistakes occurred under her watch as well Crider also ush-ered in positive changes

First and foremost the auditorrsquos office abandoned a long-standing and archaic cash-only policy and now accepts debit cards

We were underwhelmed by Democrat Rebecca Wagnerrsquos stated reasons for seeking the job

In the race for Congress we believe Rick Larsenrsquos years of experience were important to getting the job done in the halls of Congress

While opponent BJ Guillot raised some fine points his lack of experience may be more of a hindrance than this dis-trict can afford

In the race for state representative we felt both incum-bents mdash Dave Hayes and Norma Smith mdash continue to do well in their positions

Hayesrsquo challenger Nick Petrish had many ideas for help-ing the statersquos economy however some of his proposals may be deemed too outside the norm and may render him inef-fective in the legislature

Smithrsquos challenger Michael Scott cancelled his editorial board meeting and did not reschedule

ldquoAnnierdquo as everyone knew her was born in Port Townsend Wash Nov 28 1922 to Bertha and James Chapman Her father tended the Fort Worden lighthouse Her father died when she was 3 and the family moved to Whidbey

Annie her sister Frances and brother ldquoBillyrdquo grew up in Coupeville in the Keystone Crocket Lake

area She milked cows for ldquoOld Lady Lawrencerdquo their neighbor at the age of 10 She was an ardent student and enjoyed school She worked for Jules Cafeacute at age 15 and made pies includ-ing ldquoAnniersquos Apple Pierdquo for which she was well-known

Annie married George W Hesselgrave or ldquoGWrdquo June 26 1947 and the young family moved to Sumas to make their first home In 1948 Coupeville became their permanent home Annie became active in the community and was a very supportive member of the ldquoCivic Clubrdquo which managed the Coupeville Rec Hall and activities for the community

She was a Girl Scout leader and proudly served 22 years on the Coupeville School Board She worked tirelessly to better the Coupeville schools She was also a huge supporter of the Town of Coupeville and always encouraged every-one to shop locally She was a great homemaker but also found the time to serve as assistant clerk for the Town of Coupeville for 18 years

She was a member of Whidbey Allied Artist and painted oils and watercol-ors In later years she did toll painting wooden piec-es for the waterfront and

If you favor certain plants because of their fra-grance yoursquore not alone There are billions and bil-lions of little pollinators in the world who agree with you

As we all know the prime directive in nature is to reproduce and let loose on the world more of your own kind

To this end those plants that are unable to pollinate themselves have evolved strategies to get someone else to do their work for them

By setting out a buffet of tasty and nutritious pollen

or nectar the plant can get bees and other pollinators to return again and again to their flowers

In this way pollen ends up traveling to other flowers or other parts of the same flower and fertilization can take place

First the pollinators must be lured to the plant to carry out this task

To get them there some plants use color but a color that attracts specific pollina-tors for that species

These colors donrsquot even have to be viewable by the human eye

It isnrsquot uncommon to find Day Glo ldquolanding stripsrdquo leading to the stamen or nectar stores on the petals of some plants when viewed under black light

Other plants use scent This is especially important for flowers that are pollinat-ed by moths and other night- flying creatures

To be effective and travel

the farthest distance a scent must be composed of vola-tile compounds The mol-ecules in these compounds must be small and light so that they can waft easily through the air

The same thing that makes lavender essential oil for example so fragrant also makes it evaporate if you forget to reseal the bottle

In the same way that dif-ferent colors attract different pollinators scents have also co-evolved with wildlife to draw specific creatures in

Bees like sweet scents and beetles go for spicy or musky scents

Flies can go for sweet but theyrsquore wild about the smell of putrefying flesh

Thatrsquos why the corpse flower evolved to smell so dreadful and skunk cabbage packs a wallop

That and the fact that Mother Nature Irsquom con-vinced has a sense of hu-mor

Itrsquos not just the flowers that are making use of vola-tile compounds

Fragrance or the chemi-cals that create fragrance in some plantsrsquo foliage can also act as protection against predators because they taste awful or are poi-sonous

Thatrsquos why you donrsquot see deer munching on your lav-enders sages or mints

Unless wersquore bee keepers or just love to create excel-lent habitat for butterflies and other pollinators we humans are usually drawn to scented plants merely be-cause itrsquos pleasurable That in itself is reason enough I think

But therersquos more to it than that

The olfactory bulb is closely associated with the parts of the brain that are concerned with memory and emotions

member something is closely linked to how they were feel-ing at that moment

The Navy says it is re-vising its Environmental Impact Statement on the EA-18G Growlers to include up to 36 additional aircraft based at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station

Public meetings to gather public comment will be held in late October

The additional scop-ing period which is Oct 10 through Nov 24 will push the completion of the draft EIS to spring 2016 with a published decision planned for spring 2017

A draft EIS was original-ly slated to be released next

year with a 2016 decisionThe Navy announced in

July plans to consider larger Growler squadrons includ-ing scenarios that would increase the five-aircraft carrier Electronic Attack Squadrons to seven or eight The EIS is looking at Growl-er operations at both Ault Field at NAS Whidbey and Outlying Field Coupeville

Aside from the ldquono ac-tionrdquo option the four other alternatives would increase the Navyrsquos total number of Growlers by anywhere from 13 to 36

The Navy requested funding for 22 additional Growlers earlier this year That request was placed on

hold pending the results of the EIS

ldquoWhile it is unclear whether more Growlers will ultimately be procured the Navy is electing to analyze the potential for these air-craft in order to be proactive and transparentrdquo accord-ing to a Navy Fleet Forces Command press release

Ted Brown the Navyrsquos Installations and Environ-mental public affairs officer said that the Navy is simply ensuring that the environ-mental impact of the addi-tional Growlers if approved is considered

ldquoNo decisions have been made but that is one of the alternativesrdquo Brown said

ldquoMuch of this depends on how many if any are funded by Congress

ldquoBut it makes sense for us to analyze the impacts of those optionsrdquo

During a recent inter-view with the Whidbey News-Times Congress-man Rick Larsen said that while the Navy will likely be approved for additional Growlers ldquothe number is going to be somewhere be-tween zero and 22rdquo

It was unlikely that all 22 would be approved Larsen said

In addition to the new squadron alternatives the Navy also included a section in the presentation docu-ments on the Navyrsquos require-ment to consider its effect on historic properties under Section 106

OLF Coupeville where many of the Growler pilot touch-and-go training takes

place lies within the borders of Ebeyrsquos Landing National Historic Reserve

A state agency deter-mined earlier this year that more than 1000 cement blocks placed around OLF had no adverse affect but then reversed its decision following public outcry Since that time the Navy has worked closely with the statersquos historic preservation officer to mitigate concerns within the reserve

Kendall Campbell ar-chaeologist and cultural resources program manager for NAS Whidbey Island said that a Section 106 re-quirement has always been part of this EIS under cul-tural considerations of the study

Campbell said however that community concerns about the cement blocks at OLF along with other pub-lic feedback compelled the

Navy to highlight this part of the process for the public

Citizens of Ebeyrsquos Re-serve sued the Navy earlier this year demanding that an EIS be completed

ldquoOne of the things that is the most disturbing things to us is again the absolute disregard of the Navy for the enormity of the impact and their disregard of Ca-mano Port Townsend the San Juansrdquo said the grouprsquos president Michael Monson

Navy revising EIS to include more Growlers

Sundayrsquos Pumpkin Races were ldquowildly successfulrdquo according to event organizer Vickie Chambers

With 14 participants and around 75 people spectating this first-time Coupeville event Chambers said the turnout was great

ldquoIt was just a fun eventrdquo Cham-bers said

ldquoAnyone could participate and it was freerdquo

Because it was the first time Chambers said they werenrsquot sure about how long it would take The event was scheduled to run 2-5 pm but ended by 330 pm partially be-cause there werenrsquot as many racers as they hoped

ldquoOur goal is to add racers every yearrdquo she said

For her the highlight was seeing the pumpkin creations made by the children

There were two children who worked together to create a Yoda-themed pumpkin another who painted the pumpkin entirely aqua with a gold stem and a pumpkin that was decorated to resemble a ti-ger cub brought in by cub scouts

ldquoIt was really creative work that these kids and adults didrdquo Cham-

bers saidThe pumpkins being raced

were required to be made mostly of pumpkin with the axle going through the pumpkin instead of the pumpkin resting on top of it

The winning team was a grand-pa and granddaughter team whose pumpkin was registered as the Baby Quinn

Participant Jerry Helm entered a pumpkin Chambers said was mon-strous which won a special award for design

ldquoIt very much was a family af-fairrdquo said Chambers

The Pumpkin Race was a part of the Haunting of Coupeville a month-long string of events leading up to Halloween put together by the Coupeville Chamber of Com-merce

The next Haunting of Coupe-ville event will be the Haunted Corn Maze 5-8 pm at Engle Family Farms in Coupeville Oct 24-26 and 31

ldquoI think the Haunting of Coupe-ville has been so successfulrdquo Cham-bers said ldquoWe look forward to hav-ing October events year after yearrdquo

The Pumpkin Races will be among those repeated events es-pecially after the success of this yearrsquos

State Rep Norma Smith does not like to be given bad information

When she was told that design flaws on working state ferries were not a issue she was frustrated that the oppo-site was true

ldquoIt was a problem that shouldnrsquot have happened and certainly should not have been defendedrdquo Smith said

For that reason Smith has worked during the last year to fix what she considers a ldquofun-damental disconnectrdquo within the statersquos ferry system

Smith a Republican is seeking a fifth two-year term as a District 10 representative

The district encompasses Island County plus parts of Skagit and Snohomish coun-ties

Smithrsquos Democratic op-ponent Michael Scott did not respond to requests for an interview and didnrsquot attend any of the arearsquos candidate forums

Smith took 78 percent of the vote in the primary to Scottrsquos 20 percent

The first ferry issue arose in 2010 Smith said she heard complaints about the new Coupeville ferry having a list and crews were having to mitigate the problem by sort-ing cars and trucks to place more weight on one side of the boat

More recently the Tokitae out of Mukilteo was found to have ramps too steep for cars

with low undercarriagesBoth issues have since

been addressed but Smith said that the problem has been that leadership within ferries is not listening to the concerns of their employees

ldquoWe should have a culture where the folks on the ground are heardrdquo Smith said

ldquoThat culture in ferries needs to change You donrsquot dismiss the legitimate con-cerns of the staff you have charged with the maritime operations of your vesselsrdquo

Smithrsquos fight with state fer-ries resulted in her working to get ferries leadership en-gineers and staff in the same room to discuss and solve problems

However she said ldquoit shouldnrsquot have been that

hardrdquoThe legislaturersquos most

pressing issue moving for-ward is going to be the han-dling the constitutional man-date to fund public education upheld by the McCleary deci-sion this year

ldquoEveryone is looking to put the maximum number of options on the tablerdquo Smith said

Among those options are looking to minimize tax in-centives to increase revenues but Smith said she wants to retain the incentives that are the most beneficial to busi-nesses

Smith said shersquod also be looking for ways to tighten up operations on a governmen-tal level

ldquoAnything we can do to

help them to be more efficient and improve their perfor-mancerdquo Smith said

This type of regulatory reform can also be a boost for the statersquos economy Smith said

ldquoIf you look at the seven bills Irsquove passed none of them erode oversight what they do is require the agencies to work more effectivelyrdquo Smith said ldquoBy driving efficiency and reform you as the job creator can make a business decisionrdquo

Smith says she was instru-mental in passing key legisla-tion that makes it easier for businesses to interact with government agencies

Now the statersquos focus is switching to energy policy Smith said

Smith said Washingtonrsquos cheap hydro electricity is a competitive advantage and an ldquoabsolute essential economic driverrdquo

If the state can continue to innovate and provide low-cost energy it can attract pro-duction-sector businesses that create growth Smith said

ldquoAdvance manufactur-ing jobs boost the economyrdquo Smith said

ldquoI spend most of my time focused on this areardquo

On the environmental front Smith said she has been a key player in pulling to-gether the $35 million needed to finish pulling more than 5000 ldquolegacy netsrdquo out of shallow Puget Sound and has worked to restore endangered forestland

Washingtonrsquos natural ar-eas such as state parks ldquoare our treasuresrdquo Smith said which is why she initially vot-ed against the 2011 implemen-tation of the Discover Pass

ldquoIt cuts off the access to the poorest among usrdquo Smith said

That said Smith said some improvements have been made which she sup-ported

Smith said when the Dis-cover Pass was implemented legislators did not look at what an economic driver the parks are for the state

ldquoI think the decisions around state parks have been poorly made in that when that discussion was hap-pening they only looked at the cost of state parks they

werenrsquot looking at the revenue generated by state parksrdquo Smith said

On the issue of gun con-trol Smith said she believes in the Second Amendment and that the state should ldquofocus our efforts on those who get them illegally those who break the law with them those who would harm others with themrdquo

From his room in a hos-pice care facility Joe Rantz related his tale mdash a story rife with the turmoil of abandon-ment and the Great Depres-sion and a story glistening with the gold-medal victory of his 1936 Olympic rowing teamrsquos win against aristocrats and the Nazi state

The listener author Dan-iel James Brown was mes-merized

Nearly 80 years after Rantz and his teammates made their defiant and histor-ic row the story of ldquoThe Boys in the Boatrdquo has command-ed the attention of readers across America topping both the LA Times and New York Times bestseller lists and win-ning the American Booksell-ers Association nonfiction book of the year

ldquoI like to write about ordi-nary people doing extraor-dinary thingsrdquo said Brown ldquoThere is just something uplifting about people faced with extreme situations like survival or situations that call for (them) to reach beyondrdquo

Brown author of ldquoThe Boys in the Boatrdquo as well as two other novels ldquoThe Indifferent Stars Aboverdquo and ldquoUnder a Flaming Skyrdquo will be the keynote speaker of the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts 16th an-nual Whidbey Island Writers Conference being held this weekend at various locations in Coupeville

Though Brownrsquos bestsell-ing and most recent novel has earned him numerous

accolades he said his success did not come unprecedented by years of receiving rejection letters ldquolike anybody elserdquo explaining that he will refer to the history of his own writ-ing career as an educational tool for fellow writers during the conference

ldquoIt is not impossible if you stick to it and are constantly trying to improve your craftrdquo said Brown

The conference features presentations by a number of Pacific Northwest writers as well as workshops pitch ses-sions consultations and Chat House sessions

ldquoOur unique Chat House format is informal friendly and welcomingrdquo said Terry Persun conference direc-tor in a recent press release ldquoThere are two instructors for each chat house so attend-ees get a variety of ideas and perspectives which makes for lively illuminating conversa-tion Everything is geared to help attendees feel comfort-able working with profes-sionals who can help them achieve their writing goalsrdquo

ldquoI figured being a writer was something you were anointed with instead of something you learnedrdquo she said

Lund who previously worked as an elementary school librarian and music teacher always told herself and others she simply ldquodidnrsquot have timerdquo to pursue her au-thorial passions It was when she became pregnant at age 40 said Lund that she real-ized she would need to make the time she desired Now a successful childrenrsquos book author of such titles as ldquoDi-nosailorsrdquo and ldquoMonsters on Machinesrdquo Lund also works as a creativity coach assisting others in overcoming their own obstacles

ldquoA lot of people say they donrsquot have the time but after talking with them there is usually an underlying reason like that they donrsquot think they are good enoughrdquo she said ldquoIf I could start a revolution or have a mission it would be to get everybody to claim their creative birthrightrdquo

During the conference Lund will instruct writers in quick ways to create conflict and suspense in stories

ldquoI get so excitedrdquo Lund said of the moment when she helps a writer succeed ldquoYoursquod think it was me in-stead of themrdquo

Freeland residents David Ossman and spouse Judith Walcutt are returning to this

yearrsquos conference to discuss adaptation and appropria-tion Ossman explained that the couple will be discuss-ing appropriation in the sense of ldquousing found work from the New York Times a guidebook a postcard hellip to discover hidden poetry in languagerdquo

Ossman and Walcutt work primarily in radio writ-ing mdash it was during a radio drama workshop that the two met in San Francisco mdash though each has worked in other mediums including po-etry and prose

The Coupeville High School football team crushed host Chimacum 57-14 Friday Oct 17 setting up a winner-to-playoffs loser-out game with Klahowya at 530 pm this Friday on homecoming night at Mickey Clark Field

The volleyball soccer and tennis teams also chipped off a piece of Chimacum this past week

Coupeville (4-3) and Kla-howya (3-4) enter Fridayrsquos showdown with identical 3-2 Olympic League records

Defeating the Eagles will not be easy -- Klahowya rolled the Wolves 49-6 three weeks ago

Coupeville coach Tony Maggio said things will be different this time around

First the game is at ldquoour houserdquo Maggio said ldquoThat two-hour ferry wait was bru-talrdquo

Second itrsquos homecoming The traditional celebration should give the Wolves an

emotional edge according to Maggio

Next the score of the first game is deceiving Maggio said

Three times the Wolves drove inside the Eagle 20 in the first quarter and three times Coupeville failed to score Get those points Mag-gio said and itrsquos a different game Coming away empty was crushing to the Wolvesrsquo psyche

Wiley Hesselgrave ran for 111 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and Jacob Martin added 80 yards on seven rushes

Hesselgraversquos night in-cluded a 32-yard run and a 23-yard reception Martin had a 40-yard run

Chance Kleinfelter ran once for 14 yards and a TD and QB Joel Walstad had one

Hesselgrave topped the defense with 13 tackles (10 solo)

Coupeville led only 7-0 after the first quarter as penalties slowed the Wolvesrsquo attack

may have had a hard exte-rior sometimes but he had a kind generous heart

ldquoHe was definitely not a lsquogangstarsquordquo he said

ldquoHe was a big Teddy bear but he wouldnrsquot show itrdquo agreed his aunt Michelle Armstrong

In fact Garcia hated bullying and stood up for a friend who was targeted at school He also borrowed money from his grandma to give to homeless people

He loved holidays said his family He had pumpkin carving contests with Pelzer Baker said he managed to sneak into her house one December night and put up

a large Christmas tree and decorated it without waking her up

Everyone agreed that Garcia was a good son and very protective though he had a wicked sense of humor at times

ldquoMy son came home ev-ery nightrdquo she said ldquoWhen he left he always said lsquoI love you and Irsquoll be backrdquo

Sifuentes said she was on her way to Seattle Saturday when she learned that Gar-cia hadnrsquot returned as ex-pected After four hours of confusion she got the news no mother wants to hear

Roberts knew the land-scape for building in Island County particularly in how it pertained to historic struc-tures

ldquoWith any project in Ebeyrsquos Landing National Historical Reserve you have to go through the Historic Preservation Commissionrdquo Roberts said ldquoBecause this is the last intact farm cluster in the reserve theyrsquore really super sensitive as to what we can and canrsquot dordquo

The Engles nodded their approval and Roberts worked closely with the commission to make the plan a reality

Roberts is turning what was once a 548-square foot ldquoraw shellrdquo into an 830-square-foot two bed-room energy-efficient home with a view of the prairie

ldquoIrsquom hoping they are go-ing to have an electric bill thatrsquos less than 30 dollars a monthrdquo Roberts said

When completed which

is expected to be early next year the house will be a blend of old and new in such a way that complies with historic standards

The house will still ap-pear as a century-old gra-nary from public view while the addition will look more modern and be more hidden tucked away behind three old pear trees

ldquoThe new building will have similar-looking siding but we are not matching or replicatingrdquo Roberts said ldquoYou canrsquot do thatrdquo

The new addition also had to be subordinate to the old structure he said The new building isnrsquot as tall

Roberts explored the op-tion of fixing the fire-dam-aged family home but esti-mates proved to be too costly

Knowing that a second dwelling unit would be al-lowed on the property as long as it was less than 1000 square feet and wasnrsquot desig-nated the primary residence Roberts then looked at the

building the Engles used to store grain

ldquoWe are repurposing an existing structure so that wersquore saving it from neglectrdquo said Roberts adding that the granary was built in 1907 ldquoWersquore not just Band-Aiding it Wersquore essentially using todayrsquos building science and heating and cooling and insu-lation and air sealing to cre-ate something just like I built it brand newrdquo

The Engles wanted to re-use as much existing material as possible and when practi-cal

Roberts said he was able to save the existing hardwood floors and use original siding his workers took off on one side to weave in and replace the damaged siding on the other

Dave Engle was born in Coupeville and grew up on Ebeyrsquos Prairie until he left Whidbey Island at the age of 22

He and his wife came back to the island in 1992

when they moved into the main house where five gen-erations of Engles have lived dating back to the 1870s

The fire changed things Still they figure the old gra-nary will do just fine

ldquoWe started calling it the little house on the prairierdquo Dave Engle said ldquoItrsquos just the right size for usrdquo
