History of the Eastern European Mission (Continued) By Robert Qualls
By the mid-1980’s, the situation in the Soviet Union had seemingly
become one of permanent stagnation. It had demonstrated tremendous
power in the areas of military hardware and science, as witnessed by
its accomplishments in the arms race and the “Space Race” with the
West, but these brought little benefit, aside from national pride, into
the daily lives of ordinary people. However, this era saw the rise to
power of a new leader, Mikhail Gorbachev. Unlike his predecessors,
he was willing to admit publically that Soviet society was far from
perfect. He especially felt that it needed more openness and
restructuring. However, the new openness served largely to show the
Soviet people how little they had materially compared to their
Western neighbors and how comparatively little freedom they had.
By 1989, even junior Communist Party leaders frequently felt free
enough to question openly senior leaders. Formerly loyal police and
military units showed that they were no longer willing to fire on their
own people just to preserve the failed dream of “Marxism-Leninism”.
By the end of 1989, the Communist regimes throughout Eastern
Europe had been displaced and the Iron Curtain was being dismantled.
By the end of 1991, the Soviet Union no longer existed, its once-proud
red hammer-and-sickle flag relegated to the place Lenin consigned his enemies seven decades earlier, “the dustbin of history.” People were
now able to discuss all ideas freely, even political and religious ones.
Many realized that there was now a huge spiritual void. Almost
overnight, Eastern European Mission had to transform itself from a
small Bible literature printing and publishing operation dependent on
smuggling and other extra-legal means to get its message out to a
clearinghouse trying to meet an overwhelming demand. The true need
was for a large budget, required to publish, mail, and ship tens of
thousands, and even millions of Bibles and Christian books.
One cannot replace something, even Communism, as a basis for
moral behavior, with nothing. This was the beginning of the practice
of putting Bibles in public schools. The Lord’s people were generous,
and the program continues to grow, expanding to other countries and
now even colleges and universities. And now, Europe and EEM are
pressed with a new challenge – millions of Muslim refugees fleeing
the outright collapse of their nations. Thousands of these people have
asked for information about the Bible and about Jesus, and EEM is
there for them, providing literature and thousands of Bibles. Could
much of the “Muslim refugee problem” be solved by the conversion
of millions of Muslims to Christianity? EEM invites us to try and see!
