ProgrammingChair:RobertaEkbergCommitteemembers-SusanneMartin,DonnaleenBowns,JoyDobsonOverthepastyear,ourclubhasprovidedawell-attendedseriesofeducationalmeetingsforourmembersandguests.Ouraverageattendancewas48,withhighestof63andlowestattendanceof22.Inaddition,weprovidedassistancewiththeAGMprogramandsocial.Ourspeakersreceiveaminimumhonorariumof$100persession,afewpresenterschargemoreandsomerequesttravelexpenses.

Ourprogrammingfor2018hasbeenfinalizedandyoucanpickupaprogramcardthiseveningattheAGM.Cardswillalsobeavailableatmeetingsovertheyear.Topicsforour2018season:

TheRMofEdenwoldassistedwiththeEmeraldParkRoadflowerbedbyconstructingaretainingwalltohighlighttheflowerbedbyslantingittowardthestreet.ThesizeofthebedwasincreasedintheprocesstoaccommodateaproperlyscaledCanadianflagflowerbed.ThankyoutoRonEkbergforbuildingandpaintingtheflagframe.ThebiggerbedwasachallengeforwateringinthehighwindsthispastspringandsummerbuttheRMmaintenancecrewwateredregularlytomakethebestofadifficultsituation.Wethankthemfortheirhelpandhavesomerecommendationsforfurtherimprovementstothisbedinthecomingyear.WhiteCity,withourclub’sassistance,purchased8concreteplanterslastfalltoaddtotownplantingsforCanada150.These8containersplus6compositeplantersourClubalreadyhadprovidedagooddisplayofplantersaroundthetown.TheywereplantedwithanarrayofplantsselectedtocelebrateCanada’sbirthdayhoweverthedrysummerresultedinthehardiestofthemall,thepetunias,takingovermostplantersinspiteoffrequentwateringbythetown’smaintenancepeople.TheWhiteCityDrivebedgotanewdesignthisyearwitharedandwhitethemeandblackmulch.Thetownofficebedstruggledintheheatandwindandtheplanwillbetoconvertittoashrubbed.AnewshrubbedwasdesignedandplantedinChurchillParkandwearepleasedwiththeprogressinitsfirstsummer.Abigthankyoutoallwhohelpedplant,weedandcleanourflowerbedsandplantersoverthesummer.Wewelcomeyourcommentsonwhatwecoulddodifferentlyandespeciallyhowwecanschedulevolunteertimetomakeiteasiestforyoutoparticipateinthefun.Andittrulyisfuntogettogetherandcreateaprojecttogether.Plansfornextyeararealreadyunderway.Wewelcomenewmemberstoourcommitteetojoinus,collaborateandlearn.Finally,bigthankstoourhardworkingcommitteeandtotheWhiteCityandEmeraldParkmaintenancedepartmentsfortheirhelpwateringoverthesummer.RespectfullysubmittedforthecommitteebyRobertaEkberg,Chair.CommunicationChair:ChuckBrumwellCommitteeMember:SusanneMartin

PerennialsaleAperennialsalewasnotplannedfor2017.
GardentourChair:JoyDobsonCommitteemember:CarrieHordos
TheGardentourhadagoodthirdyearwith8largeandlovelyyardsondisplay.Advanceticketholdersallreceiveda$5giftcardgoodatanyCo-opgasstationinwesternCanadawhentheyregisteredatthetourboothonJuly8.TheIceHouseoffereddiscountsonmealstotourvisitors,andrefreshmentswereprovidedbyHordosInsurance.Itallmadeforoutstandingvalueandravereviews.Wewereabletoturnover$1863totheclub.
Becauseoftheevent’ssuccessandgrowingreputation,wewillagainbeofferingtheLoveMeAsIAmGardenTouronJuly14,2018.Whilewealreadyhavesomegardenslineduptohost,wearealwayslookingtoincludeoneyoulove.Passonyourrecommendationtothecommitteeandwewilltakeitfromthere.
CarrieHordosandIwouldalsowelcomeoneortwoenthusiasticmemberstoourcommittee.Thetimecommitment–nowthatweareinarhythm–isabout3-4meetingsperyearthateachlastonecupofcoffee.

ThebustouronceagainturnedouttobeahugesuccesswitheveryoneenjoyingtheirvisittotheWeyburnareaandtheextremelyhospitableWeyburnHorticulturalSocietymembers,aswellasourownmemberKimberlyKielwhowelcomedthegrouptoherbeautifulacreagejustoutsideofBalgonie.
The57passengerbuswassoldoutbytheearlypartofMay,andasinpastyearshadawaitinglist,whichthisyearagainfilledspotsvacatedbylastminutecancellations.
Thebusticketpriceremainedat$35perpersonwhichstillincludedlunch,buthadtobeincreasedto$50perpersoninordertocoveroffthecostofthecateredsuppermealheldattheCaptain’sHall,Weyburn.
TwoofWeyburn’slocalattractions,theHeritageVillageandSooLineMuseumprovidedguidedtoursforthegroup,aswelltheHeritageVillagestaffinconjunctionwiththeWeyburnHorticulturalSocietyallowedustohavethelunchonthegroundsofthevillagesite.Eachoftheseattractionschargesadmission,butbecausethecostofthebusrentalwasextremelyreasonablethisyear,wewereabletocoveroffthecostoftheadmissionforthecompletebusgroupfromthebusproceedsforbothvenues.

TheWeyburnsocietyprocuredseveralgardenswithinwalkingdistanceofeachotherfortheafternoonandalongwithallofthebeautifuloldervarietiesofflowersgrowingatHeritageVillage,thegardenerinallofus,washappilysatisfied.
ThefinalnetproceedsthatwereturnedintotheWhiteCityGardenClubwere$299.52.
SpecialProjects/Canada150Chair:JoyDobsonCommitteeMembers:ArleneJanzen,RobertaEkberg,andCatherineMcCullum.
ThespecialprojectsfocusthisyearwasonCanada150celebrations.WestartedwithaseminaronhowtocreateastunningredandwhitecontainerwithSheilaBonneteauonMay13.Wealsodistributedsunflowergrowingkitsto150younggardeners.WehadgreatpresscoveragefromTheStar,andthathelpedencourageastrongcommunityresponsewithvisibleredandwhiteplantersandbedseverywhere.
AhardyredmapletreewasplantedonFamilyFundayJune10,andtheCanada150eventswrappedupwiththeannouncementatourSeptembermeetingofthewinnersofthecontainerandsunflowercontests.(CarrieHordos,VivianKumick,AliTrenker,andJaylaHagen)Wecameinunderbudgetwithtotalexpensesof$551.
