FORWARD Welcome to the White Knights Baldivis Cricket Club’s presentation of the 2011/2012

Yearbook. This publication is set to celebrate the highs and lows of a year in which

the club fielded 6 senior teams in the Peel Cricket Association.

This yearbook provides you with a comprehensive look into player statistics,

milestones and most importantly club achievements. It also contains reports from all

the captains, coaches and the committee on season’s events.

This yearbook took some time to produce and special recognition must go to the Co-

ordinators Ryan Kenny and Leigh McIntosh for their efforts in producing this great

yearbook. Also thank you to Darren Solomon, Rod Graham, Daniel Astell, Mitch

Graham, Robert Hall and Jason Pearce for their contributions to the yearbook.

Finally, I hope you enjoy this book and treat it with the respect it deserves. This

yearbook is a precious memory of the 2011/2012 season and will be looked upon in

years to come as the history of our club grows.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Another great season for the White Knights. We have much to celebrate and

recognize. Firstly, due to the massive growth of the club it was in the best interests of

all to move out from under the church’s wing and incorporate as our own separate

body. Our application was successful and we are now White Knights Baldivis Cricket

Club Inc. This will allow us to apply for more grant monies and access resources

within the local council and community while still having the support of Warnbro

Community Church as a sponsor.

We continue to hold strong numbers across the breadth of the club. With 9 junior

teams and 6 senior teams and more than 60 In2cricket kids we remain one of the

biggest clubs in the region. Due, in part, to the growth of the area and also because we

retain most of our players who in turn invite others in. We are cultivating stronger

relationships with our local schools. This year we began sponsoring the Sports award

for Settlers Primary school. We provided a $50 Rebel Sports voucher which I

presented to the top sports student.

Our on field performance improved as well this season. We have 4 teams in the finals

this season being E Grade, Under 14’s, Under 15’s and Under 17’s. Most of the senior

teams finished just outside the finals. With a little more development on the batting

front we will be in finals contention across all grades.

Our reach into the community also hit new heights. We improved our holiday clinic

program by opening up our junior clinic to the whole league. We also added an extra

junior Master Class clinic for the older boys to develop and refine their skills

alongside Western Warrior players. The quality of both programs was recognized by

the WACA and they have agreed to provide more resources in the future. We also

took the lead role in providing Level 1 coaching accreditation for the Peel region. Our

addition of a refresher opportunity for previously qualified coaches has been noticed

by the WACA and they have added this strategy to their new training programs.

Our club is also blessed by a strong sponsor base. The generous giving by each

sponsor has allowed our club to develop a strong financial position. As such we have

been able to provide some financial support for a few club members by covering their

fees during a time of financial crisis. We have been able to cover the fees for the sons

of each junior coach because they give so much of their time for our kids. We have

developed some effective money management strategies to maximize all funds in our

accounts.

We have been blessed by some great volunteers within our club. without them we

would not be in such a strong position. They give more than just time to our club, they

put their heart and soul into it. No amount of words could convey the appreciation I

have for them. If you see them around, please thank them and encourage them. When

opportunity arises at the first AGM I cannot wait to see who will join this great team.

Bring on the 2013 crusade.

COACH’S REPORT

The 2012 season has been a consolidation year for the Baldivis Knights .The club has

continued to have moderate success on the playing field while the structures around

the club get stronger and stronger through the outstanding leadership of the club

through President Leigh McIntosh and the other committee members..

The club was also very lucky to have the services of Darren Solomon to coach the A

and B teams. His presents and expertise always lifts the intensity and direction at

training. Another special mention needs to be made of Jason Youlden who has done

an exceptional job of net co-ordination and team selections. Jason helped co-ordinate

training 3 nights a week every week and never missed a beat even when 60 players

needed to get a bat as well as junior teams having two nets till 5:30 Thank you again

Jason

The season has had its high points and its low points but I would like to congratulate

all the players who have put their hand up to captain the six sides throughout the year

They have all done a superb job and have been professional in helping in selecting

teams and doing the co-ordinating on game days. Thank You Darren, Jason, Rod,

Mitchell, Dan, Rob, Jason and the many who filled in when the Captains couldn’t

play..

Congratulations on Rob’s E grade team making the finals. All teams have been

competitive in most games and with hard work the results will start to fall our way

more. All teams held their positions from last year or slightly improving them. Overall

the club won 51 games which was 2 more than last year. At this rate of improvement

we should have all teams in the finals by 2025. It is glaringly obvious that as a club

we need to get stronger with our batting. To back this point up the A grade side only

had 3 teams score less runs against them yet they scored the least amount of runs of

all the teams. Not a criticism just a fact. It is also great to see the young players

around the club and to see their improvement as their skills and confidence improves

and it is fantastic to see most of the junior teams playing finals and good luck to the

17’s in the Grand Final. It is important that all players take responsibility at setting

goals to improve their own game and the teams results will then happen

The club is in a real development stage and we can only look forward to getting

stronger each year in all facets of the club. It is important that everyone pulls together

to keep the focus on having a friendly happy environment around the club.

If the club is going to continue to improve we need to continue to have people put

their hand up to help out. We especially need people to put their hand up to help out

on training nights taking drills etc. Thank you to all players throughout the year for

their efforts and a special thank you to the committee who give up their time

voluntary to make Baldivis the club it is.

A GRADE REPORT

Thanks to Leigh McIntosh and the committee members for all the great work they put

in to make our club a very well organised and great place to be around.

On the coaching side of things thank you to Rod Graham for the countless hours he

puts into the White Knights. Jason Youlden’s role as net manager, selection

coordinator and leader around the club is so valuable to the White Knights and we are

lucky to have him.

Performance wise everybody should be pleased with winning 7 games, our most ever

after an improvement last year means we are heading in the right direction. The

season could have been a lot more; we unfortunately played poorly in the three games

leading into Christmas and wasted opportunities.

On the whole our batting improved as a team, with more 50 run partnerships and

getting closer to batting for 50 over’s more regularly. This with our improved

catching and ground fielding coupled with our continued strong bowling line up and

we are on the right track.

Individually Leigh Sibley was our most consistent bat with 446 runs at around 30;

Sibs played some great knocks throughout the year. With the ball Daniel Fremantle

was our best, Freo’s 34 wickets at 12.06 was a very impressive. Daniel was well

supported by Mitch Brown (21 wickets @ 19) whilst Daniel Jones 245 runs for the

year was good. Leigh Mac and Grinder both played good all-rounder roles for the

year providing valuable runs, wickets and leadership.

Our training and everyone’s work ethic has improved however we need to double our

intent as well as recruit some more talent to the club to play finals consistently at all

levels. Congratulations to our E (blue) grade for their finals appearances and

successful year, hopefully the rest of us can experience that in the next few years.

In closing thanks for a great year and I look forward to catching up with everyone

soon

B GRADE REPORT

Throughout 2012 a total of 38 players played for B grade. Well done to everyone of

them for stepping up and playing and always giving 100% and being competitive. A

special mention needs to go to the players who put their hand up to captain when

Jason and myself were not available to play B grade. So thank you Jamie and Dave

you both did great jobs in difficult circumstances.

Again the B grade team was competitive in most games and were in contention for

finals up until the last couple of games. The team won 7 games which is credible

considering the number of players who played.

Congratulations needs to go to the players who performed well in B grade and got the

call up to A grade. Jason Youlden Andrew Smart and Peter Russell all were

permanent fixtures in the A grade side by the end of the year. It is really important for

the club that we have players performing in B grade to put pressure on the players in

A grade team.

The B grade team was in contention for finals until the last few weeks and will only

go from strength to strength over the next few years. We need to start winning a

higher percentage of close games and this will only happen as we get stronger in the

batting and are able to chase down scores.

Notable batting performances throughout the year included Joel Johnson 85 and half

centuries from Des Curruthers Brendan Swinden and Dave Brewer. Next year we

hope to see a few centuries made. All bowlers were consistent throughout the year

with best figures going to Andrew Smart 5 for 17and Matt Jordan 5 for 43. John

Vaughan, Peter Russell and Guy Lewis also bowled some outstanding spells

throughout the year.

Butter fingers Graham took the most catches with 7 taken in the slips.

Again thank you for all the players who contributed to the B grade team and we look

forward to a great season next year.

C GRADE REPORT

Our season got off to a great start winning our first five games. Our bowlers doing an

outstanding job, bowling four teams out for under a hundred runs. We then played

Halls Head and again our bowlers did a marvellous job, bowling them out for 98. We

started a run chase and I was feeling confident that No.6 win was coming up. We

were rolled for 60 and our winning streak finished there with only three more wins out

of the remaining eleven games. With two of those wins being due to forfeits, our

dreams of playing finals were over.

We had a couple of close games during that bad run, especially against South

Mandurah at Koorana, with them winning by five runs. Being 8 for 92, chasing 125 to

win, Ryan Deboni and Marco Swanipole nearly getting us home putting on 27 runs

before Ryan holding out to mid- wicket. Matt Jordan to the crease only needing 6 runs

to win with 4.4 overs to go. Unfortunately Matt got caught in the slips and Marco was

left stranded on 19. Also against Shoalwater we lost by 20 runs with them only

passing our total with one wicket left in hand.

There were several outstanding performances over the season.

Bowling- Mark Haskell 5 for 12 against Old Irwinians

Clint DeBoni 6 for 32 against South Mandurah

Batting- Nathan Willocks 75 against Rockingham Beach

Matt Vinkavich 73 against Old Irwinians

Nathan Lucken 61 against Halls Head

Dave Brewer 57 against Dwellingup

Jake Smith 56 against Safety Bay

We won our last game beating Dwellingup. It hadn’t been a good hunting ground for

us over the last few seasons so it was good to finish with a win. The highlight of the

game was the 77 run partnership between Aaron Lepage and Jake Smith, it was great

to watch. Would also like to mention Vinko’s superb bowling to finish of the tail 4 for

7 of 2.4 overs. I believe it was the first time we have beaten Dwellingup in the clubs

history.

We finished 5th

place, one better than last season, so hopefully will go one better and

break into the top four and make the finals.

I would like to thank all the 39 players who represented C grade. You were a pleasure

to take the field with and Captain. Thank you for your efforts and support over the

season. I would also like to thank Jason Youlden for his support and advice during

this season. Hopefully see you all next Season as we strive to improve as a team and

have more fun together on Saturday afternoons playing the great game of cricket.

D GRADE REPORT

Since this was my first opportunity to undertake any sort of leadership role in any

kind of sport, I knew that this season would come with a real challenge. However, I

thankfully couldn’t have had a better team to help me out. So first of all I would like

to thank all of the guys who played this season, gave it their all and made it an

enjoyable one at that.

The first game, despite the 70 run loss, was all about getting to know one another and

learning how each of us took the game. That first round really set up the rest of the

year as we started to look and act as a team, not only getting along but that game felt

like we had played together many seasons before.

The beginning of the season was quite disappointing, with only 1 win and 2 draws out

of the first 7 games. However, all of these losses were close games and set up the rest

of the season with wins in 8 out of the last 11 games, which meant that we only just

narrowly missed out on the finals. Not commencing to the finals was disappointing

with the whole team so fired up with only a mere month left in the season, especially

as we were trying to make up for the poor outcome of the first few games, but these

things happen.

By far our greatest victory was in round 17, when we played top of the table,

Riverside. We went into bat first, made a total of 125 runs and by the end of the

innings we were all worried. However, bowling performances from Phil Carroll, Ben

Sharp, John Freemantle and Russell Hawkins saw Riverside out for just a total of 38

runs to complete what was an impressive game in the end.

With batting performances throughout the season like Nathan Lucken making a 78

and a 62, Chris Hebbard making a 72, Chris Smith making a 70, Peter Kenyon

making a 61, Cam Rogers making a 59 and Ray Goddard making a 45 run

performance really made the season very entertaining to watch. Especially with Chris

Hebbard at the top of the batting order playing like it was a T20 game.

I would also like to say that our bowling attack was better then any other team in D

grade that season. Such batting performances included Phil Carroll taking 28 wickets

for the season which was just amazing to watch with a 6/14 and a 5/18, Nathan

Lucken taking 17 wickets, Ben Sharp with 12 wickets and John Freemantle with 9

wickets.

Our fielding this season was very impressive also, Peter Kenyon and Nathan Thomas

were the wicketkeepers and they did an impressive job behind the stumps. In addition,

the always talking Aaron Wilesmith was our on field entertainment with his bizarre

catching style and sideways movement. There were many highlights just like these on

the field but I’m sure that no one can or ever will forget Ben Sharp getting hit in the

testicles, not once, but 3 times. Once while batting and twice while trying to catch

some of the most simple catches I’ve ever seen, and everyone let him know about it.

Also, the amount Peter Kenyon complained when given out LBW had us all laughing.

For me this was the best group of people that I’ve ever played with, and I would do it

all again without a doubt. Not only was it entertaining to watch and be apart of the

Page 24: WHITE KNIGHTS BALDIVIS CRICKET CLUBwhiteknightsbaldivis.wa.cricket.com.au/files/918... · put their heart and soul into it. No amount of words could convey the appreciation I have

team during the games, but off the field we are all just as close. Staying back for

another hour after the game and having a good chat, a few beers and debriefing the

match was easily just as good. So a big thankyou again to everyone who either played

or filled in a few games this season, and I hope to see you all again back and

improving next season.

E GRADE BLUE REPORT

The Blue E grade team had a great season. We finished the regular season with 11

wins and 7 losses, which is a vast improvement from just 2 seasons ago when we were

getting beaten on a regular basis. The addition of Carl Slabber, Jon Limb, Kieran

Klasson, Tom Fraser and Chris O’Donnell has given us more depth in batting and

bowling, as well as the luxury of having 12 players regularly. The improvement in

skill level has allowed the players who have been together for three seasons to play in

their first final for the club.

Unfortunately we went down in the semi final, losing to Hillman after scoring 211.

We just couldn’t get the breakthroughs we required and they beat us in the 38th

over.

Every member of the team contributed to the season so I will not single out

individuals. We decided early on in the season that we win as a team and we lose as a

team. No one player won us or lost us a game.

This was my third season as captain of this team and I must say that I am proud to

have played with 11 guys who get along well and enjoy playing cricket together.

I would like to thank everyone who supported us throughout the season, as well as the

people who came down to support us against Hillman in the first semi. Sorry we

couldn’t win in for the club.

There were several outstanding performances over the season.

Bowling- John Limb 6 for 24 v Shoalwater

Steve Snashall 5 for 13 v Rockingham Beach

Steve Snashall 5 for 21 v White Knights Baldivis White

Batting- Cameron Smith 88 v Warnbro Swans, 68 v Safety Bay & 61 v Shoalwater

Haydn Cahir 82 v White Knight Baldivis White

Wicus Slabber 63* v Shoalwater

Carl Slabber 62 v Shoalwater Bay & 59 v Halls Head

Tyrone McCarthy 60 v Shoalwater & 51 v Singleton

I would also like to thank everyone who played for us this season. You can’t play

without 10 other guys and your efforts were appreciated. A special thanks to those

junior players who came down to help us out when we were short.

E GRADE WHITE REPORT

Before I begin my analysis of the season proper, it would be remiss of me if I were

not to say a big thank you to a number of people within the club. It is my belief that if

the quality of people associated with the White Knights Baldivis Cricket Club is any

indication, then we as a club are about to embark upon a period of unparalleled

success over the coming seasons. The building blocks that will allow us realization of

our club goals are already in place, we just need to complement this by working hard

and the success will follow.

Jason Youlden in my opinion epitomizes everything this great club of ours stands for.

To say his selflessness and dedication to the club is phenomenal would probably be

doing the man an injustice. Whether he was juggling selections on a Thursday night

(and trying to please 6 captains at the same time!), to co-ordinating training, or acting

as a sounding board for myself after a tough loss, all this was done with a smile and

with a few laughs thrown in for good measure. Jason’s encouragement and positivity

meant so much to me and my side over the season that a mere thank you hardly seems

enough – Jas you are a champion mate and we as a club are privileged to have

someone of your calibre on board.

Gavin Clothier was my go-to man on numerous occasions throughout the year. If

there were times I would need a registration completed urgently, or questions

regarding player eligibility, Gavin would come through every single time. A big

thankyou goes out to Gavin for all his support and for making my job as captain far

easier than it ordinarily would have been.

To Rod Graham and Leigh McIntosh, your advice and encouragement throughout the

season was invaluable and as I have mentioned previously, is a precursor to the future

success of the White Knights Baldivis Cricket Club. I thank you both for your

support and look forward to working with you in the seasons to come.

Season 2012

The E grade White team got off to a most inauspicious start in the opening game of

the season against Safety Bay. Fielding a very inexperienced line up, and with a

significant number of debutants on board (myself included!), we were dismissed for a

lowly 47 runs. Notwithstanding this, we bowled well as a team, and took a number of

positives out of the game.

Round 6 versus Singleton provided our first on field victory for the year by 40 runs.

Highlights of this game included Chris Hyde’s excellent figures of 5 for 17, and solid

batting performances by Joel Hackwell and John Ritchie with 73 and 52 runs

respectively, which included a brilliant stand of 113 runs for the 2nd

wicket.

Round 9 against Halls Head was notable for 2 reasons – it was stinking hot and was

my first game as captain. The boys were very relieved to roll Halls Head for 60 inside

20 overs, then batted out the 40 overs to prevail by 63 runs. Peter Maddocks was the

main destroyer with 5 for 13, ably supported by Jason Pearce with 3 for 5. Peter

Kenyon was the star with the bat compiling a classy 54 not out.

The round 11 fixture against Warnbro was memorable for the superb innings of Joel

Hackwell who scored 101 not out (the only century this year for the club which is a

fantastic achievement!) and the unbroken 4th

wicket season record 112 run stand with

Jason Pearce (37 not out). This was a turning point in our season as the boys gained a

lot of belief from the performances on the day.

Round 12 saw a continuation of our good form with a hard fought 3 run win over 2nd

placed Safety Bay. Brad Ibbotson and Jason Pearce were handy contributors with the

bat scoring 38 and 28 runs respectively, with Brad rounding off a sensational all round

game taking 4 for 15.

Round 13 against Baldivis Blue saw Baldivis White take the honours by a

comfortable 81 runs. Joel Hackwell top scored with 43 runs, with Jason Pearce

contributing 37 and first gamer Daniel Brown chipping in with an aggressive 33. A

solid bowling effort saw Grant Brain, John Ritchie, Daniel Brown, and Derek

Ashfield take 2 wickets each.

Round 16 against Rockingham Beach saw Baldivis White record an impressive 33 run

victory. Jason Pearce top scored with 37 (his third 37 for the year!) and was ably

supported by John Ritchie with 33 runs. Joel Hackwell was the pick of the bowlers

with 3 for 19, with Jason Pearce contributing 3 for 25.

Round 18 against Shoalwater encapsulated the improvement made by the side over

the season with a complete all round performance being delivered on the day.

Shoalwater were dismissed for 39 runs on the back of a sensational bowling

performance by Brad Ibbotson who took 5 for 8 (all bowled!) Brad further underlined

his ability by top scoring with 60 not out in our innings to seal a memorable 124 run

victory.

All in all the E grade White team performed admirably during the season considering

the number of inexperienced players within the side. I stand by my assertion that our

bowling attack was the equal of any other side within the club (as indicated

statistically) and the boys can be proud of the fact that only 4 half centuries were

scored against us in the entire season. It is a testament to the desire and

competitiveness of the group that no team scored more than 200 runs against us all

year.

Unfortunately batting was our Achilles heel this year and as has been mentioned

previously by Rod Graham is an area that we need to work hard on to become a

successful club. It is somewhat disappointing that this in all likelihood cost us a finals

spot but as a captain I could not fault the endeavour shown by the players throughout

the season.

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to lead E grade White this season and I look

forward to building upon the successes of this year in the seasons to follow.
