WHO COUNTS AS ALL? VISIONS FOR RADICAL DESIGN FOR ALL INCLUSIONS AND ALLIANCES Andrea Botero - Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture (Media Lab) Design for All Day - May 29th – 2015

Page 2: WHO COUNTS AS ALL?

•  I grew up and studied in the periphery of the “majority* word” (Colombia)

•  Ended up designing and doing research in the periphery of the “hyper-developed world” (Finland)

•  Good at designing/doing cardboard boxes but I am quite happy with my career move to digital stuff many years ago.

* Term proposed by Bangladeshi photographer Shahidul Alam

“…We now survive illness and injury and live with disability as never before. Although today’s world is a complex place, it is one of our own making, one in which we therefore have the possibility – and the responsibility – to base our designs on the principle of inclusion...”* •  Taken from Design for All Declaration, Stockholm EIDD 2004 •  http://dfaeurope.eu/what-is-dfa/dfa-documents/the-eidd-stockholm-declaration-2004/

INCLUSION PARTICIPATION

COLLABORATION ?

All kinds of slippery connotations Use “inclusion” to think through other 2 issues I am more familiar with

Are the birds participants? And can they also be collaborators? After all this is all about protecting their habitats? Long history of other interspecies collaborations (dogs, horses, pigeons)

‘everything that we do to maintain, continue and repair “our world” so that we can live in it as well as possible. That world includes our bodies, ourselves, and our environment, all that we seek to interweave in a complex, life sustaining web’ (Tronto, 1993: 103; see also Fisher and Tronto, 1990)

“Design for All aims to enable all people to have equal opportunities to participate in every aspect of society. To achieve this, the built environment, everyday objects, services, culture and information – in short, everything that is designed and made by people to be used by people – must be accessible, convenient for everyone in society to use and responsive to evolving human diversity.” * * From The EIDD Stockholm Declaration (2004)
