What were the “Jim Crow” laws?

• Segregation (separation by races) laws that were enforced in most states from the 1880’s to the 1960.

• Also called “black codes”

Laws included…

• Separate facilities for blacks and whites including:– Schools– Buses– Bathrooms– Water fountains– Entrances to buildings

• Living in different areas based on race• No inter-racial marriage
