Who Was John Day? J ohn Day was a hunter from the back woods of Virginia who was engaged by the “Overland Party” of the Pacific Fur Company as a hunter in 1810. They were to cross the plains in 1811 and arrive is Astoria sometime in 1812. During 1811, he became ill and remained behind at an Indian camp near Weiser, Idaho. The following spring, he and another fellow made their way to the Columbia River, where they were attacked by Indians and left for dead near the mouth of the Mau Hau River, thirty miles east of The Dalles. The people started calling the river “John Day River” because he was attacked there. It is likely that John Day never actually visited the area that now bears his name.
