Historical Summarg: Constructed in 1 883 as the 14th major navigational aid along the South Australian coast. Hie stone buildings · . ..;ere amongst the first in the "Iron Triangle". The building materials \vere shipped to the site. The to\·ler vas raised by 25 feet in 1908-9 as a result of shipping accidents.

Si g nifi ea nee: The lighthouse \v'ould have been ani mportant aid for the grain ships using Port Augusta. As Port Augusta and Whyalla became industrial ports, so the lighthouse ·w·ould have been as equally as valuable as an aid.

Random rubble stonevork cottages \v'ith brick quoins. Hi pped corrugated galvanised iron roofs and brick chimneys. Concave verandahs are built in {asbestos cement). t1ulti- paned, double hung sash vi ndovs and fanlights to doors. Asbestos cement leantos at rear. Cottages surrounded by stone \v'alls incorporating outhouses.

Historical Summary: The exact date is unkno\o/n, but they \v'ould probably have been built about the same time as the lighthouse.

Significance: TheiJ are an integral part of the lighthouse complex, providing accommodation for the lighthouse keepers.

Rendered concrete section facing Gay Street w-ith rendered surrounds. Gable ended corrugated galvanized iron roof to main hall. Modern windows to front elevation with semi-circular fanlight to front entrance. Several brick addition to side elevation. Concrete was made out of cement mixed vith salt vater.

Historical Summarg: When the first little hall of 1905, bullt of timber andiron became too small , a public meeting in April , 1916 was held to consider formation of an Institute Association committee. In 1919 steps were taken to erect a new bulldi ng. lt vas opened 3 November, 1920. First floor of roof removed in 196 7, due to unsafe condition.

Significance: The second hall built for the town's cultural and social venues.

Historica1 Summarg:

The first hotel, the Jetty Hotel closed, as the town's business sector moved towards Patterson and Horwood Streets. The S. A. Brewing Company Ieee ping up with the trend, built the first part of the hotel in 1933. lt was enlarged in 1940.

Historical Summary:

Significance: lt is an early shop for the t'w'entieth century to'w'n 'w'hen it 'w'as easier to use 'w'Ood and corrugated iron. lt has retained much of its integrity 'w'ith its facade of doors and vli ndo'w's.

Corrugated iron cottage with hipped roof and raked verandah with simple timber posts. Double hung sash windows and window hood. Corrugated galvanised iron skillion at rear.

Historical Summarg: lt was erected by B.H.P. to t1ouse employees engaged in the haulage (by tram\vay) of iron ore from Iron Knob to Whyalla. Mr. G. Hill and his family were the last tenants. lt was given to the National Trust ·when threatened with demolition. lt was moved to the National Trust Museum in 1 978.

Significance: Whyalla's oldest cottage and the only remaining example left of homes first built by B.H.P. for its employees.

Historical Summary: Formerly located on the corner of Jamieson Street and McBryde Terrace at the site of the the t"ormer police station. Moved to its new site in 1978.

Significance: An early portable cell used by the police.

Historical Summary: First OW'ned by M. Goode W'ho built the first part of the homestead 191 0 - 1920. lt \vas then taken over by the Nicolson family in 1933. The Nicolsons took out a 288 square mile lease in the area in 1919. The rear part of the homestead built betW'een 191 0 - 1 920. The Nicolsons added stone rooms to the front W'hen the•J took over oW'nershi p. The National Trust took over the building in 1969.

The inscription of the monument reads: 'To the memory of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Cowled, who with their family of thirteen in the year 1847, were the original settlers in this area.· At this landing goods and equipment were unloaded from ketches and ferried onshore. The monument has been erected by the descendants of the family in 1959.

Significance: Tribute to early settlers in the area.

Concrete emplscements with entrances cut out of the bedrock.

Historical Summarg: Defence authorltles decided 1t was essential that steps be taken to defend the town's industry. The early fortifications 'w'ere bum by B.H.P. 'w'orlcmen. The majority of the 'w'Ork 'w'8S done by gunners of the 26th Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery under the supervision of the 65th Deputy Commander Royal Engineers 'w'ho arrived in Whyalla on 14th February 1942.

Significance: The defence of B.H.P. operations in Whyalla was crucial, as R.N. ships 'w'ere being built here by B.H.P. as wen as the iron ore flux being mined in the vicinity.

The tramway is 33.5 miles long from Whyalla to Iron Knob and was not only the first railway track to be built on the Eyre Peninsula, it was company owned. Jetty and tramway construction together 'With related costs, cost B.H.P. £66,888. The jetty was built to be 900 feet long and 'w'8S extended around 1912 to be 2,400 feet long and fitted with conveyor belts.

Significance: A company owned jetty and tramway which were the ff rst major part of the B.H.P. complex to be constructed at Whyalla.

Historical Summary: From 1901 to 19121ron Knob and Whyalla were used soley as a mining area. After extraordinary meeting of B.H.P. shareholders, September, 1912, decision 'w'SS made to further develop existing works in SA Iron Monarch, a new quarry \v'Ss opened. In this time of development, Hummock H111 was proclaimed 1 n 1914 to be a tO'w'n C81led Whyalla and the population increased from 50 in 1 901 to 1,000 by 1 920.

Rendered and corrugated galvanised iron building with gable ended corrugated galvanised iron roof. Multi- paned windows. Several storeys in height.

Histor-ical Summar-g: Expansion of B.H.P. operations began in 1912 when the jetty was extended. In 1923 B.H.P. Co. power house was built. IN 1938 a significant impetus was the construction of the blast furnace followed by the decision for the establishment of a shipbuilding yard, initially to provide ships for the Royal Australian Navy in the form of pat ro 1 b08ts.

Significance: B.H.P. operations in Whyalla created a "one industry town" where its fortunes are totally dependant on the Company's successes or failures.

First reported in July, 1866 that the mine contained a large quantity of plumbago (graphite) . lt 'vias 'v/Orked in the early days of copper mining and 'vias said to contain both bismoth and copper. lt remained un'vlorked for many years until the early 1900s 'vi hen it 'vias purchased by English company - Bismuth and Copper Mining and Patent Smelting Co.

Significance: lt is an early mine, its remains depicting the interest taken in the period bet'vleen 1849- 1870s to find mineral '•..tealth on the Eyre Peninsula.

TOPOGRAPHY: the park consists of a flat plain with Wild Dog Hill rising steeply on its western side. FLORA: western myall; saHbush; sugarwood; native peach tree; bullock bush; black oak; rock ferns; daisy bush and narrow-leafed hop bush are among the types of vegetation that occur \~it hi n the park. FAUNA: the animals that are found include western grey kangaroos; red kangaroos; euros; echidnas and Gould 's wattled bats. There are also at least two species of lizards, Stokes skinks and bearded dragons.
