Clowns are supposedly figures of innocent fun – brightly coloured jesters to entertain our children and slip on banana skins in exaggerated displays of slapstick comedy. But the manic joy, the mask of make up and the excessive familiarity are just a hair’s breadth away from terror. Fullblown phobia of clowns (or coulrophobia) is relatively rare, but still many more instinctively recoil. In recent years, films such as Stephen King’s It have highlighted those fears, but clowns have played uneasily on the public consciousness for far longer. Manic medieval origins

    Clownsaresupposedlyfiguresofinnocentfunbrightlycolouredjesterstoentertainourchildrenandsliponbananaskinsinexaggerateddisplaysofslapstickcomedy.

    Butthemanicjoy,themaskofmakeupandtheexcessivefamiliarityarejustahairsbreadthawayfromterror.

    Butalthoughtheholyfoolwasfunny,therewasalwaysanundercurrentofdisturbingtruthbehindhishumour.

    AndrewStott,anEnglishprofessorwhospecialisesinclowningculture,saysthatfoolsalwayshadatenuousgriponlifeandsociety.Themedievalfoolwascontinuallyremindingusofourmortality,ouranimalnature,ofhowunreasonableandridiculousandpettywecanbe.

    Clownshavealwaysbeenassociatedwithdangerandfear,becausetheypushlogicuptoitsbreakingpoint,headds.Theypushourunderstandingtothelimitsofreasonandtheydothisthroughjokingbutalsothroughridicule.

    Theuncannyexplainsalotofhorrortropes,whereyoulookatsomethinganditsnotquiterightlikeahumanfacethatsdecomposing.Itsrecognisable,butjustenough

    awayfromnormaltoscareyou.

    Infact,clownsintheMiddleAges,iftheydidntmakethekinglaugh,theypaidaprettysteepprice.Alotofthejestersweremutilatedtomakethemsmileallthetime.Theywouldhavethemusclescutthatenabledthemouthtofrown.

    ThefirstancestorofthemodernclownwasBritainsmostpopularentertainerduringtheearly1800s.JoeyGrimaldidevisedthestandardclownsmakeupofstarkwhitefacepaintwithbrightredspotsonhischeeksasawayofexaggeratinghisfacialfeaturesinthenewlyexpandedGeorgianhalls.

    Grimaldiwasoneoftheearliestcelebrities,whichmeantthatthepublicwereawareofhissadpersonallifebehindhisjoyousperformance.Grimaldisfirstwifediedduringchildbirthandhissonwasanalcoholicwhodiedaged30.TheeffortofGrimaldisclowningacrobaticslefthimwithpainfuljointsandrespiratoryproblems.

    TheFrenchversionofGrimaldiwasevenmoredisturbing.JeanGaspardDeburau,whodressedasaclowncalledPierrot,killedaboyin1836byhittinghimwithhiswalkingstick.AlthoughDeburauwasacquittedofthemurder,hewasbelievedtohaveattackedtheboyforyellinginsultsathiminpublic.

    Theystandatthefrontofthestageandthrowsweetstochildren,saysStott.

    TodayclownsareclearlyrecognisedasafigureoffunbychildrenarolethatscementedinpartbyRonaldMcDonald,thefigureheadforMcDonaldsfastfood.

    Butthepastfiftyyearshasseengrowingconcernoverstrangerdangerandasuspicionofthosewhowanttospendtimearoundchildren.

    Wevecometoquestionthesexualmotivationofsomebodydressingasaclown,ofgrownmenwhochoosetodressinafullclowncostume,saysStott.Plus,headds,Theressomethingtragicallyunfunnyaboutthevastmajorityofpeoplewhodoclowning.

    ClownfiguresinhorrorfilmssuchasPennywiseinStephenKingsItandtheJokerinBatmanbuildoffafearofclownsthatalreadyexists.Buttheircreationsarenttwistedversionsofaninnocentchildhoodfigureinfact,theoriginalclownalwayshadadarkside.

    Manyphobiasarebuiltfromthisbraidingtogetherofvariousdifferentideasoftheunknownthatarealsoconnectedtotraumaticexperienceinchildhood,saysStott.Theideaoftherecklessanarchicclownhasmixedinwithourfearofstrangersaroundchildren.
