Why Movement Education?

• The reason why I am using a movement education is because movement education focuses on the physical development of students. It allows children to get involved in active games, it is child centred and it is non competitive. Through the movement education we are working on developing students physical and intellectual skills. Importantly this will provide students with a meaningful learning experience (Celik & Johnson, 2016).

Page 3: Why Movement Education

• Movement education develops students motor skills and increases their cognitive knowledge in regards to movement. Movement education “is about developing a very wide base” in order for students to develop their skills in carrying out different types of movement (Ables & Bridges, 2015, p.5). Therefore, “movement is the content of physical education” (Ables & Bridges as cited in Logsdom & Barrett, 1984, p. 141).

What is Movement Education?

Page 4: Why Movement Education

• A particular framework is used by the movement education to classify movement and motivate students to construct a movement vocabulary to put in the movement content.

• The good thing about the movement education framework is that it can be adapted to all ages

• Another good thing is that students can talk to the teacher and other students regarding their movement. This leads to an excellent learning environment (Abels & Bridges, 2015).

• Kogan (2003) has stated that “according to the physical education framework adopted by the State Board of Education, there are three main goals of physical education, movement skills and knowledge, self-image and personal development and social development” (p.3).

Discussion on movement education strengths as a teaching approach

There are many strengths related to movement education as a teaching approach. It allows children to become:- Flexible- Have balance - Develops social skills - Allows children to have a positive feeling about themselves Through movement education teachers can identify any problems or issues students have with their motor skills and then try and improve on it

Page 7: Why Movement Education

• Another strength of movement education is that children's social skills can be identified. If a student has social difficulties then it can be easily pointed out through the movement lessons and this will help the teacher to try and help to improve students social skills

• Movement education also allows the teacher to identify the different learning styles students have. There are certain characteristics that can be identified such as concentration ability, how much a students remembers and self acceptance of the students are identified etc (Kogan, 2013).
